Basic Machines and how they Work

I picked up the physical copy of the book for my (post-apocalyptic) library and am quite happy with the product. This naval manual looks like it was written in the 1940s. It starts simple with simple machines like levers and wedges and then works up to covering the basics of gasoline engines and power-trains. The writers sprinkled the text with both illustrations and equations in order to make the content as broad-based and accessible as possible.

An unsung gem!

This book makes great casual reading material for the mechanically inclined engineer. It oft reminds that complex machines today are a sum of basic mechanisms, just like an organism is made of simple cells and tissues. Levers, springs, gears, hydraulics, bearings are the workhorses behind internal combustion engines, earth working machines, airplanes, cars, bicycles! For its time and audience, the book does justice by covering just the mechanical aspects. A similar book for electronics would have been nice!

Indispensible, undecipherable?

Among those in my acquaintance who are fond of Celtic art, George Bain's Celtic Art is the one which most buy first. I did. Then I read it and found that some of his instructions (particularly for creating knotwork) seem totally off-the-wall and totally indecipherable. However, for some reason, he seemed to be the only one who has ever come up with a way to recreate impossibly complex knotwork panels, and do more than just plain fretted knotwork. Fear not, Dear Reader! If you follow his instructions, practice the designs as he shows them, you will ultimately discover what he is trying to say. And when you do, the entire world of complex, bewildering and magical knotwork will open up to you.
However, knotwork is not the only type of art that Bain covers in this book. He also analyzes fretwork (mazes), spirals and zoomorphic forms (animal and human forms which can sometimes even be interlaced), as well. These, comprise the entire corpus of form used in the great books of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon art which were created in the 6th through 8th centuries.
Let me also put a good word in for Bain's survey of Hiberno/Anglo-Saxon calligraphy as well, in which he assembles many of the fanciful letter forms for which this form of writing is known.
I do own all of Aidan Meehan's books (and also recommend them), but if you can only afford to buy one book, buy this one. Then, as you can afford others, branch out into Meehan (and even Bain's son, Iain has written a book on knotwork!), and begin purchasing surveys of the Books of Kells and Lindisfarne so that you can study from the true masters.

Beginning to Advanced Celtic Pattern Construction

Not too long ago I got the idea for a series of paintings with a celtic-medieval themed look. This book was one of the two books on celtic designs I bought. The type of patterns shown are very diverse and range from simple borders, to spirals, zoomorphs (animal-designs), calligraphy to examination of designs from Lindisfarne and the Book of Kells. It is also the most extensive of any of the books on this subject that I've seen. The only drawback is that the method for constructing these designs is not easy. As one earlier reviewer stated, the main method is to set up a grid pattern, draw out every line then erase the ones not needed. There are other books with simpler, better step-by-step details for constructing celtic designs. However, no other single book covers such a wide range as this one. It also covers a lot of complex designs and shows how to recreate them that no other celtic pattern books demonstrate. Quite a lot of the history of these designs is covered too. For anyone who can only afford one book on this subject this one will be all they'll ever need.

Good intro to Celtic Art

I can't add much more than the last previewer. But it is a good introduction to Celtic Art and patterns, plus he covers its history and shows you how to even difficult patterns. Drawing Celtic Artwork is not easy, a gifted artist and craftsman Bain makes it look easy but its not. Howeverf if you practice the basic patterns you can get pretty good at it in a reasonable period of time. I have several of Aidan Meehan's books and this one is by far the best for beginners imho. Use Meehans works when you can replicate a good many of the patterns found here.
It is also a fine resource for the more elaborate patterns which are not covered very well in other works. Many of these patterns can be transferred to leather, clay etc, you name it.
Overall if you only get one book on Celtic Art get this one and with a bit of practice your effort will be rewarded.

About the Author
R. Jennifer Cavalieri, BSN, RN, CCRC, CCRP, is the Nurse Coordinator of Clinical Research Projects in Infectious Diseases section at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and she has been a research nurse for more than 25 years. Her experience includes coordinating clinical research trials sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry, federal agencies, and investigator-initiated trials. She has also worked as a dedicated subject recruiter and manager of a clinical trials office.

Mark E. Rupp, MD, is Professor and Chief of Infectious Diseases and Medical Director of the Department of Infection Control and Epidemiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His research experience includes leading numerous infectious disease bench and clinical trials as the Principal Investigator. Dr. Rupp is Past President of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He was the Medical Director for a hospital-based clinical trials office and has served as an advisor for the CDC, FDA, NIH, and VA.

This book is a must to have by anyone involved in clinical trials, specially coordinators. It is simplified and hands on resource. I commend the authors for spending their time and energy not just to make money but provinging readers useful material!

Must-have-if-you-do-clinical-research

As a NIH funded researcher, I used this book to guide me the entire research project. Not like other research manual I read in the past, this book shows step by step approaches in conducting clinical research, practical strategies, rule and regulations, as well as templates you can use without reinvent the wheel. This book saved me a lot of time during program planning period. I developed 1002 page project manual based on this book. Must have!!

This book is a must have for those clinical research coordinators who are just starting research as well as those who have been conducting research for awhile. It is written by someone who is in the trenches every day. Someone who is a natural teacher. The business of clinical trial research is decidedly not simple. Jen and Dr. Rupp are veterans of research and know what it takes to be successful. Jen is naturally organized. She has put together a book for many of us who don't have the time or inclination on how to put all the pieces together. The information is provided in such a way that it makes clinical research look simple, which it is not.

Robotech What if....?

This book is about the uncompleted/cancel TV series Robotech: The Sentinels. To bad Matchbox back out of funding the sentinels series. The sentinels would have World War II in space. It was supposed to answer any questions that the first Robotech series left like,"What happen to Rick and Lisa Hayes"?, "Where is Dana Sterling and the 15th squadron"?, and many more questions. This book has some of the outlines/scripts of how the series would have gone. Also, there is some animation arts and draws of new mecha that would have appear in the new series. If you are a fan of Robotech or anime fan you should check this book out.

Robotech: The Failed Sentinels Series

The primary focus of this third installment of the Robotech Art books is the art and planned storyline of the failed series, Robotech II: the Sentinels. For an "art" book, this one is rich in text. However, if you are a die hard Robotech fan, this is the only reliable source of information concerning the series and its development (or lack thereof). I for one recommend it if you want to round out your Robotech collection.

About the Author

Herschel Knapp, PhD, MSSW has more than 20 years of experience as a health science researcher; he has provided project management for innovative implementations designed to improve the quality of patient care throughout the Veterans Health Administration via multisite, health science implementations. In addition to full-time work at the VA, he teaches masters-level courses at the University of Southern California; he has also taught at the University of California, Los Angeles and California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Knapp has served as the lead statistician on a longitudinal cancer research project and managed the program evaluation metrics for a multisite, non-profit children’s center. His clinical work includes emergency/trauma therapy in hospital settings. The author of numerous articles in peer-reviewed health science journals, he is also the author of Introductory Statistics Using SPSS (SAGE, 2013), Therapeutic Communication: Developing Professional Skills, Second Edition (SAGE, 2014) and Introduction to Social Work Practice: A Practical Workbook (SAGE, 2010). Dr. Knapp is currently involved in developing and implementing innovative telehealth systems, utilizing videoconferencing technology to facilitate optimal healthcare service delivery to remote patients, and to coordinate specialty consultations among healthcare providers including interventions to diagnose and treat people with HIV and hepatitis, with special outreach to the homeless.

Nice introductory text

This text does a good job of being clear, straightforward, and simply getting across the main goals of basic statistical processes using SPSS as its tool of choice. I have found this text very easy to read and particularly useful for someone who struggles to understand statistics. I also appreciate the text's explanation of how to perform basic analyses in SPSS as well as how to interpret the output. It does not provide information to help you run more complex analyses, but is a great text to start with when learning statistics and SPSS.

This book is easy to follow and makes sense of the data steps without getting you lost. Also helpful to look at the back at the odd answers to clearly see how exactly to set up the work according to how the assignment is asking for it. It has helped me understand a bit more about the use of data and is very easy to understand, not like other books that use complex terms or wording.

Received the book very soon, and was nothing but happy with it. It is for my biostats class, which makes me unhappy, but the book was perfect and it's exactly what I needed. Another great buy!
