Good Introduction to Position Trading

Let me first state -- this is not a book for day traders! Although there are chapters on both swing and day trading, the authors concentrate on position trading. Hence, they include several chapters on fundamental analysis and focus on slower signalling indicators. Now, that's out of the way...

The book is well-written, with the not-too-serious yet informative style that hallmarks a good "Dummies" book. The organisation is top notch, and the authors re-iterate tactics they have previously covered when doing so provides a good learning example. There is a limited amount of technical analysis, with the primary focus on patterns (breakout and continuation) and simple indicators--moving averages, MACD, relative strength, e.g.

As with most "Dummies" books, you are not by any means an expert on the topic when you finish. However, I believe the reader, having paid close attention, will have a good grasp of the concepts he or she will need to trade, and that this book provides a good introduction and foundation for further research in the field.

I give the book 5 stars for well accomplishing the authors' stated purpose, but caution that, if you are looking for a book on short-term trading, you could be disappointed. That having been said, I think it makes a fine base for further reading into such trading. Your mileage may vary.

Excellent foundation for the beginning trader

Trading for Dummies is an excellent book for anyone interested in starting to trade stocks. This book really kept me wanting to read on and on because every section was filled with plenty of information. The way the chapters are arranged were very good in that you don't have to be going back and forth to understand the whole concept. One thing I noticed was that this book is for someone who wants to be a position trader as opposed to a day trader, which is good because that is what I want to do. For someone who knows absolutely nothing about how the stock market works, this book is an excellent read. Overall I give it the full five stars.

Being an intermediate level trader, I'm always on the lookout for books that get back to basics. This "Trading for Dummies" seemed like an ideal book for refreshing fundamental trading skills.

Likes:
*Although intended for intermediate to more advanced traders, this book is simple enough to understand for most novice traders with its "Dummies" icons: Tips, Important points to remember, Warnings, Trader's secret for more advanced traders, and Stockcharts how to.
*The authors have solid credentials in the financial world. Michael Griffis, MBA, is also the author of "Economic Indicators for Dummies"; Lita Epstein, MBA, also authored "Bookkeeping for Dummies".
*Good reviews of basic trading skills such as fundamental analysis (FA), technical analysis (TA)/charts, developing specific trading strategies based on FA & TA, basics of swing and day trading, derivatives, Forex (Foreign Currency Exchange), etc.
*The chapters that I found most useful were Chapter 22: More Than Ten Huge Trading Mistakes, and Chapter 23: Ten Trading Survival Techniques. I've made my share of trading mistakes that were mentioned. Hindsight is 20/20 but it's certainly good to acknowledge mistakes and move on. These chapters are immensely helpful to avoid repeating prior trading mistakes.

Limitations:
*Lots of information and advice that most intermediate to advanced traders already know from other books, TV, or online trading resources.
*Most trading topics covered only skim the surface. There are plenty of other trading books, TV, and online resources that provide more in depth details and information.
*Over emphasis and reliance on TA and charts is unsafe. Traders should use ALL resources and skills available. Nothing beats actual trading experience.

Overall:
A good trading book for rookie traders to learn about the basics, and for intermediate to advanced traders for brushing up on specific trading skills that they may need to improve or refresh.

B. Sonny Bal, MD, JD, MBA is an arthroplasty surgeon, who was one of the early adopters of anterior total hip arthroplasty. Dr. Bal has an academic appointment at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. In addition to clinical work, he is active in materials science research at the Missouri University of Science & Technology at Rolla, Missouri, and heads a silicon nitride ceramic manufacturer located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Bal is also an attorney and active in medico-legal education and consulting work.
 
Originally from New Jersey, Lee E. Rubin, MD matriculated as an undergraduate Presidential Scholar at Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts and graduated Cum Laude in 2000. He then graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha distinction from the Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts in 2004. Dr. Rubin completed his orthopedic training at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut in 2009, followed by an Adult Reconstruction Fellowship focused on the Direct Anterior Approach with Dr. Kristaps J. Keggi and the Keggi Orthopedic Foundation in Connecticut in 2010.
Dr. Rubin is presently affiliated with University Orthopedics, Inc and is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery on the faculty of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He is actively engaged in numerous clinical research projects through The Miriam Hospital’s Total Joint Center, Providence, Rhode Island, and has published over 50 scientific posters, papers, and book chapters. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS), a Fellow of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) an active member of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS), and is a Faculty Member of the International Congress for Joint Reconstruction (ICJR).

In 2013, Dr. Rubin was selected and awarded as one of the Forty Under 40 in Rhode Island by the Providence Business News. In 2013, he was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the Rhode Island Orthopedic Society (RIOS), and was invited to serve on the Board of the Yale Orthopaedic Association in 2016. He is an editorial board member and reviewer for a number of prestigious orthopedic journals, is actively involved with the Rhode Island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, and was the Chapter’s Medical Honoree at the Providence Walk to Cure Arthritis event in 2015. He lives outside of Providence, Rhode Island with his wife and 2 children.
 
Kristaps J. Keggi, MD, Dr Med (hc) is the Elihu Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Keggi was born in Latvia and arrived in America as a World War II refugee at the age of 15 years. With the exception of 2 years of general surgical training at the “Old” Roosevelt Hospital in New York City and 2 years of military service with the United States Army in Texas and Vietnam (3rd Surgical Hospital, Army, Mobile), Dr. Keggi has been associated with Yale College and Yale University since 1951. First, he attended Yale as an undergraduate and medical student, later trained as a Yale orthopedic resident, and ultimately joined the teaching faculty of the university, a post he holds to the present day.

Dr. Keggi completed his orthopedic training in 1964 and was practicing and teaching orthopedic surgery for more than 5 years when the Charnley Low Friction Arthroplasty was brought to the United States. He was among the first in Connecticut to perform this procedure in its classical transtrochanteric manner. Based on his training with Wayne O. Southwick, MD, who encouraged innovative thinking, he rapidly moved to utilize the less traumatic Direct Anterior Approach. With the help of Terry Light, MD, his resident at the time, he presented the DAA technique for total hip arthroplasty (THA) and published his early results as a Scientific Exhibit at the 1977 Meeting of the AAOS in Las Vegas. Subsequently, in October of 1980, he published the results in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, thereby becoming one of the first American surgeons to publish on the DAA for THA. Continuously since that era, the DAA has been his primary approach for all simple and complex hip arthroplasty procedures.

Over the course of a career spanning over 50 years, Dr. Keggi has improved the lives of thousands of patients, has taught over 150 Yale residents, and has hosted more than 250 international fellows brought to Yale and The Waterbury Hospital from Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Sweden, Germany, and Vietnam. He is the author of numerous publications on total hip surgery, has lectured at multiple meetings and locations, and has visited sites around the world to teach and perform DAA hip replacements.

During his career, Dr. Keggi has received numerous Yale teaching awards, honorary degrees from Universities around the world, and has been honored with the Latvian Order of the Three Stars in 1993, the V Class Order of the Estonian Red Cross in 1999, the Distinguished Service Medal of the Latvian Physicians Association (the second ever awarded) in 2009, and the Silver Medal of Medical Dignity and Service to Russian Medicine in 2012. He was granted honorary memberships in both the Latvian Academy of Science in 1990 and the Russian Academy of Science in 1993. One of his greatest honors was to have received the George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award from his alma mater, Yale University, in 2005.

Hit or miss -- a real mixed bag ...

I've used the Lonely Planet guides for years, and they're usually quite good. And I LOVE taking road trips, so anything that helps with planning is a good thing.

This new release from LP is quite good in certain areas, and not so good in others. It's clear there were multiple authors with very different approaches/insights. Some chapters are filled with towns and attractions that are "off the beaten path," or less obvious; others contain the same old tired tourist traps, with no real new and exciting places to go and things to see.

I decided to check out the treatment of places I'm most familiar with: Pacific NW (specifically WA state), California (specifically northern CA), and the Great Plains. I grew up in the midwest, live in CA for 28 yrs, and now call the Pacific NW home.

The good stuff: the Pacific NW section is good, as far as it goes. It doesn't include a lot of "trips," but the included trips are detailed enough, and include enough esoteric info to make them standouts. The Cascade Drive and the Olympic Peninsula Loop are filled with enough detail to keep one occupied for 4 or 5 days (and I've done both of these trips).

The Great Plains trips are likewise detailed enough to spark interest. Again, there aren't very many trips, and nothing, really, in Iowa (where I can personally recommend a day or two in the Amana Colonies), but the ones that are presented are quite good.

The California section was a definite let-down. On the Pacific Coast Highways trip, for example, virtually every "highlight" is a well-known tourist mecca (Golden Gate Park? Hearst Castle? Monterey Bay Aquarium? really? Nothing new here ...). Even the more detailed San Francisco, Marin and Napa Loop contains very little that you couldn't find on the AAA website. I really wanted to see more "discoveries," not the same old stuff that's been written about in popular travel guides.

For the serious road tripper, I would invest instead in more localized guides at the regional, state, or city level. I can definitely vouch for the Lonely Planet guides Lonely Planet Washington, Oregon & the Pacific Northwest (Travel Guide), Lonely Planet Yosemite, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks (Travel Guide), and Lonely Planet British Columbia & the Canadian Rockies (Travel Guide), as I've used all three of these to plan trips. FIgure out where you want to go, and get the local or regional Lonely Planet guide for that area, and I think you'll be happier.

This book works as an overview; not as a detailed trip planner.

You get NONE of that. You can't even bring up the settings toolbar along the top to navigate through, make notes, comments, bookmarks, etc. It's also only in landscape mode. It will not toggle between landscape/portrait as you move your device. I have sent an email to Amazon and will be returning and requesting a refund. Per the other review at the time of my purchase, I don't think it's just me having issues.

I have purchased a previous Lonely Planet Guide for my Kindle and loved the ease it provided with traveling versus having a physical book to thumb through. I travel all the time and have begun to enjoy the Kindle for this purpose. However, this book is not made to be electronic. I think if you really want it, looks potentially great in hard copy, so I would consider that over the e-version.

More breadth than depth for road trip planning, a starting point, you will need additional research.

Summer is the time for road trips so I got this book to plan a few down West Coast. This book divides up the country into a few sections like - New York and the Mid Atlantic, New England, Florida and South, Great Lakes, Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, The Southwest, California and Pacific Northwest. I am pretty familiar with some regions since I've already gone on some road trips and found although this book covers the breadth of USA it does not have much depth. I studied some of the itineraries of Pacific Northwest, California and Florida and found that it ignored some great spots to suggest some lesser known vacation spots that are not as scenic or interesting.

If the idea is to see the best a state or region has to offer than simply stopping at many cities on the way, you will have to pick and choose from the suggested stops along each trip. For instance the Cascade Drive in Washington state is suggested as a 4-5 day road trip. If one was visiting from out of state I would suggest that they spend maybe 1-2 days on a scenic spot from the Cascade Drive but also visit the beautiful wild coast, the rain forests, and the San Juan Islands, pretty easily accomplished in 5 days. Similarly the Olympic Peninsula loop drive ignores Seattle completely and starts in Olympia - the capital city, but why make the extra drive if you're interested in nature? Most people flying in would prefer starting from Seattle going to some of the points like Ruby Beach, the Hoh Rain Forest, Port Angeles and back and maybe use the remaining time (2 days) to see Seattle sights or drive out to Cascades.
Similarly the highway 1 trip down Florida coast could be much shorter and one need not stop at all the cities - instead spend more time in the ones that offer more to see or even make a side trip to Disney or Universal in Orlando. This book is therefore a good starting point that lays out the maps, gives you best seasons to visit and some suggestions about what to do in each city. It needs to be supplemented with a lot of research from TripAdivsor and other sites and more guidebooks devoted specifically to the region for a full itinerary.

I'm doing my Certificate IV in Companion Animals with Delta and this book aligned with everything I am learning and was of terrific assistance. It was so helpful in my studies and such an easy to follow, 5 star read. Recommended to anyone about to endeavour dog ownership or already owning a dog. A must have :-). If only everybody who owned a dog, followed what this book has to offer. Magic.
