A gem on many levels

This book is a gem on many levels:

1) On the history and development of spy planes: This has been covered by many previous reviews on this book. So, I won't write more here.

2) On creativity: There are a lot of books on creativity. Many of them are trivial. Most are written by people who themselves have not design or deliver noteworthy innovations that are of national or international significance. This book is different. It is written by a person who has contributed innovations at, and even run Skunk Works, which has delivered innovation after innovation that are internationally significant.

How does a smart scientist or engineer determine if an organization is a place of major technical inventions? This book tells you the characteristics of such organizations. How do you organize and run a place that can deliver breakthrough innovations at bargain prices? This book gives you the principles on how to do it correctly.

3) On cold war and patriotism: This book gives you a glimpse into the cold war, and the hair-triggering tension of nuclear war between U.S. and the ex-Soviet Union. Also, it shows the patriotism among the U.S. government officials, top military echelons, pilots, and civilian scientists and engineers. Even more, it shows how Skunk Works' technologies tipped the power towards the U.S.

4) On biographies: This book is a partial and vivid biography of both Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich. Their personal traits, both strengths and flaws, are clearly described.

5) On Navy's major shortcomings: Kelly's fifteenth principle of rather to starve than to deal with the Navy is nothing short of astonishment. The descriptions of the Navy's sticking to Aegis frigate rather than Skunk Works' SWATH ship, and preferring traditional submarines rather than stealth submarines are so, so astounding. Right now, U.S. has the world's greatest naval power. U.S. naval power could have been much, much greater and the cost to the tax payers could have been much, much lower cost if the Navy had adopted stealth technologies from Skunk Works.

6) On the harmful effects of government interferences, wastes and bureaucratic madness: Reading this book and you can understand why we spend so much in defense and get so little in return.

Overall, this book deserves more than 5 stars. It should be read by CEOs and CTOs (Chief Technology Officer) of every major and high tech corporation looking for ways to leapfrog the competitions. It should be read by every Secretary of Defense and officers in high military echelons looking for military technologies to surpass other nations. It should be read by every bright scientists and engineers looking for a place to work where major innovations can be produced. It should be read by every science and engineering professors on how to educate future generations of science and engineering students that can create and innovate.

Awesome aerospace/military history

Skunk works is the true story behind the coolest, high tech, top secret, aerospace engineering division operated by the Lockheed Martin corporation. Forged by legendary U. Michigan alumnus Kelly Johnson, the Skunk Works has created the coolest planes of recent memory, including the SR-71 Blackbird (currently visible on the flight deck of the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier in NYC), the F117A Stealth Fighter, and the U2 spy plane. The F22 Raptor and the Joint Strike Fighter are also creations of the Skunk Works, but are not covered in this autobiography written by the successor to Kelly Johnson, Ben Rich.
This quick read is well worth your while for a couple of reasons. First, the stories behind the creation of these planes is very interesting. For example, the Skunk Works engineers found the mathematical key to the stealth design buried within an obscure physics journal originally published in Russian. Oddly, the Russians military never capitalized on the principle, despite urgings from the article's Russian author. Furthermore, when the stealth plane was first designed and kept in a secret hanger infested with some bats, the bats couldn't detect the plane with their "sonar-like" sense, and they ended up crashing into it.
The book also makes for excellent military and therefore world history. Accomplishments of the U2 spy plane and the F117-A Stealth Fighter are covered in depth and literally changed the course of world events during the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, the Gulf War, and other skirmishes. Many interesting, behind the scenes (formerly classified?) missions are also revealed in this book. Ben Rich also speculates on the future types of planes currently on the minds of engineers at the Skunk Works, and the implications will change how wars are fought in the future.
For readers who liked this book, NOVA recently published a video on the creation of the Joint Strike Fighter, a contract fought over between the Skunk Works and the Phantom Works of Boeing. These do all fighters are amazing, and this video is definately worth watching for those who enjoyed "Skunk Works."

Engrossing true story

I'm not particularly an avid reader of military history books or contemporary history books in general, but after a coworker described this book, curiosity got the better of me and I bought it. I'm glad I did.
Ben R. Rich joined the legendary 'Skunk Works' as a young engineer, worked on some of the most secretive military projects in recent history, and later ended up taking over management of Skunk Works. As a result, perhaps no one else in the world has as much first hand knowledge of these projects, and no one else is better positioned to chronicle some of America's military crown jewels.
Rich (and Janos) have crafted a unique book that gives Ben Rich story, with interesting first hand accounts from pilots, air force personnel, and highly placed government officials. Rich covers the struggles encountered while building various classified aircraft: the U2, SR-71 BlackBird, the stealth fighter, the stealth boat, among others. He also lightly delves into the darker side of the defense industry: politics, waste, and bureaucracy.
An amazing read, and highly recommended.

Too thorough and it's clumpsy

In short, it's too thorough which makes studying this textbook a tough task. You don't know what's important and what's not. Though the general layout of the text is systemetic and unconfusing (definitely you won't find following the author's path difficult), the problem of this books comes from the author's ambition to include a lot in one book and failure to do so by dividing the content into more chapters/sub-chapters. This problem is particularly apparent in the later parts of the book, where different cycles of financial statements are analysed.
This is the comment I also heard among many of my fellows at the university. They all agree this is not a good textbook afterall.

One of the best book I have ever read in Auditing

The authors did a great job in putting together all the essential elements in a logical order. Some ppl have difficulties in understanding the later part of this book because they don't have hands on experience in auditing. I used this book too when I was doing my undergrad degree in HK, this book was extremely terse to me at that time. But after spending few years in one of the Big 5 I find this book makes perfect sense to me right now. I am currently doing a PhD in accounting in the States, and I decide to buy this book (again) as a reference on my desktop.

About the Author

David Pietramala is head coach of the Johns Hopkins University's men's lacrosse team. A 1990 graduate of Hopkins, he is the only person to win the NCAA Division I lacrosse championship as both a player (1987) and head coach (2005 and 2007). Twice winner of the William C. Schmeisser Award as the nation's top defenseman, the 1989 winner of the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award as the nation's top player, and a three-time first-team All-American, he is regarded as having been one of the finest defensemen of all time. Neil A. Grauer is an award-winning author, freelance journalist, and caricaturist. A third generation graduate of the Johns Hopkins University, he is the author of six books, including Wits & Sages(Johns Hopkins University Press, 1984), a series of profiles and caricatures of leading syndicated columnists, and Remember Laughter: A Life of James Thurber (University of Nebraska Press, 1994).

A wonderful update to Bob Scott's original

Coach Pietramala really brought the original text into the 21st century, and has updated it to reflect the current state of play. His coverage of both individual offense/defense is second to none, and his knowledge and love of the game is readily apparent. He gives a lot of great insights into coaching by highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of his individual players past and present, and explaining how they capitalized on their strengths and compensated for their weakness was extremely helpful for me as a new coach.

If you are serious about increasing your lacrosse IQ and upping your game, either as a coach or player, then you absolutely need to have this book in your hands to read over the summer, and then on your bookshelf to refer back to when needed. The coach has poured his heart into creating it, and we can all benefit from the effort that he has put into the text.

I loved reading about the Hopkins tradition at the end of the book, and wish Coach Pietramala and the Hopkins program continued success.

Everything you need to know about the fastest growing team sport in the country

I have to boys 11 and 13 that love this sport. I grew up with football, baseball and basketball and had no idea what lacrosse was. I happened to meet a pro coach at a tournament and asked him how he learned the game. His answerer was "Bob Scotts Book" - I ordered it on my iphone on the spot. This book has it all.

This book doesn't just describe plays and strategies but goes in to how to better develop an athlete and make him or her a better lacrosse player. Drills, play, and how to play as a team are covered but it also gives ideas on how to become a better coach as well as being a stronger, more intelligent player.

About the Author
Dr Steve Peters is a Consultant Psychiatrist and has worked in the clinical field of psychiatry for over 20 years. He specialises in optimising the functioning of the mind and also holds degrees in mathematics and medicine. Dr Peters is Undergraduate Dean at Sheffield University Medical School and resident psychiatrist with the British Cycling and Sky ProCycling teams. Sir Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, Craig Bellamy, Ronnie O'Sullivan and Victoria Pendleton have spoken publically about how Dr Peters' unique model has helped them improve their performance. The scientific explanation for mind vs heart situations

There are two phrases, among others, that I like to live by. The first is "if you don't like something change it, if you can't change it change your attitude towards it." And the second one is "you can't control how you feel, but you can control how you react to it." These two phrases have Chimp Paradox written all over it, and this book is pretty much the great elaboration of the phrases.

Derive his fact-based theories from neurological researches and decades of experience, Prof Steve Peters analyses the mechanism of the brain between the Frontal (the logical Human), the Limbic (the emotional Chimp) and Parietal (the memory-storing Computer), and how different functions of these 3 can conflict and/or complement each others to produce our thinking process and decision making process.

Surprisingly, for such a complex subject matter this book is really a light reading, which is written in a simple and concise way using easy to digest symbols, diagrams and bullet points. But yet, when I tried to read more on neuobiology as a follow up, I can somehow keep up with the complicated and serious stuff thanks to the understanding from this book.

It is by far the book that I highlighted the most, with every single line seems to be important, and it is so psychologically spot on that it feels like it is tailored on the conflicts between my own Human and Chimp. It also gives me huge understanding on how to differentiate between the Human and the Chimp in people around me (and how to engage to them accordingly), and it even has given me a clear and simple solutions to some of my, my family's, and friends' real problems. 5 stars!

Foundation of life book, a must read for the entire human population

First heard of this book while watching the 2011 Tour de France, as the British cycling team continued to outperform their rivals, partly due to their application of the principles of this book. Each chapter develops parts of the framework of our mind and gives easy to remember insights into how our each part works - for us - and against us - if not managed properly. There are constant flow of "ah-ha" insights for my life, and I am happier, healthier and more productive. I have given out 35 of these books to family, friends and co-workers. This should be taught in schools from pre-K through college, and I'm hoping for a YouTube webinar of the highlights.

The Chimp Paradox gives great insight into the 'chimp' and 'human' living inside each of us. It really helps the reader understand why we sometimes make the choices we do (even though we don't want to!). This knowledge may help the reader to make provision for those times and therefore help you make better choices. If you know how the 'chimp' operates and how you can help the 'human' get control without neglecting the 'chimp', you're bound to be less impulsive and reactive.

This is a great read for anybody in business, but also for those interested in self-development and being more in control of their lives.

Inspired, value-packed "tiny" shelter resource

I received this book as an early birthday present from my daughter, Belle, a few days ago. My head and heart have been pouring over it for two days now and I love it!

I am a THOW (tiny house on wheels) designer/builder/dweller. I own several versions of Deek’s books and all of them evidence his effluvient creative spirit and inventive use of resources. Back in 2012, when I attended his workshop (and slept in the Gypsy Junker, page 142), there were only a few books on the market on tiny houses and/or plans.

This Rennaissance man (father, builder, designer, musician, artist, boy scout leader, community founder) has authored several previous books that are chock full of his amazing drawings and unconventional dream shacks. This publication stands out as a wonderful collection of many micro-shelters around the country that he has filmed and includes some structures we have built in his workshops. Deek’s writing style is charming and his observations succinct. A plethora of tiny shelters are presented with each of their customized storage innovations and construction materials in bold living color.

I highly recommend it as a first book to any tiny house enthusiast for all of its tips on tools, salvaging strategy, construction basics, micro shelter plans and affordable décor ideas. Whether you are planning to construct a backyard tree house, mini-studio, office or a year-round tiny home, this book needs to be in your hands, dog-eared, enjoyed, used, and cherished for years to come.

Those of us who live in tiny houses are very minimal in what stuff we keep. I have only 30 treasured books in my 184 square foot tiny house on wheels; and this is the third one from Deek! He inspired me three years ago to fulfill my Silver Bullet Tiny House challenge, and I passionately believe Deek’s micro shelters book will inspire you too!

I love to learn about others who share my passion for ...

I received my pre-ordered copy of Micro Shelters yesterday. I have barely put it down since! As a Tiny House dweller, I love to learn about others who share my passion for diminutive abodes. This book has it all! The photos are amazing! The back story of each structure is fascinating, and Deek points out his own favorite features of every one. In addition to all this...are sections on tools, the beauty of using salvaged materials, and tips for the tiny budget. As if that was not enough, the final section is comprised of plans for six unique tiny structures...for those inclined to build their own, but needing a place to start. This book will appeal to lovers of "Tiny" at any/all stages of their journey...dreamers, builders, dwellers, as well as lovers of all creative design. Oh, and did I mention, for those not familiar with Deek's work, that the book exudes a humor, in both text and illustration, that had me laughing out loud well after midnight (by lantern light). I am so inspired...I'm heading out to do a little dumpster diving!

Fabulously Inspiring

I have a collection of tiny house books which includes Deek's first book that I so loved because it was filled with such playfulness and imagination. This book with its full color pictures and eclectic sensibilities is so inspiring I could hardly sleep after reading it too close to bedtime. Still there are his comic book drawings of wacky shelter ideas, but the pictures of the actual building feats are so deliciously real that my mind enters another realm.

This latest book distinguishes itself with a broad scope of buildings from simple shacks to ones on trailers to tree houses to push carts. Not only is it a collection of notable like minded shelters across the country, but it includes many of Deek's own wonderful designs. Deek delights the eye with his sense of color and design. He even offers decorating advice. Coupled with his frugal salvage-collecting sensibilities every project embodies an eco ethic and available-materials driven direction that makes every build a unique work of art.

The handful of solution oriented plans at the end push the envelope as to what it is possible to live in in terms of real world utility. In particular the Woodsy Wagon pushcart and the Permatent with its outside kitchen and shower. These plans drawn up by Deek and others conjure up the spirit of the tiny house community in terms of a larger movement. But this is the book that really makes me want to get up and build something for the pure joy of it. Deek shows me in his colorful photos of every detail of these micro shelters and in his layman's terms (and plenty of made up ones too), how easily it can be done.

Informative Text Book

This book explains thoroughly a lot of the concepts (physics, technical, statistics...) that are included. It also gives some simplified examples of algorithms to explain concepts better.

A solid text on image processing from a remote sensing perspective

Almost as good as Gonzaez and Woods on explaining digital image processing, this book has the added advantage of showing the relationship between that field and remote sensing. In other words, it shows you how to use the transforms to accomplish goals in the field of remote sensing. Also, it has some really good exercises at the end of each chapter so you can really prove to yourself that you understand what is going on.

I give this book four stars instead of five because there is no real advantage to buying this new book over the previous second edition, although that book is about ten years old. This edition does discuss the more modern sensors, but the calculations and models have not changed. There is no real additional content. In fact this edition and the previous one are almost identical in length. My advice is save yourself some money and get the second edition for less. If you are using it as a professional reference it should serve you well.

Excellent professional reference and teching guide

I regularly teach university courses on remote sensing and supervise students who use remote sensing as a basis for their papers and theses. I find this text an excellent, clear and rich resource. This is a book for people who not only want to learn and understand what remote sensing is, but to actually do serious studies with this type of data. In contrast with other more widely known textbooks such as Lillesand and Kiefer, Schowengerdt goes deep into important technical issues, without excessive verbose. A good investment for the serious student and professional.
