Excellent new book on leadership!

This is a great resource for any leader, Christian or not, and is both enjoyable to read and full of practical, applicable information.

Quotes:

"Most of us do not initially conceive of Jesus as being a clever or a grand strategist, seeking to overthrow an existing world order and replace it with a new one. We feel more comfortable with a milder, less complicated Jesus; one who went about doing good to those he came across. However, such a picture cannot be substantiated from the Gospel text. Deeply Impacting

This book is a great read for those interested in spiritual leadership. It is written with warmth and sheds a gentle and profoundly new light into some standard understandings of the role and function of leadership. Of significance were the thoughts on the importance of hearing the divine voice for internal validation, not the varying opinions of the masses. Also of importance were thoughts on the length of preparation time for healthy leadership, and the link between submission and obedience and authentic leadership. This book is best read devotionally over time and each chapter almost demands a slow, contemplative and prayerful penetration. I want to give this to all the young leaders I train for ministry. It will have lasting influence!

Organized in bite-sized chapters for enjoyable reading, Lasting Influence is a practical resource for young and old--for anyone who wants to understand first principles of Leadership--from the greatest leader in human history. The author uses Jesus' own words to articulate these first principles, but also uses historical figures--Napoleon, Lincoln, Gandhi--to illustrate how those leaders understood those same principles. This is one of those rare books that combines spiritual depth and insight with practical, business-like applications.

Highly recommend it!

I am what most would describe as an introvert, and as such I have a tendency to think a lot. That being said this book threw my brain into overdrive. Being in own mind is overwhelming and I can't imagine how Marguerite did it so many times in so many different settings.

It was an absolute pleasure reading Claudia Gray' s Firebird trilogy. The worlds she created are fascinating but the most endearing quality of this series are it's characters. I took an instant liking to Marguerite even though I am anything but artistic. She was loyal, fierce, and just a kickass heroine who literally fought against the world to save her loved ones. The adventures she had were really well done and her charisma easily draws in readers.

I would recommend this book for all those that love adventure, family and love. This book is sure to send are your heart racing, whether it's in terror or happiness depends on the Marguerite though.

Please read carefully before giving to children

Please be very sure to read this book carefully before giving it to children. I have an older version of this book, edited by Sr. Mary Theola, that is wrought with modernist theological commentary.

She doesn't just tell the Bible stories, she tells children what to think about the stories (such as they are just stories and didn't literally happen that way). Here is an example of her writing regarding the creation of Adam and Eve:

"Here again we have the inspired writer telling us an interesting story about our first parents. We must keep in mind that the story is being told for a religious purpose and that it is most important that we understand correctly the truths this Biblical writer wants to teach us. In saying that God formed man from the dust of the earth, he does not mean that God actually molded a man's body out of clay. We can be fairly sure that the writer did not actually believe this. Neither did he believe that woman was really made from man's ribs..."

This commentary is the personal opinion of the auther and is pure conjecture. It is not the official teaching of the Catholic Church. Yet how is a child to know that this is just a theologian's personal opinion vs. the official teaching of the Church? After all, it says "Catholic" on it...

Bought this bible for my daughter's First Holy Communion. It arrived quickly and was just as beautiful as it is shown online! There are a lot of pictures in the Bible which is great for kids. Loved it!

Excellent

Excellent analysis of the methodology behind totalitarian regimes, with emphasis on the persecution of Jews. Personally the most redeeming part I found in this book was Timerman's personal methods to cope with the traumatic torture, and, most applicable to myself, an existence without tenderness and love. His words ring loud and true, his advice is sound, sound, sound.

I won't give a synopsis of the book b/c everyone else has already done that for you. What I can say about this book is that it is an impetus. After you read it, you'll most likely be hungry for more information about this brutal time in a seemingly well-developed country. Questions to consider: Why the silence of the press, with the exception of Timerman's newspaper 'La Opinion' and the 'B.A. Herald?' How could someone treated so horribly come out of it okay? Why did this happen after Pinochet's regime and the Nazi regime? This is post WWII, so why? Where was the rest of the world? The book is splendid, the first chapter gut-wrenching and beautiful. You will love it as much as Elie Wiesel's 'Night.'

Excellent analysis of the totalitarian mindset

Jacobo Timerman has written a gripping and terrifying account of his experiences at the mercy of Argentina's Peronist regime of the late 70's. A well respected, professional journalist in Buenos Aires, he was editor of the major newspaper La Opinión until he was kidnapped by the military for publishing articles critical of their terrorist tactics. He details how as a political prisoner, and more signifigantly as a Jew, he was held and tortured by a military carried away by their own delusions and rationalizations of violence - and by their virulent anti-semitism. Timerman displays a penetrating insight into the mindset of his captors and of a society that tried to ignore what was happening. A must read.

Errors in grammar and content

I just read the very first article in this book (page 4, last paragraph). It refers to "mon femme". This word is not masculine. Oops!

Tried again. Second choice was the article on "Francophonie canadienne" (p. 18, paragraph 1) where it refers to "les provinces du Nord qui sont encore appelées les 'provinces maritimes' du Canada". The Maritime provinces are not the northern provinces of Canada (I am Canadian).

I only read two articles and they both had errors. I don't trust this book as a source of French that should be learned or taught.

Great idea for a book, but the editors of "Think French" magazine who created this book need to do a bit more work. These kinds of errors shouldn't get past editors at all, but it's especially bad in a book intended for students who want language samples to copy and learn from.

Good news and Bad news

The good news about this book is that includes over 90 very good written subjects in different aspects of french culture, the bad news is that only 26 of those 90 subjects have a an audio track !! it would have been great to have 90 tracks covering different pronunciation difficulties, i guess the authors ran out of space on their hard drive !!!

At last!

At last, a combination french reader with an audio to follow along. Of all the audio-reader combos I've tried, this is the best. The way this is set up, the reader is forced to think in french since the accompanying word lists are not intrusive. Following the recommendations given in the instructions, I found that my comprehension of spoken french has increased considerably. I wish I had this when I was studying french in school.
