GOOD BUY

Take it from someone who has passed the board. You only need two books Lippincott & Kaplan. I'm selling both mine. Whatever you score in the practice tests will be almost equal to what you will get on the board. Good for sizing yourself up before taking the board. I cut off at 75Q. Take my advice if you are running out of time. Study concurrently x 5hrs QD x 8 weeks. Mosby & Davis are good while your in school, but not for the exam.

This book is OLD, but usable

I didn't notice that this book was published in 1994 when I bought it. When it arrived, I obviously figured this out. The book itself looks like it will be helpful, because even though it is old, most of the information is still pertinent. The disk, however, is a different story. It is a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk and most of the information on it is not compatible with today's computers. When I saw the program that I was able to pull up, I felt like I had been warped back in time. Bottom line: If you can get a good used price on the book itself, its probably worth it. But don't plan on the disc being of much use.

About the Author
W. Bruce Allen (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is Professor of Business and Public Policy at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. For many years he was the Vice Dean and Director of the Wharton Graduate Division. He is an internationally recognized expert in transportation economics, and he specializes in demand theory and logistics. In addition to his duties at Wharton, Professor Allen teaches each summer in India and consults for numerous companies domestically and abroad. He has won a number of teaching awards, including the coveted Anvil Award, the highest teaching honor at Wharton since it is voted on by the students.

Keith Weigelt (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is the Rebecca and Morris Marks Professor of Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in business strategy, game theory, and tournaments, with articles published in the following leading journals: Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Business, and Management Science. Professor Weigelt has won numerous teaching awards, most recently the Undergraduate Division Excellence in Teaching Award and the “Tough, but I will thank you in 5 years” Award.

Neil A. Doherty (Ph.D. Cranfield Institute) is the Frederick H. Ecker Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in corporate risk management, and is the author of Integrated Risk Management (McGraw-Hill, 2000). Professor Doherty has also won numerous teaching awards.

The late Edwin Mansfield was for many years a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He was an internationally recognized expert in the economics of technology and industrial organization. His numerous texts, all published by W.W. Norton, have sold millions of copies around the world. In 1979, when Sino-American scientific agreements were finally reached, Mansfield was the first American economist to lecture in the People's Republic of China.

Too wordy, not enough depth

First I will admit to not reading the entire book, just the chapters required for a managerial economics class I was taking.

That aside this is one of the least informative books I've used in my academic or professional career. The main issues I have with the book is it is a very topical read (i.e. pointlessly wordy) with very little depth and like a lot of academic reads it really does not focus on application. (You'd think a book with Managerial in the title would focus 80% of its effort on application.)
The end result is a book that seems to make fairly simple topics sound complex and difficult while minimizing the complexity of more difficult subjects all the while not helping to improve your ability to make economic managerial decisions.

Never use this book

Truly one of the worst textbooks I have ever had to deal with. Nothing is explained clearly and the problems at the end of the chapters do not reflect the information in the chapter. They use *for lack of a better word* stupid phrases throughout the book (ex. Enough chat; let's get serious) that distract from the already bad explanations.

So, my minor is in economics, so I'm pretty well versed in econ. In grad school, Managerial Econ was one of my requirements so I thought it would be pretty easy, until I got this book. The questions, examples, and the writing - none of it makes sense to me. This is THE worst econ book I've ever seen. WORST. Hands. Down.

About the Author
Carmelo Virgillo (Ph.D , Indiana University, Bloomington) is Professor Emeritus of Romance Languages at Arizona State University, Tempe, where he taught Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian at the undergraduate and graduate levels from 1965 to 1993. In addition to serving as coordinator of Portuguese and Hispanic literature, he directed Arizona State University's programs in Florence and Siena, Italy (1982 and 1990). He was also book review editor of the Latin American Digest. His publications include Correspondência de Machado de Assis com Magalhães de Azeredo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Instituto Nacional do Livro Ministério da Educação y Cultura, 1969), Woman as Myth and Metaphor in Latin American Literature with Naomi E. Lindstrom (Columbus University of Missouri Press, 1985), and Blbliografía analítico-descritiva de Henriqueta Lisboa (Rio de Janeiro: José Olympia Editora, 1992). He also authored and co-authored numerous articles and essays on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spanish, Spanish-American, and Brazilian literature. In addition, he was a contributor to the Suplemento literário do Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil). The recipient of several nominations for excellence in teaching, he has been cited by the Italian Ministry of Education for his career-long development of and contributions to the promotion of Italian studies in the United States. He is currently researching a new book on Hispanic civilization.

Edward H. Friedman (Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University) is Chancellor’s Professor of Spanish and Professor of Comparative Literature at Vanderbilt University. His primary field of research is early modern Spanish literature, with special emphasis on picaresque narrative, the writings of Cervantes, and the Comedia. He also has worked widely in contemporary narrative and drama. His books include Cervantes in the Middle: Realism and Reality in the Spanish Novel (2006), The Unifying Concept: Approaches to the Structure of Cervantes Comedias, The Antiheroine’s Voice: Narrative Discourse and Transformations of the Picaresque, Wit’s End: An Adaptation of Lope de Vega’s La dama boba (performed by Vanderbilt University Theatre as part of its 2006-2007 season). He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fulbright Scholar Program, and the National Humanities Center. He is editor of the Bulletin of the Comediantes and has served as president of the Cervantes Society of America. Nominated by Brigham Young University, he was selected for the Sigma Delta Pi "Orden de Don Quijote" Award in 2005. The recipient of teaching awards at Arizona State University and Indiana University, he was presented the Jeffrey Nordhaus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at Vanderbilt in 2006.

L. Teresa Valdivieso (Ph.D. 1975) is Professor Emerita of Spanish at Arizona State University. In her many years at Arizona State, she has been Director of Graduate Studies, Coordinator of the Spanish Section, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies, Chair of the Arizona State University Education Abroad Committee, organizer and chair of the Undergraduate Committee, member of the Dean’s Faculty Advisory Council, and of the Language Articulation Task Force. She also was Visiting Professor at Middlebury College, Lecturer at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (Mexico) and the Universitat de Barcelona (Spain). She is the author of España: Bibliografía de un teatro silenciado, Negocios y comunicaciones, and co-author of Studia Hispanica Medievalia, La mujer hispana en el mundo: sus triunfos y sus retos, Voces y textos literarios del Ecuador, and most recently Presencia de la mujer hispana (2004), and Madrid en la literatura y las artes (2006). She is a founding-member and past president of the Asociación de Literatura Femenina Hispánica, vice-president of the Asociación Hispánica de Humanidades, senior bibliographer of the Modern Language Association, and recently elected vice-president of Spanish Professionals in America. She continues to teach at Arizona State University. In 1980 she was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for excellence in teaching; in 2002 she received the Outstanding Faculty Committee to Teaching and Learning Award, and in 2007 has been awarded the title of Honors Disciplinary Faculty.

Spanish literature made easy

Aproximaciones is a wonderful tool for the student learning about Spanish literature. The selections are well analyzed by the author and the biographies provide an overview of the cultures and perspectives of the different time periods. The chronological order of the readings makes it easy to understand the different stages of the Spanish literature and the various literary movements affecting the arts, the philosophy, and society of medieval to modern times.

This is an extremely helpful book for those who start studying literary analysis in Spanish as well as for very green literary scholars. The introduction to the special terms is easy to follow and the english equivalents are in their right places and don't distract you. Go ahead, you'll love using it in your Spanish or literary analysis class!

A must read for futures beginners

I've read many futures trading books and I think this is "the" best book for beginners. The language is easy to understand and the author explained things step by step in a very organized matter. If you ever consider learning about futures, this is the book you have to read. I still use it as reference and it's one of my favorite books.

Thank you Todd Lofton. I cannot tell you how relieved I was when I read your book. Having to learn an awful lot about futures trading for a new job fairly quickly, this book was a godsend. Great Book for Beginners; An Easy To Understand Primer

This is an excellent book that I recommend to anyone just getting started in learning about futures. The author writes in wonderful detail, and makes it easy for a person to understand the basics of the futures markets. This book is *the* place to start - it's a must read for beginners.
