About the Author
John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras.

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in a Nonlethal way of defending oneself. The author covers a pretty wide field of objects for self defense for a book of this size and list where they can obtained. Legal issues being brought against the victims in some cases the list that the author covers takes this into consideration when offering suggestions which is very important.

A must read for EX-Witnesses

Wow, after reading "Crises Of Conscience" I felt like I was hit in the head. I felt utterly confused. I didn't know what to think about anything I thought I knew so well. This book will help you get your balance. This book helped me to know where the Watchtower really twists scriptures to meet their own ideas and in actuality what the bible does and does not say on certain topics like: door to door, faithful & discreet slave, blood issue, disfellowshipping, good news, people for his name, salvation by works, congregation. It's like the organization just invented stuff as they went along. Nothing means what they (Watchtower) says it does. This book gave me some grounding. After leaving, I needed to read this book. After reading I felt at peace and felt hope again. Now, I believe in the grace of God and finding my own way instead of turning over the responsibility to an organization to tell me what to think or what to do and how to worship and render service to God. I didn't realize how under Law we still were as Witnesses and how the organization is much like the Pharisees. This is a sad situation, how can so many be so deceived? This is a must read for ex-witnesses, never look back, and rethink everything

I've been in the truth 30 years, elder 25yrs, what he says is all true and well documented, jws do take a person from spiritual illiteracy to basic bible knowledge, then to indoctrination and slavery.

Stunning. The weight of a lifetime of oppression has lifted.

I had to go to meetings/door to door/etc... with my father ever since I was a child. As I grew older, I hated the organization, but felt guilty and fearful all the time. I always felt like I must be a bad, wicked person who didn't love God because I didn't go to meetings, didn't enjoy the door to door work, etc... I would celebrate my child's birthday and then feel extreme guilt. I got to the point where I almost stopped feeling anything, I think to protect myself from the self hatred.

A couple of years ago I somehow stumbled across this book on Amazon, and forced myself to order it. I was nervous for days, waiting for it to arrive (I had a feeling this was going to be a huge experience). When it came, I locked myself in the bedroom and read for several hours. It was shocking - all the little doubts you always have, but repress, were addressed and laid bare, along with many others. When it is all put together in a few hundred pages, it is an incredibly damning compilation of information. I only read about half the book - and that was much more than I needed to see to come to my realization. I sat there for a while, my mouth open in disbelief that this organization could be so twisted, while realizing the truth of it all was there the whole time but I was too brainwashed to see it. After I was able to close my jaw, I realized I felt free - truly FREE!! It felt like the shackles had literally fallen off.

I was actually overcome with joy for weeks. I mean, I felt like I was floating, probably because I didn't have to leave anyone behind at the church (my father still speaks to me and I moved away from there years ago anyway). I now had confirmation that I wasn't a horrible person for wanting an advanced education or for loving someone outside the faith. God didn't hate me because I didn't enjoy harassing people in their homes. Woo hoo!!

I now feel much closer to God (now that I feel I am permitted to have my own personal relationship with God and not just through the WTS), and I am ETERNALLY grateful to Mr. Franz. I just now have to unlearn so much so that I can open my mind to consider other possibilities (much harder than you think - some of these beliefs are set in so deeply, probably because I started going as a small child).

I hope that others will find the relief that I did with this book. I think my relief was instant because I was somehow ready for it, but I hope that it will at least be the catalyst for others who dare. Good luck.
