A RATHER “STEAMY” ACCOUNT OF RESNICK’S FRIENDSHIP WITH NICOLE AND SIMPSON

Author Faye Resnick wrote in the Foreword to this 1994 book, “I will, with all the accuracy and all the honesty I can muster, write about the events that led up to this awful crime. In doing this, I know I must be unflinchingly truthful about myself. Writing this book has been painful… But to tell Nicole’s story honestly, I must also tell you mine. Some of what I say can never be corroborated… But on all that I hold sacred, I promise you the truth. I know that powerful allies of O.J. Simpson will do everything in their power to discredit me… This book is dedicated to the most wonderful friend I have ever known, and to women everywhere who are trapped n corrosive and humiliating relationships like the one Nicole did not survive… Nicole, you have no one to speak for you. Let me try…”

She begins the second chapter with the statement, “One of my most vivid memories… is the night I saw the other side of O.J.’s happy, smiling face. When I tell you about the last times I saw that face, you’ll know why I believe O.J. killed my best friend.” (Pg. 7)

Of the funeral, she says, “I sat down next to O.J. … I said to him, ‘O.J., what happened?’ He never moved, but again I saw the jaw muscles clenching… Then words that are seared into my memory forever spilled out like an unbidden cry.’ ‘Girl… you---out of all of them---know that I loved her too much.’ I was stunned.” (Pg. 25)

She says, “Talking about that awful night with Keith in 1992, Nicole said, ‘When I told O.J. he had no business interfering with my life, he turned it around and said he was concerned that our kids, who were upstairs sleeping, could wake up and walk downstairs. He said it was the wrong thing to be having sex with the kids in the house.’” (Pg. 49)

Resnick admits, “I have been in the Betty Ford Clinic twice and the Exodus Recovery Center once over an eight-year period for cocaine addiction. I honestly believed that I had beaten it after my second Betty Ford trip, but the pressure of watching Nicole’s tragedy weakened me. That is not an excuse; it’s just an opinion.” (Pg. 59)

She suggests, “To understand why O.J. was so compulsively attracted to Nicole, you’d have to understand his mind-set. O.J. seemed to hate being black and… avoided any real contact with the black community… Marguerite was probably the last black woman O.J. would ever be with… Nicole was not the first white woman in O.J.’s life, nor was she the last. Before they met, O.J. had made it a point to be seen with as many beautiful women as possible---and it was generally understood that only whites need apply. His flirtations and affairs while he was married to Nicole, as well as during their separation, invariably were with women who… definitely were a lighter shade of pale.” (Pg. 88-89)

After Simpson joked about the fact that “my wife’s biggest fear in life is frogs, and I’ve just ended up starring in a TV series called ‘The Frogmen’!,” she notes, “Two minutes later, O.J. got up and left… [Nicole] turned to me and said, ‘I don’t think that’s funny… It’s cruel. I’m afraid this man will kill me some day.’ It was one of those shocking statements that are so unbelievable you wonder if you heard right.” (Pg. 143-144) Of the next day, she says, “I will never forget the look on her face when she repeated her astounding statement of the day before. ‘I feel that if we get back together, he’ll end up killing me. I don’t think he’s changed.’” (Pg. 145)

Of the infamous incident in 1989, she recounts Nicole telling her, “Faye, that was the worst night of my life. For hours, I don’t know how long, O.J. would watch TV, then he’d come back, open the closet door, hit me some more, then lock me up again. I was so scared. I wanted to die… I don’t know what was worse, the beatings or that awful FEAR of waiting for him to come back and do it again.” (Pg. 148-149)

Later, she continues speaking for Nicole, “If I’m with him, and I complain about his women, he’s going to beat me. And maybe someday he’ll beat me to death… So that’s my choice, Faye. I think he’ll kill me if I stay with him, so if he’s going to kill me because I’m leaving, I may as well face it now.” (Pg. 171-172)

She says that Simpson later told her, “If she’s with another man, I’ll kill her. You tell her she’d better play her role and look like my wife until August. Stay away from any man until August. You tell her that, Faye!” (Pg. 175)

She also asserts, “we were sipping our cappuccino with a bunch of the Starbucks boys… Nicole had a crush on one of them… His name was Ron Goldman, and the first time I saw him I told Nicole, ‘… he’s absolutely gorgeous!’ Nicole was pleased to hear my judgment. But looking back on it, I feel a lot of guilt… it’s just something that will bother me forever. Let me answer the burning question, once and for all: Nicole and Ron Goldman were not lovers… What is true is that, inevitably, Nicole was going to ‘do’ Ron. It was something that was going to happen. But Nicole was in no rush.” (Pg. 185-186)

She also purports to report a single sexual relationship she had with Nicole: “No, it never happened again. The only discussion Nicole and I ever had was to acknowledge how inevitable it had seemed.” (Pg. 197-199) She adds, “The night Nicole and I were together was unique. We had both been disillusioned and deeply hurt by men and had lost trust in everything but each other. We needed the warmth, closeness, and safety of each other’s arms. However, let me make it clear that neither Nicole nor I were or ever could be [lesbian].” (Pg. 202)

It’s difficult to believe many parts of Resnick’s book. [Why would she not make more an effort to help her “best friend” get out of an abusive relationship like this one?] But “caveat emptor”…

Unique & Important Book

This is a unique and well-written book of advanced therapeutics. It is a great resource for those difficult therapeutic challenges, using a combination of anecdotal experience and thorough literature review. The authors are well-known and universally respected. Unlike many "me too" books in medicine, the style and substance of this book makes it stand out among its peers.
It is friendly and informal, and makes for easy reading. The various quotes used throughout the book beautifully accompany the text and make for a more enjoyable reading experience.

Sandler chronicles the pioneering efforts of the all-black 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Medium Bomber Group during WW II, emphasizing how painfuly aware the pilots and ground crew were of having to "prove" themselves as no white squadron had to. For example, Air Corps chief Gen. Henry Arnold resented their presence in his service: "The Negro tires easily," he wrote in a notorious memo. In a postwar evaluation, the Air Force concluded that the 332nd was a mediocre outfit, "not worth the time and effort"; but Sandler ( The Emergence of the Modern Capital Ship ) argues that the record demonstrates that it was a "good to average" group whose efficiency was warped by the demands of racial segregation. The unit's war record was unique in one respect: in its hundreds of escort missions, the 332nd did not lose a single bomber to enemy aircraft. The 477th never saw action. Drawn from interviews and offical documents, this important history reveals how the wartime experience of a relative handful of black pilots and crewmen opened the way for racial integration of the armed forces within five years after the end of the war. Military historian Sandler ( The Emergence of the Modern Capital Ship , Univ. of Delaware Pr., 1979) portrays a two-front war--against racism at home and the enemy abroad--as he details the World War II experiences of blacks in the three fighter groups that shattered the U.S. Army Air Corps' all-white policy. He begins with the government's 1940 decision to develop "colored personnel for the aviation service" by training them in isolation outside Tuskegee, Alabama, and concludes with descriptions of combat in North Africa and southern Europe, highlighting whites' stubborn resistance and blacks' determination to succeed against the odds. This book complements Richard M. Delfiume's Desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces, 1939-1953 ( LJ 7/69) and Phillip McGuire's He, Too, Spoke for Democracy: Judge Hastie, World War II, and the Black Soldier (Greenwood, 1988). An expert recounting of the Tuskegee Airmen, the four all- black fighter squadrons that pioneered the desegregation of the US Army Air Corps. Sandler, a military historian, demonstrates how WW II, which became a crusade against racism, caused the beginning of the end of the racial polarization of American society. He tells how--even though blacks performed with distinction in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and WW I--military brass consistently undermined and failed to promote black military men. Under some pressure (the Selective Service Act provided for induction of blacks in proportion to their representation in the general population), the Army inducted blacks into its Air Corps, at first relegating them to menial noncombatant tasks like grave- registration, housecleaning, supply, and transport. With the organization of four black squadrons in July 1941, however, the combat role of blacks in aviation began. Sandler relates how black airmen had to overcome prejudice during the training and ``testing and proving'' phases of their service, and how they showed themselves the equal of white airmen in battle over North Africa and Italy. The author contends that the success of the black airmen was more than simply a matter of pride to the black community: It added impetus to the argument that blacks' fight against Jim Crow was as important as the fight against Hitler. Sandler goes on to present two contrasting stories of black air groups, which demonstrate the different ways in which the units obtained the respect of the white military establishment: The 332nd Fighter Group became an effective and important air unit, while the 477th Bombardment Group never entered combat and staged a historic nonviolent protest against discrimination. Overall, Sandler says, ``the experiences and accomplishments of the Tuskegee Airmen...ensured that there would be no more segregated skies.'' First-rate, sobering, and inspired. Not bad, very objective

This book has a hard time deciding if it is a scholarly work or a popular narrative. The style attempts to mix close analysis and an engaging storyline. These two elements are incompatible paragraph by paragraph, and bog each other down. The author changes references to major figures' titles, given names, and especially rank, back and forth without order or explanation. It smacks of rushed scholarship.

Despite these flaws, the book tells an important story. It covers a lot of old material on the Tuskeegee Airmen, but offers up some important new aspects: Evolution of Air Force policy on integration and race, and the role of Black Airmen in the Bomber forces. These two themes were largely based on original research and interviews, The general background of the Tuskeegee airmen less so.

In short, this book has some really good new material on racial politics in the US military during and just after World War II. Its coverage of the combat exploits of the all black US fighter squadrons is objective, but nothing new.

A STORY DESERVING OF WIDER RECOGNITION

This is a wonderful book which sheds much needed light on an aspect of the Second World War that has either been overlooked or marginalized for much too long -- the contributions made by African Americans who served in the United States Army Air Force (USAAF).

Herein the reader will become acquainted with the history of the 99th Pursuit Squadron, the 332nd Fighter Group, and the 477th Composite Group (which, owing to racial bias among the USAAF's leadership, never saw combat). Taken together, these units constituted the Tuskegee Airmen.

Layla is a sobbing mess!

The story line for this book series has a lot of promise and kept me interested. However, I am so sick of seeing so many weak women in book series these days. Yes, she finds her magical soul mate and is overwhelmed by all the harsh things that have happened to her, but she spends all her time either with her legs spread or with her face buried in his chest crying like a 2 year old. I find her character hard to reconcile to a girl who took care of her adoptive mother for 3 years following high school while she was in a coma. That strong independent girl, and this sobbing mess of a woman (who can't be alone more than 5 minutes without becoming hysterical) don't match up for me.
The other characters are great, with all the family members so loving and willing to do anything for Layla. Their community is great.
The sex scenes have become tedious, so I skip pages at a time, bored with the two of them. The amazing level of magic, and the imagination behind it, shows that this author shows great promise. My only issue is, instead of Anastasia constantly biting her lip, we have Layla - constantly hiding, snot flowing, while wailing uncontrollably.

Still a great story, especially for the price. Amazing scenes with great imagery.

Quin's devotion to Layla is enviable. To have the kind of love they have for each other is really magically and probably what every girl dreams of having. The story just keeps getting better and better, though it is kinda sad that there's a lot of dying and killing involved.

An emotional roller coaster ride with plenty of love and action!

Retribution, Destruction and Devastation are filled with anxiety and bloody battles. However, we see Layla evolve and witness the steamy passion that Quin and Layla share. There are plots and scenes that will break your heart. These books are an emotional roller coaster ride with plenty of love and action!
