Review
"Any developer who would work with volume graphics needs this basic text, which provides an introduction to texture-based volume rendering methods, techniques, and optimization routines. Even code examples are included within the examples and technical discussions of generating images from 3D scalar data. It's an advanced computer and game developer's primer important for any comprehensive collection." -Califonia Bookwatch: The Computer Shelf, The Midwest Book Review, November 2006

A very pragmatic book!
By Frank Kane
While volume graphics have historically been in the realm of scientific visualization, modern GPU's make it possible to render gaseous phenomena such as clouds and fire using true volumetric data in games and simulators at high framerates. Using real-time ray casting to render these objects is quite feasible on modern GPU's, but it's an intimidating-sounding technique.

It really isn't, and this book helps to demystify volumetric rendering using 3D textures, GPU ray-casting, and other techniques. It really isn't hard to understand the concepts; this book presents the math behind it well without going overboard - it's all well-explained.

What's really valuable, however, is all the practical advice stashed in here. If you've experimented with real-time ray casting before, you've likely beaten your head against the wall fighting sampling artifacts, figuring out how to properly add procedural noise to the results, and squeezing enough performance out of your fragment program to not slow down the rest of your scene. If you got past all those hurdles, then you probably gave up when you had to figure out how to deal with intersections between your volume and the rest of your scene, or what to do when the camera goes inside the volume.

This book has chapters on all of those topics, and that's what makes this an invaluable reference for volume graphics that are part of bigger applications. Most of the other research and material on this subject assume you're rendering a single object in isolation, but in a game engine that isn't the case. This book bridges the gap between scientific visualization, games and other visual simulation applications, and finally makes these exciting techniques accessible to a whole new class of applications.

Once it all comes together, the results are truly amazing. You'll find yourself using volume graphics for all sorts of situations and adding an incredible air of reality to your applications as a result. Highly recommended!

Good theory book, not so much programmers' book
By M. Duncan
This is a great book to learn much of the theory for volume rendering. Though there are some program listings, most are fragments. Some contain pseudo code which makes for a difficult experience when a developer is trying to understand the program let alone the theory.

All in all, still quite a good book with rich theory; color photos and beautiful glossy pages however I would not recommend as a sole source of reading for entry-level volume graphic developers.

Good book
By Francisco R. O.
If there were many more real time volume graphics books out there, it will be easier to compare.

The book is excellent in covering GPU Real Time Graphics. I wish it would had use CUDA or something else, or see an updated version of the book... that is far as the technology behind it. The concepts are great.

It is the thirty-second millennium and the Imperium is at peace. The Traitor Legions of Chaos are but a distant memory and the many alien races that have long plagued mankind are held in check by the Space Marines. When a mission to exterminate one such xenos breed on the world of Ardamantua draws in more of their forces, the Imperial Fists abandon the walls of Terra for the first time in more than a thousand years. And when another, greater, foe strikes, even the heroic sons of Rogal Dorn may be powerless against it. The Beast Arises… and it is mighty.

Good start to a series, if you're already a fan
By S. Anderson
The first book in "The Beast Arises" event series from Black Library. I won't say it was my favorite of Abnett's books, but as an introduction to a longer event series it did everything it needed to do. There is no question in my mind that I'm going to read book 2 X("Predator, Prey" by Rob Sanders). Do be warned though, it is very much a set up for an ongoing narrative, there really isn't much satisfying resolution here in book 1.

I normally shy away from the purely Astartes (Space Marine) books since I prefer the politics that happen with the other Adeptus in the Imperium but there is a side plot which sets up a very solid political conflict alongside the straight up 'only way' the setting is known for.

Good for fans of Abnett who are interested in getting involved in a longer (non-Horus Heresy era) story line, though it's still the 32nd millennium, so well before the 'modern' 40k timeline.

If you're new to the Warhammer 40k setting, I'd start elsewhere though. Ciaphas Cain: Hero of the Imperium is a good place to start.

Daylight Wall Stands Forever
By Perry Allen Smith
Just finished this. It's the first in a 12-volume story about how an ork war campaign erupts from seemingly nowhere, carving a huge and bloody path straight through the Imperium and threatening to destroy Earth ("Terra") itself.

And man is it good.

The main characters are the Imperial Fists, the Successor Chapter that kept the name of the First Founding's original Legion of Space Marines. The main character of them is Second Captain Koorland of Daylight Wall, nicknamed Slaughter. You are also introduced to a number of other characters, including a host of Imperial rulers, the High Lords of Terra, who are awful at anything other than lining their own pockets. Only Wienand (Inquisition rep) and Vangorich (Assassin Grand Master) seem to comprehend that the ruling body is a joke, but while they are allies, borderline friends, Wienand keeps a lot of secrets (she knows the orks are coming, but refuses to tell Vangorich). Heth, the Navy's High Lord, is a good guy, but like virtually all the good guys, he's killed at the end of the book when the orks attack.

Which is what the title is actually about. Koorland's alias is just ONE reason for the book's name: it's also what the orks' warboss declares to the Imperium, and is a possible translation of his name. And damn if he doesn't deliver on his promise, because the Imperial Fists are utterly wrecked by book's end.

But there is a third reason: there is a former Assassin, codenamed Beast Krule, who plays an increasingly-important role in the story. Just how important has yet to be revealed, but him in action is the last thing we see, and it is short, efficient, and brutally savage. A beast indeed.

Some would decry Abnett as overrated, that Games Workshop/Black Library slaps his name on something and it sells despite lacking any real quality. I staunchly disagree. This book may be short, but it is riveting, and it's an excellent start to a series that means to show why the greenskins are just as dangerous as any foe of the Imperium.

Quite good although not his best
By JPS
As another reviewer mentioned, “I am Slaughter” is indeed the first of a new Series taking place a thousand years after the Horus Heresy, with Dan Abnett, one of the most successful authors at the Black Library, kicking off this new collection. Although I will try as much as possible to avoid or limit spoilers, the following review may nevertheless include some, if only to explain how and why I reached the conclusion that this book, while quite good and enjoyable, was not one of the author’s best.

The glimpses of the Empire post Horus Heresy, and of the somewhat decayed Council of the High Lords of Terra are among the best pieces. I particularly liked the power plays and rivalries between factions, and the character of Vangoritch, the Master of the Assassins. Also interesting are the double meaning of the book’s title and of the collection’s subtitle (“the Beast arises”), both of which I will let you discover without providing any further explanations.

However, I was a bit less carried away with the plot and could not help the impression that there were holes or inconsistencies in it. I liked the idea of an Empire whose enemies had been defeated or pushed back to the edges of its frontiers and which has accordingly grown sufficiently complacent to wonder whether Space Marines are still needed and useful. I also “bought” the idea of an infestation of Xenos called Chromes, which indeed closely resemble the “bugs” found in Starship Troopers at a planet a mere 6 weeks away from Terra. This is, however, were some of the inconsistencies creep in. The menace is deemed to be sufficiently serious to commit most – and then all – of the Imperial Fists Chapter but not serious enough to trigger the recall of any of the other Chapters to either support them or replace them in guarding the Imperial Palace. Also, and while much is made of the role of the Fists and their duty in guarding the Walls of the Palace, nothing is mentioned about their predecessors. What happened to the Custodes, the Emperor’s own bodyguard sometimes depicted as forming an additional Legion and whose duty it was to secure the Palace?

The pacing of the story-telling is quite good. As in some of his previous books, Dan Abnett has used one of his usual ploys in having the story jump back and forth between events taking place on Terra and those taking place on and around the planet infested by the bugs. This, of course, contributes to the suspense and the sense of urgency that pervades the book. This is quite well done and efficient, even if, at times, it may appear to be a bit artificial and excessive.

Another little gripe is that the reader simply is not told where the “Chromes” come from, although this is probably intentional. What is less satisfying – and perhaps another inconsistency - is to have the book opening with the Fists fighting their way into their hives only to learn latter on that the “Chromes” are flying from an even greater enemy that is even more threatening for the Empire.

I was also a bit disappointed with Abnett’s presentation of the Fists, perhaps because their characteristics as masters of siege and defensive warfare hardly come into play at all in this book. I could not help feeling that, apart from the colour of their armour and their role as guardians of the Imperial Palace, both of which are mentioned numerous times, there was little if anything in this book to distinguish them from any other Space Marines Chapter. I could not help finding the endless carving up and chopping of the Chromes into bit by the Fists as somewhat tedious and unoriginal.

However, I rather liked the multiple allusions to their glorious past as the ultimate defenders of the Imperial Palace although I could not help thinking that before embarking on a new Series, I (and many other readers) would have, once again, preferred to read about the great Siege, rather than its sequel a thousand years later. I also liked the impression that Abnett managed to give of the Fists in particular, and the Imperial Armed Forces in general: that of a Chapter and Forces which were somewhat living on their glorious and past reputation. Also good was their eagerness and need to prove their worth, and eagerness for which they will pay heavily.

As a result of all this, I felt that this one was just about worth four stars, despite (and because) of my little grips, but not five.

A Good Book!
By robin cobbey
This is a well told story of a young woman returning to her grandfather's home in the Highlands after the death of her parents. You learn about whiskey distillery operations, falconry, and the social interactions of the Highlands a hundred years ago. The story evolves into a bit of a mystery with a dramatic ending. Very satisfying.

This was a good read. I had one plot twist figured out pretty early, but the final twist was a total surprise. Usually Agatha Christie is the only one who can do that to me.

Snapshots of the Trial
By Acute Observer
Joseph Bosco is a journalist who has written other books on true crime. He tells the story as he sees it. The `Acknowledgments' thanks the prosecution team, the defense team, the Sheriff's Office, the LAPD, the media reporters, and many, many others. This very readable book lacks an index and is not a good reference. But it is a unique eyewitness account of the trial. Chapter 21 explains "reasonable doubt". The State's case must "exclude all reasonable hypothesis of innocence". Any scenario supported by evidence that could exculpate the defendant creates reasonable doubt that requires a verdict of not guilty. Peter Bozanich said the media was biased against Simpson (p.258). They never criticized the conduct of the prosecution team and a poorly presented case (p.259). The jury followed the evidence and the law. What is the psychological problem of those who hate O. J. Simpson but pass over Timothy McVeigh (p.261)?

The `Introduction' says the book will present "snapshots" of the crime, the trial, and the events. It will probably be different to what you have read. Bosco was amazed by the taped and edited segments of the trial on television because it was different from what he saw in the courtroom (p.xv). This book will not cover broad aspects of the trial but with the pivotal "facts" of the case. In effect, it is why they voted "not guilty" (pp.xvi-xvii). Bosco's past knowledge of a "blood case" murder made him more knowledgeable; he was a friend of Dr. Henry Lee, the "pre-eminent forensic scientist". Bosco says Detective Vannatter did not call the designated Deputy District Attorney but Marcia Clark (p.xix). No explanation given.

Chapter 1 asks if the case against OJ was "almost too perfect" because it could be a frame-up (p.1)? Chapter 2 tells why the grand jury was dismissed - it would not indict on murder (pp.8-9). Chapter 4 comments on the DA's arrogance. Office politics eliminated the best prosecutors (p.22). The LAPD's rating is on page 23. [Did you see that on TV?] The public did not see all that happened (p.40). Reporters were afraid (p.42). Chapter 7 notes the blunders of the prosecution (p.57). The jurors did not believe in a lone killer (p.63). What happened in the court was not on TV (p.68). Chapter 8 lists the mysteries about the murders. Why was the security gate left open (p.73)? The Italian shoes were traced, "none to OJ" (p.75). What about the bloody fingerprints on those glasses (p.76)? The Medical Examiner's autopsies created a problem for the Prosecution (Chapter 10). There are questions about the blood spatter (pp.104-106).

The lack of extensive physical damage on OJ is an argument for his innocence (Chapter 11). Allen Park didn't see the Bronco, or Kato's car either (p.151). Chapter 12 has his comments on Nicole's family. Chapter 13 discusses the status of the blood evidence. The gloves didn't fit (p.167). Bosco blames Marcia Clark for losing the case (Chapter 16). What is the significance of Fuhrman's pointing to the glove (p.219)? There is a theory about planting the glove (p.224). There is more about Fuhrman's importance on page 228. Was there a hidden secret for the prosecution team (p.238)? Was the trial an exercise in Public Relations (p.244)?

The Trial of O.J. Simpson was the most publicized event since the Washington hearings on Watergate and Nixon's impeachment. Why did the corporate media push it so much? Was it a distraction to avoid the problems of NAFTA and similar economic attacks on the middle class? George Orwell's novel "1984" explains how sensational news is used to distract people from events in the real world.

What the media didn't tell you about the O.J. "case"
By A Customer
Only two of the O.J. trial books are really essential reads: Lawrence Schiller's, and this one. Anyone who professes to be "outraged" by the verdict MUST READ THIS. You will still be outraged when you finish ... at all the TV and print media who downplayed much of the evidence that was plainly presented in the courtroom and then had the nerve to blast the jury for returning the only verdict a reasonable person could. Unlike Dominick Dunne, Bosco covered the trial like a real journalist and not a dilettante. The result is many fascinating and unsettling nuggets and factoids. Such as: the truly mercenary nature of the Brown family (Lou Brown had the audacity to lie about not getting child support while O.J. was in jail); the clear evidence that more than one person was directly involved and the unlikeliness that any of the killers were Heisman trophy winners and just how badly the media let themselves be manipulated (I find it unsettling that some of the "respectable" press sold stories to tabloids on the side). For his efforts, Bosco's book goes unreviewed while Dunne writes a forgettable, racist memoir in which he can't even use his own name and gets lionized. There ain't no justice in the world.

Prosperity without Growth: Economics for a Finite Planet, by Tim Jackson

Is more economic growth the solution? Will it deliver prosperity and well-being for a global population projected to reach nine billion? In this explosive book, Tim Jackson - a top sustainability adviser to the UK government - makes a compelling case against continued economic growth in developed nations.

No one denies that development is essential for poorer nations. But in the advanced economies there is mounting evidence that ever-increasing consumption adds little to human happiness and may even impede it. More urgently, it is now clear that the ecosystems that sustain our economies are collapsing under the impacts of rising consumption. Unless we can radically lower the environmental impact of economic activity - and there is no evidence to suggest that we can - we will have to devise a path to prosperity that does not rely on continued growth.

Economic heresy? Or an opportunity to improve the sources of well-being, creativity and lasting prosperity that lie outside the realm of the market? Tim Jackson provides a credible vision of how human society can flourish within the ecological limits of a finite planet. Fulfilling this vision is simply the most urgent task of our times.

This book is a substantially revised and updated version of Jackson's controversial study for the Sustainable Development Commission, an advisory body to the UK Government. The study rapidly became the most downloaded report in the Commission's nine year history when it was launched earlier this year.

Review

'On a planet with finite resources, perpetual growth is not only impossible, but it is endangering the survival of present and future generations. I urge everyone to read Tim Jackson's brilliant and visionary book. He offers a detailed critique of the existing economic paradigm, and makes compelling suggestions for a shared and lasting prosperity.' - Bianca Jagger, Founder and Chair, Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation; Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador; Member of the Executive Director's Leadership Council, Amnesty International, USA; Trustee, Amazon Charitable Trust

'In a world of massive inequality and limited resources, Tim Jackson asks the fundamental questions of what prosperity really is and how we can invest not just in material goods but in each other. This is an outstandingly intelligent and creative contribution to debate.' - The Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury

'Tim Jackson offers a penetrating insight into our current state of affairs, and a thought-provoking pathway towards redesigning our future.' - Dame Ellen MacArthur

'The question of whether progressives should abandon growth or continue a champion it remains unresolved. But attempts to short-circuit that debate by dismissing de-growth as 'pie-in-the-sky' now face the demanding task of refuting this impressive work. I look forward to Tim Jackson's further elaboration of it.' - David Choat, Policy Progress blog

'One of the most outstanding pieces of environmental economics literature in recent years' - Le Monde

'A new movement seems to be emerging, and this superbly written book should be the first stop for anyone wanting a manifesto... In terms of a worldview for the new decade and beyond, this could well be the most important book you will read.' - The Guardian

'Bold and provocative...' - The New York Times

'In the teeth of the economic crisis, Jackson has written the most important book that could possibly be written now.' - James Gustave Speth, author of The Bridge at the Edge of the World

'This might well become as important for sustainable development as the Brundtland Report.' - Paul-Marie Boulanger, Director of IDD

'Prosperity without Growth's hugely encouraging and thrilling theme is that humanity can prosper without growth. In fact there is no other way left to us.' - Dr Robert Goodland, former Adviser to the World Bank Group, winner of World Conservation Union's Coolidge Medal of Honor, 2008

'Tim Jackson's book simply resets the agenda for Western society.' - Bernie Bulkin, SDC commissioner for Climate Change, Energy and Transport

'A must-read for anyone concerned with issues of climate change and sustainability - bold, original and comprehensive. We have to define prosperity and welfare differently from the past and separate them from economic growth measured as GDP: this work shows how we should set about the task.' - Anthony Giddens, Emeritus Professor, London School of Economics

'Jackson's cutting edge research has already begun to re-define the debate about how to achieve a future of human and planetary well-being. A must-read.' - Juliet Schor, author of Plenitude: The New Economics of True Wealth, and Professor of Sociology, Boston College

'Jackson goes after the complacency and dishonesty at the heart of contemporary politics, and provides a brilliant and compelling account of the crucial importance of the growth debate.' - Jonathon Porritt, former chair of the UK Sustainable Development Commission

'The best account of the financial crises and the state of society I have read in a long time. . . The beauty is that the change that is needed will make us happier.' - Clare Short, MP

'Zero growth is not only necessary, it is inevitable and will supercede Selfish Capitalism. In this brilliant analysis, Tim Jackson lays bare a system in crisis and lights the way forward.' - Oliver James, Author of Affluenza

'Tim Jackson provides a convincing case as to why conventional economic growth has not and cannot deliver prosperity. By showing why this is the case, we have the tools to start to build an economy based on sustainable development.' - Jan Bebbington, Professor of Accounting and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews

'A vital, much-needed, and timely work that deserves to be widely read, this is more than a brilliant treatise on the difficulties of developing a truly sustainable economy. It is also an important contribution to the increasingly urgent debate over the nature of the good life and the good society.' - Professor Colin Campbell, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of York

'Economic growth is both unsustainable on a finite planet and undesirable in its failure to continue to improve real welfare. What we need is true prosperity without growth. Why we must have this and how it can be achieved are compellingly explained in this essential work. It is not sacrifice to adopt the measures advocated. It is a sacrifice of our current and future well-being not to.' - Robert Costanza, Portland State University Professor of Sustainability and Director, Institute for Sustainable Solutions

'Provokes official thought on the unthinkable. No small accomplishment! I hope this gets the serious attention it deserves.' - Professor Herman Daly, author of Steady-State Economics and recipient of the Honorary Right Livelihood Award (Sweden's alternative to the Nobel Prize)

'What makes it unthinkable to stop growth even though it is killing us? Tim Jackson boldly confronts the structural Catch-22 that drives this madness and proposes in this lucid, persuasive, and blessedly readable book how we might begin to get off the fast track to self-destruction. Don't miss it!' - Dianne Dumanoski, author of The End of the Long Summer and co-author of Our Stolen Future

'Tim Jackson cuts through the official cant and wishful thinking to tell us what we have refused to admit we cannot preserve a habitable planet and pursue endless economic growth at the same time. In an era when all ideologies have failed, this book lays out the basis for the only viable political philosophy for the 21st century.' - Clive Hamilton, Author of Growth Fetish and Professor of Public Ethics, Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, Australia (Forthcoming Earthscan title: Requiem for a Species)

'If you want to understand why current growth centric economics is not fit for purpose then read this book. This is the clearest and most important contribution to proving it's time to rethink growth economics in order to live the low carbon, poverty free and one planet life we all need and want.' - Alan Knight, Founder of Singleplanetliving

'Endless growth on a finite planet, or endless misery-spreading recession, both represent impossible futures. Here are some very powerful steps towards a possible, indeed a very hopeful, alternate outcome!' - Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy

'We were delighted when Professor Jackson spoke at our July Meeting at Lloyds Banking HQ in London. He endorsed the feelings of many in the BCSD-UK that business as usual is not an option. His clear and concise challenge of what is considered convention is timely and highly appropriate.' - David Middleton, CEO, Business Council for Sustainable Development UK

'Prosperity without Growth says it all: informatively, clearly, inspiringly, critically and constructively, starting from the very troubled, unsustainable and unsatisfying economy we have today and providing a robust combination of suggestions for going toward a sustainable economy and fulfilling lives.' - Richard Norgaard, University of California, Berkeley

'Rising consumption may not be sustainable, due to climate change, energy shortfalls, and to social and psychological harms. In this compelling argument, Tim Jackson shows how urgent it is to think of what might replace it, and what to aim for.' - Avner Offer, Professor of Economic History at Oxford, author of Challenge of Affluence

'Stimulating and timely. This is the best attempt I've seen to build a trans-disciplinary critique of economic growth, with prescriptions based in economic theory.' - Ronan Palmer, Chief Economist, The Environment Agency

'Tim Jackson's book is a powerful intellectual challenge to an economic orthodoxy out of touch with the real world of physical limits, global warming and peaking oil reserves. It is refreshingly rigorous, honest and hopeful.' - Ann Pettifor, Fellow of the new economics foundation and co-author of the Green New Deal

'When it comes to resolving the tension between the environment and the economy the watchword should be 'less is more'. If you want to find out how we could all be healthier, wealthier and a lot wiser you should read this book.' - Molly Scott Cato, Reader in Green Economics, Cardiff School of Management and Economics Speaker for the Green Party

'We live in a finite world but with infinite demands. Human wants, political convenience and intellectual inertia trump planetary limits. Tim Jackson makes headway in setting signposts towards a more sustainable future.' - Camilla Toulmin, Director of the International Institute for Environment & Development (IIED)

'This is one of the most brilliant analyses I've seen. It is a thoughtful and action-oriented masterpiece, with an eye open to how to overcome resistance to the task ahead.' - Arnold Tukker, Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research

'Tim Jackson's book clearly demonstrates how our passion for consumption drives unsustainable results and it opens up the potential for a new model of consumerism that delivers a more sustainable world.' - Chris Tuppen, Chief Sustainability Officer, British Telecom

'This is an important work, well worth reading.' - Darcy Hitchcock, author of The Business Guide to Sustainability

'It's easy to lament the unsustainable nature of growth economics. It's slightly harder to re-imagine it on the other side. Hardest of all is to detail the transition, how you get from growth to a steady state without breaking the economy. That's the missing piece, and Tim Jackson has boldly stepped into the breach with a book that is clear, balanced and free of political bias. This isn't a blueprint for such a transition, but it does show that it is possible. For that, Prosperity Without Growth has got to be one of the most important books of the year.' - www.makewealthhistory.org

'[Tim Jackson] has done us a tremendous service in putting the debate into practical and comprehensible language, deferring some of the derivations and details to endnotes and appendices, and organizing his message into short self-contained chapters with well researched and documented source material. This book will be a widely read and influential basis for practical exposition of many of our underlying concerns and ideas for their solution to the broader public.' - Ecological Economics

'Jackson's analysis is truly unique in meticulously disentangling the interdependencies between the economic logic of production, the social logic of consumption, and the conflicting position of the state that keeps the unsustainable machinery of growth moving. Jackson also provides an original perspective that identifies leverage points for change that hold the prospect of eventual effectiveness. I have not encountered such a bright and insightful analysis since the path-breaking work of the Donella and Dennis Meadows and Herman Daly.' - Journal of Industrial Ecology

'Budget cuts remind us of our unsustainable current financial system, but the crisis also creates space to consider alternatives. GDP is still king, but in a recent lecture Prof Jackson described how senior civil servants are beginning to debate his alternatives. I think this book can provide us with a language to develop these long overdue debates ourselves.' - Rob Couch, Environmental Health News.

'A hard read but rewarding if you can stay the course.' - Judy Kirby, The Friend

'It is clear that the current pattern of economic growth is simply unsustainable. Jackson in Prosperity without Growth makes the case very clearly and convincingly.' - Fran Baum, Australian Options

'Presents a case against continued economic growth in developed nations and considers how human society can flourish within the ecological limits of a finite planet by reducing emphasis on growth' - Journal of Economic Literature, June 2010

'He recognises that to avoid enormous social disruption, it will take committed governance to manage these changes. I have no idea what critical mass of citizens will be needed to bring such governance. All I can do is to sign up with renewed faith.' - Phil Kingston, Renew

'Prosperity without Growth gets my 'twice read' honour...the book reads something like a novel...Finally, I asked my wife Angie to read the book and summarise it for me. Her conclusion? 'This is a good book that will change your life. Read it' - Vinod Bhatia, JIE

'The form is good - and so is the content. This innovative book is recommended to readers seeking insight into the governance and policy challenges of spreading prosperity while safeguarding the environment.' - getAbstract

'I thought the book was splendid. Jackson's writing is lucid and well organised. He has a gift for the telling sentence.' - Bryan Walker, Hot Topic

Can't have our cake and eat it too...
By David Radcliff
We can't have our cake and eat it too, according to Tim Jackson. While many (or even most) people are convinced that "technology" and ever-increasing efficiencies will allow humankind, and especially us Rich World folks, to live green and still live large, this books demonstrates in well-documented detail the fallacy of this way of thinking. For instance, while we are getting more production for any carbon we emit into the atmosphere (25 percent more efficient globally in the past 40 years), our actual carbon output is up by 80 percent, as more people are finding more ways to burn fossil fuels--in effect overwhelming any impact from being more efficient.

Jackson is thorough in documenting our overuse of important materials such as copper, bauxite and iron ore, which he points out, if the rest of the world used like we do, world supplies would be exhausted within 20 years. He is also quick to note that not only are we exhausting the planet's physical storehouse and storage capacity for things like carbon, we are at the same time driving a large wedge between the haves and have-nots of the world. And more wealth won't solve these inequities: per capita income in the US is some $42,000 per year, yet the US has the largest income stratification of any rich nation.

He blames much of our problem on "novelty"--the pursuit of the new thing. This creates a throwaway society as product after product is "up-graded" for the next model; it also creates persistent anxiety among and between citizens as they strive for acceptance and supremacy via things. He feels that the goal of society should be to create a world that is environmentally sustainable and that focuses on helping people flourish--neither of which can be accomplished in a highly competitive capitalistic society whose mantra is "more." He calls for both local and national initiatives to redefine life, rewarding behaviors that promote the goals mentioned above.

Pithy quote: "Prosperity for the few founded on ecological destruction and persistent social injustice is no foundation for a civilized society."

useful restatement of many good arguments
By Hazel Henderson
A useful re-statement of all the good arguments made over the past 40 years for transforming public policy beyond erroneous economic models. Summarizes the debate and the conclusions on the need to move to low-entropy models based on better understanding of real human needs and goals of equitable, ecologically sustainable prosperity. Some strange omissions, including E. F. Schumacher's Small Is Beautiful (1973) in its heavily focused British literature and the ascribing of the European Commission and the European Parliaments Beyond GDP conferences in 2007 ([...]) to the OECD. A good introduction for those unfamiliar with this 40-year old debate.

It was going well but....
By Erminio Di Lodovico
It is a good book, well written. The first part, where the author makes the case for the unsustainablility of the "growth model" of the economy was very well written. It cannot be said the same about the second part of the book, which was how will be possible the revert and fix the problem. I understand perfectly that it was the most difficult part of the book, and that such a complex matter cannot be fully covered in one book, but I was expecting something more than wishful thinking.
Anyway, it is a book worth reading.
