Gem of the Ocean is the play that begins it all. Set in 1904 Pittsburgh, it is chronologically the first work in August Wilson’s decade-by-decade cycle dramatizing the African American experience during the 20th century—an unprecedented series that includes the Pulitzer Prize–winning plays Fences and The Piano Lesson. Aunt Esther, the drama’s 287-year-old fiery matriarch, welcomes into her Hill District home Solly Two Kings, who was born into slavery and scouted for the Union Army, and Citizen Barlow, a young man from Alabama searching for a new life. Gem of the Ocean recently played across the country and on Broadway, with Phylicia Rashad as Aunt Esther.

Earlier in 2005, on the completion of the final work of his ten play cycle-surely the most ambitious American dramatic project undertaken in our history-August Wilson disclosed his bout with cancer, an illness of unusual ferocity that would eventually claim his life on October 2. Fittingly the Broadway theatre where his last play will be produced in 2006 has been renamed the August Wilson Theater in his honor. His legacy will animate the theatre and stir the human heart for decades to come.

A Gem of a Play

This is the play about the first decade of The Century Cycle. 1904 is its time, so several of the characters are ex-slaves including Aunt Esther who was born in 1619, the year the first slaves came to America; this very old woman is a soul-cleanser. Citizen Barlow comes from Alabama for cleansing. Caesar Wilks is an enforcer for the white establishment. Solly Two Kings used to help on the underground railroad. Aunt Esther takes Citizen Barlow on a spiritual ride to the "City of Bones." The people in the house dance and play juba and sing ring-shout songs, hangovers from slavery. However, Caesar is there to crush any displays of resistance to to the established order and carry out the tragic ending.

A brilliant start for the ten-play cycle depicting the African-American adventure in the United States. All ten plays were nominated for at least one drama award (this one for a Tony). Most were nominated for at least three awards. Eight won at least one of the awards. Eight won a New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best play. One won a Drama Desk Award for best play. One won a Tony for best play. Two won a Pulitzer Prize for best drama. August Wilson is one of the top five American playwrights of the 20th century.

a powerful statement on America at the turn of the last century

August Wilson's "Century Cycle" is a serial of 10 plays, each set in a different decade of the 20th century, each addressing the historical challenges African-Americans faced at that time, as well as speaking to the wider problems and issues that tie us together as humanity. The first play in the Cycle, _Gem of the Ocean_, is set in Pittsburgh in 1904. The primary players are Aunt Esther, a "soul-cleanser", Solly Two Kings, a former conductor on the underground railroad, and Citizen Barlow, a young man newly arrived up north from Alabama. As with many of Wilson's plays, the connection between past and present is of primary importance - in _Gem of the Ocean_, Barlow seeks to have his soul cleansed for a crime he has committed.

In "cleaning his soul," Esther takes Barlow (and the audience) on a spiritual journey aboard a slave ship, the "Gem of the Ocean," helping Barlow (and the audience) understand the journey that African-Americans have been on, and which we Americans (black and white) are still on. Rather than blame or preach about the evils of slavery and how it has affected African-Americans, Wilson instead asks us to pause, think and reflect on the injustices we have done and which have been done to us - and he asks us how we can make these transgressions right.

I have not yet had the opportunity to see the play performed, although I hope to soon; the play itself is an easy read (just under 90 pages), but a masterpiece writen by an author at the peak of his craft. Highly recommended.

Yao Wang received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1983 and 1985, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1990. Since 1990, she has been with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY. Her research areas include video communications, multimedia signal processing, and medical imaging. She has authored and co-authored over 100 papers in journals and conference proceedings. She is a senior member of IEEE and has served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology and the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. She won the Mayor's Award of the City of New York for Excellence in Science and Technology in the Young Investigator category in 2000.

Jörn Ostermann studied electrical engineering and communications engineering at the University of Hannover and Imperial College London, respectively. He received Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. from the University of Hannover in 1988 and 1994, respectively. He has been a staff member with Image Processing and Technology Research, AT&T Labs¾Research since 1996, where he is engaged in research on video coding, shape coding, multi-modal human-computer interfaces with talking avatars, standardization, and image analysis. He is a German National Foundation scholar. In 1998, he received the AT&T Standards Recognition Award and the ISO award. He is a member of the IEEE, the IEEE Technical Committee on Multimedia Signal Processing, and chair of the IEEE CAS Visual Signal Processing and Communications (VSPC) Technical Committee.

Ya-Qin Zhang received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1983 and 1985, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from George Washington University in 1989. He is currently the Managing Director of Microsoft Research in Beijing, after leaving his post as the Director of Multimedia Technology Laboratory at the Sarnoff Corporation in Princeton, NJ (formerly the David Sarnoff Research Center, and RCA Laboratories). He has been engaged in research and commercialization of MPEG2/DTV, MPEG4/VLBR, and multimedia information technologies. He has authored and co-authored over 200-refereed papers in leading international conference proceedings and journals. He has been granted over 40 U.S. patents in digital video, Internet, multimedia, wireless and satellite communications. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology from 1997 to 1999. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

In the past decade or so, there have been fascinating developments in multimedia representation and communications. First of all, it has become very clear that all aspects of media are "going digital"; from representation to transmission, from processing to retrieval, from studio to home. Second, there have been significant advances in digital multimedia compression and communication algorithms, which make it possible to deliver high-quality video at relatively low bit rates in today's networks. Third, the advancement in VLSI technologies has enabled sophisticated software to be implemented in a cost-effective manner. Last but not least, the establishment of half a dozen international standards by ISO/MPEG and ITU-T laid the common groundwork for different vendors and content providers.

At the same time, the explosive growth in wireless and networking technology has profoundly changed the global communications infrastructure. It is the confluence of wireless, multimedia, and networking that will fundamentally change the way people conduct business and communicate with each other. The future computing and communications infrastructure will be empowered by virtually unlimited bandwidth, full connectivity, high mobility, and rich multimedia capability.

As multimedia becomes more pervasive, the boundaries between video, graphics, computer vision, multimedia database, and computer networking start to blur, making video processing an exciting field with input from many disciplines. Today, video processing lies at the core of multimedia. Among the many technologies involved, video coding and its standardization are definitely the key enablers of these developments. This book covers the fundamental theory and techniques for digital video processing, with a focus on video coding and communications. It is intended as a textbook for a graduate-level course on video processing, as well as a reference or self-study text for researchers and engineers. In selecting the topics to cover, we have tried to achieve a balance between providing a solid theoretical foundation and presenting complex system issues in real video systems.

SYNOPSIS

Chapter 1 gives a broad overview of video technology, from analog color TV system to digital video. Chapter 2 delineates the analytical framework for video analysis in the frequency domain, and describes characteristics of the human visual system. Chapters 3-12 focus on several very important sub-topics in digital video technology. Chapters 3 and 4 consider how a continuous-space video signal can be sampled to retain the maximum perceivable information within the affordable data rate, and how video can be converted from one format to another. Chapter 5 presents models for the various components involved in forming a video signal, including the camera, the illumination source, the imaged objects and the scene composition. Models for the three-dimensional (3-D) motions of the camera and objects, as well as their projections onto the two-dimensional (2-D) image plane, are discussed at length, because these models are the foundation for developing motion estimation algorithms, which are the subjects of Chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 6 focuses on 2-D motion estimation, which is a critical component in modern video coders. It is also a necessary preprocessing step for 3-D motion estimation. We provide both the fundamental principles governing 2-D motion estimation, and practical algorithms based on different 2-D motion representations. Chapter 7 considers 3-D motion estimation, which is required for various computer vision applications, and can also help improve the efficiency of video coding.

Chapters 8-11 are devoted to the subject of video coding. Chapter 8 introduces the fundamental theory and techniques for source coding, including information theory bounds for both lossless and lossy coding, binary encoding methods, and scalar and vector quantization. Chapter 9 focuses on waveform-based methods (including transform and predictive coding), and introduces the block-based hybrid coding framework, which is the core of all international video coding standards. Chapter 10 discusses content-dependent coding, which has the potential of achieving extremely high compression ratios by making use of knowledge of scene content. Chapter 11 presents scalable coding methods, which are well-suited for video streaming and broadcasting applications, where the intended recipients have varying network connections and computing powers. Chapter 12 introduces stereoscopic and multiview video processing techniques, including disparity estimation and coding of such sequences.

Chapters 13-15 cover system-level issues in video communications. Chapter 13 introduces the H.261, H.263, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 standards for video coding, comparing their intended applications and relative performance. These standards integrate many of the coding techniques discussed in Chapters 8-11. The MPEG-7 standard for multimedia content description is also briefly described. Chapter 14 reviews techniques for combating transmission errors in video communication systems, and also describes the requirements of different video applications, and the characteristics of various networks. As an example of a practical video communication system, we end the text with a chapter devoted to video streaming over the Internet and wireless network. Chapter 15 discusses the requirements and representative solutions for the major subcomponents of a streaming system.

SUGGESTED USE FOR INSTRUCTION AND SELF-STUDY

As prerequisites, students are assumed to have finished undergraduate courses in signals and systems, communications, probability, and preferably a course in image processing. For a one-semester course focusing on video coding and communications, we recommend covering the two beginning chapters, followed by video modeling (Chapter 5), 2-D motion estimation (Chapter 6), video coding (Chapters 8-11), standards (Chapter 13), error control (Chapter 14) and video streaming systems (Chapter 15). On the other hand, for a course on general video processing, the first nine chapters, including the introduction (Chapter 1), frequency domain analysis (Chapter 2), sampling and sampling rate conversion (Chapters 3 and 4), video modeling (Chapter 5), motion estimation (Chapters 6 and 7), and basic video coding techniques (Chapters 8 and 9), plus selected topics from Chapters 10-13 (content-dependent coding, scalable coding, stereo, and video coding standards) may be appropriate. In either case, Chapter 8 may be skipped or only briefly reviewed if the students have finished a prior course on source coding. Chapters 7 (3-D motion estimation), 10 (content-dependent coding), 11 (scalable coding), 12 (stereo), 14 (error-control), and 15 (video streaming) may also be left for an advanced course in video, after covering the other chapters in a first course in video. In all cases, sections denoted by asterisks (*) may be skipped or left for further exploration by advanced students.

Problems are provided at the end of Chapters 1-14 for self-study or as homework assignments for classroom use. Appendix D gives answers to selected problems. The website for this book ( www.prenhall.com/wang ) provides MATLAB scripts used to generate some of the plots in the figures. Instructors may modify these scripts to generate similar examples. The scripts may also help students to understand the underlying operations. Sample video sequences can be downloaded from the website, so that students can evaluate the performance of different algorithms on real sequences. Some compressed sequences using standard algorithms are also included, to enable instructors to demonstrate coding artifacts at different rates by different techniques.

The book is incomplete

This book covers a lot of topics in one, including many state-of-art developments. The first half of the book covers the fundamentals of image and video coding and processing techniques. This part is not much different from other image/video processing books with basic theories and plenty of maths. The latter part contains new stuff, but I was disappointed by its incomplete introductions. Many sections assume the readers have good background and very briefly mention the topic without even defining some terms beforehand. It is recommended to read the referenced journal papers before trying to understand this part. Wavelet is only covered in several pages. A missing part!

This new textbook covers basic topics on digital video processing as well as a variety of advanced topics on video coding and communication. The authors have been doing leading research on video processing and communications for years. We used it to cover the video topics in a graduate introductory course on image and video processing, and also plan to use it as a reference book for a advanced topic course on multimedia communications. The material is clearly presented with many illustrations. Later parts of the book give a good overview of the state-of-the-art technologies on video compression and communication. There is also an appendix section giving the answers to selected problems. In my opinion, the book is a very good starting point for people interested in the video technologies. It helps to build solid foundations. The book can be complemented with latest research papers for advanced study, or with detailed video coding standards for implementing practical systems.

This volume consists of lectures delivered during my tenure of the Chair of Poetry at Oxford and not included in Shakespearean Tragedy. Most of them have been enlarged, and all have been revised. As they were given at intervals, and the majority before the publication of that book, they contained repetitions which I have not found it possible wholly to remove. Readers of a lecture published by the University of Manchester on English Poetry and German Philosophy in the Age of Wordsworth will pardon also the restatement of some ideas expressed in it.

The several lectures are dated, as I have been unable to take account of most of the literature on their subjects published since they were delivered.

They are arranged in the order that seems best to me, but it is of importance only in the case of the four which deal with the poets of Wordsworth's time.

About the Author
Andrew Cecil Bradley was born in 1851 in Cheltenham. He was the son of a clergyman and the younger brother of the philosopher F.H. Bradley. He received his education at Cheltenham College and at Balliol College, Oxford, where he became a fellow in 1874, lecturing in Philosophy and English. In 1882 Bradley became the first Professor of Literature and History at Liverpool, and later on Professor of English Language and Literature at Glasgow from 1890, and Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1901 until 1906, when he retired from academic life.

The master critic on Shakespeare, Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth

This set of essays by the master Shakespeare critic A.C. Bradley contains essays on :Poetry for Poetry's Sake, The Sublime, Hegel's Theory of Tragedy, Wordsworth, Shelley's View of Poetry, The Long Poem in the Age of Wordsworth, The Letters of Keats, The Rejection of Falstaff, Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare the Man, Shakespeare's Theatre and Audience.
I especially enjoyed the essay on Keats where Bradley focuses on the meaning of Beauty in Keats' letters. His appreciation of the remarkable character of Keats and how this is reflected both in the Letters and the Poems is instructive. The essay on Shakespeare the Man I found a bit speculative , yet another attempt to say something about the character of the character who mastered and made so many different characters. It is interesting that Bradley believes that Shakespeare is the poet who best exemplified Keats' prescription for what a poet ideally should be, one whose negative capability means he is within and without all the characters he creates. The essay on Wordsworth focuses on his originality especially in finding in the simplicities of daily life, and in simple characters the deepest expressions of human soul.
But there is much more than I have indicated here . This is a classic set of essays by one of the English literary traditions, most important critics.

A C Bradley at his best

I am a fan of the writings of A C Bradley, in my mind the finest critic of William Shakespeare. As opposed to "Shakesperean Tragedy". his epic, this book contains criticism of authors other than Shakespeare, although his criticism of Anthony and Cleopatra is superb. Any one who enjoys Shakesperean criticism will, I think, find much to enjoy in this book.

About the Author
Anzia Yezierska (1882-1970) was born in Poland and came to the Lower East Side of New York with her family in 1890 when she was nine years old. By the 1920s she had risen out of poverty and become a successful writer of stories, novels―all autobiographical―and an autobiography, Red Ribbon on a White Horse (Persea). Her novel Bread Givers (Persea) is considered a classic of Jewish American fiction. Her acclaimed books also include How I Found America: Collected Stories and The Open Cage. She died in 1970.

"Bread Givers" by Anzia Yezierska was a delightful discovery. It is unique in modern literature, as a portrait of a poor Jewish immigrant family told through the perspective of the youngest daughter. Based very much on Yezierska's real life experiences, it is a testament that offers insight into a time past and into some very common experiences. While the overall picture is bleak, Yezierska weaves a thread of hope through all the despair in her main character's life.

Sara Smolinsky is the youngest daughter in a family of four daughters, headed by a strict Orthodox rabbi of a father, who lives to read and gain wisdom from the Torah. The women in his family are meant to support him in this effort, no matter the cost to their health or happiness. Sara watches as her father allows his wife and daughters to nearly kill themselves slaving for every scrap of money, food, and clothing, and then interfere in their love lives by choosing inadequate husbands for them. His wife and three oldest daughters give in to him, but Sara refuses to have her spirit broken, running away and working to educate herself so that she can fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher.

Yezeriska was a gifted storyteller, crafting an extremely readable tale in simple prose, ignited every so often with profound illuminations regarding life and love. While it is terribly hard to like Reb Smolinsky for how he treats his family, Yezierska still allows readers to pass their own judgment rather than tell them what to think. It is an intimate portrait of the traditional world unable to compete with the new world that was unfolding in America at the time. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

I wanted to shake some sense into Sara's father

for being such a tyrant, for spoiling his daughters' wedding plans, and for RUINING their lives -- and believe me-- that kind of stuff REALLY went on in those days! And I wanted to shake some sense into her mother for PUTTING UP WITH THIS!!!

Sara Smolinsky's life most probably parallels Anzia's real life. And if that is true, then I have the UTMOST respect for Sara/Anzia who against all odds, and especially as a woman back in the 1920's, found a place for herself and worked VERY hard to get that education and respect and "the good life" that all the middle-class American kids took for granted.

Someone reading this book today -- who has not read any books on the Immigrant experience or who has not become aquainted with Immigrant life in America in the early 20th Century -- wouldn't have a CLUE as to what it was really like back then, and to them this book would perhaps only serve to confuse or bore (!) them. Hopefully this book will not only shake readers out of their complacency, but it will encourage them to read other books about the Immigrant experience, such as "call it Sleep" by Roth.

The Bread-Givers is a great book.

Scenes from Village Life, a New York Times Notable Book, was awarded the Prix Méditerranée Étranger in 2010. He lives in Tel Aviv, Israel.

NICHOLAS DE LANGE is a professor at the University of Cambridge and a renowned translator. He has translated Amos Oz’s work since the 1960s.

Can anything by OZ be less than perfect ?

I must admit that Amos Oz is my favorite writer. The themes and stories are of course wonderful but what I have really learned to appreciate are the beautiful phrases in his work. It's amazing that a book written originally in Hebrew has made me appreciate English even more. I read his books differently than others, slowly, smoothly, I do not gobble them.

All of his books are good, but this one is a little bit darker than the others. To really enjoy him, start with one of his others and come back to this one.

A gem on many levels

This book is a gem on many levels:

1) On the history and development of spy planes: This has been covered by many previous reviews on this book. So, I won't write more here.

2) On creativity: There are a lot of books on creativity. Many of them are trivial. Most are written by people who themselves have not design or deliver noteworthy innovations that are of national or international significance. This book is different. It is written by a person who has contributed innovations at, and even run Skunk Works, which has delivered innovation after innovation that are internationally significant.

How does a smart scientist or engineer determine if an organization is a place of major technical inventions? This book tells you the characteristics of such organizations. How do you organize and run a place that can deliver breakthrough innovations at bargain prices? This book gives you the principles on how to do it correctly.

3) On cold war and patriotism: This book gives you a glimpse into the cold war, and the hair-triggering tension of nuclear war between U.S. and the ex-Soviet Union. Also, it shows the patriotism among the U.S. government officials, top military echelons, pilots, and civilian scientists and engineers. Even more, it shows how Skunk Works' technologies tipped the power towards the U.S.

4) On biographies: This book is a partial and vivid biography of both Kelly Johnson and Ben Rich. Their personal traits, both strengths and flaws, are clearly described.

5) On Navy's major shortcomings: Kelly's fifteenth principle of rather to starve than to deal with the Navy is nothing short of astonishment. The descriptions of the Navy's sticking to Aegis frigate rather than Skunk Works' SWATH ship, and preferring traditional submarines rather than stealth submarines are so, so astounding. Right now, U.S. has the world's greatest naval power. U.S. naval power could have been much, much greater and the cost to the tax payers could have been much, much lower cost if the Navy had adopted stealth technologies from Skunk Works.

6) On the harmful effects of government interferences, wastes and bureaucratic madness: Reading this book and you can understand why we spend so much in defense and get so little in return.

Overall, this book deserves more than 5 stars. It should be read by CEOs and CTOs (Chief Technology Officer) of every major and high tech corporation looking for ways to leapfrog the competitions. It should be read by every Secretary of Defense and officers in high military echelons looking for military technologies to surpass other nations. It should be read by every bright scientists and engineers looking for a place to work where major innovations can be produced. It should be read by every science and engineering professors on how to educate future generations of science and engineering students that can create and innovate.

Awesome aerospace/military history

Skunk works is the true story behind the coolest, high tech, top secret, aerospace engineering division operated by the Lockheed Martin corporation. Forged by legendary U. Michigan alumnus Kelly Johnson, the Skunk Works has created the coolest planes of recent memory, including the SR-71 Blackbird (currently visible on the flight deck of the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier in NYC), the F117A Stealth Fighter, and the U2 spy plane. The F22 Raptor and the Joint Strike Fighter are also creations of the Skunk Works, but are not covered in this autobiography written by the successor to Kelly Johnson, Ben Rich.
This quick read is well worth your while for a couple of reasons. First, the stories behind the creation of these planes is very interesting. For example, the Skunk Works engineers found the mathematical key to the stealth design buried within an obscure physics journal originally published in Russian. Oddly, the Russians military never capitalized on the principle, despite urgings from the article's Russian author. Furthermore, when the stealth plane was first designed and kept in a secret hanger infested with some bats, the bats couldn't detect the plane with their "sonar-like" sense, and they ended up crashing into it.
The book also makes for excellent military and therefore world history. Accomplishments of the U2 spy plane and the F117-A Stealth Fighter are covered in depth and literally changed the course of world events during the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, the Gulf War, and other skirmishes. Many interesting, behind the scenes (formerly classified?) missions are also revealed in this book. Ben Rich also speculates on the future types of planes currently on the minds of engineers at the Skunk Works, and the implications will change how wars are fought in the future.
For readers who liked this book, NOVA recently published a video on the creation of the Joint Strike Fighter, a contract fought over between the Skunk Works and the Phantom Works of Boeing. These do all fighters are amazing, and this video is definately worth watching for those who enjoyed "Skunk Works."

Engrossing true story

I'm not particularly an avid reader of military history books or contemporary history books in general, but after a coworker described this book, curiosity got the better of me and I bought it. I'm glad I did.
Ben R. Rich joined the legendary 'Skunk Works' as a young engineer, worked on some of the most secretive military projects in recent history, and later ended up taking over management of Skunk Works. As a result, perhaps no one else in the world has as much first hand knowledge of these projects, and no one else is better positioned to chronicle some of America's military crown jewels.
Rich (and Janos) have crafted a unique book that gives Ben Rich story, with interesting first hand accounts from pilots, air force personnel, and highly placed government officials. Rich covers the struggles encountered while building various classified aircraft: the U2, SR-71 BlackBird, the stealth fighter, the stealth boat, among others. He also lightly delves into the darker side of the defense industry: politics, waste, and bureaucracy.
An amazing read, and highly recommended.
