This is a short analysis of the Lord's prayer.
    By A Customer
This book, by Romano Guardini, takes the Lord's prayer and analyzes it line by line, with Guardini, in his profound, deep and masterful manner explaining the true nature and meaning of this prayer, and evoking more respect, insight into its depth, and understanding of its significance. A reading of any of Guardini's books is in itself a spiritual experience, for he was a man of God and a very powerful beacon of spiritual energy and strength. He was also a master of words, and this prayer is filled with words that symbolize, on a deep deep level, the nature and workings of God in our lives. As with all of Guardini's writings, I highly recommend this - he is one writer one should not be without.

Guardini is top notch in this book!
    By Margaret A. Flipp
Read this book if you want truly deep, spiritual instruction. As usual, Romano Guardini's insights are the fruit of his years of prayer and study. What I like best is that whenever you read this book, it is like you tackled it for the first time. I used this book all during Lent and plan to use it in the future. My awareness of the depth of the Lord's Prayer has been greatly increased. If you want depth in your spiritual reading, read this book!

An inspirational reflection on the Lord's Prayer
    By Elimian
An excellent introduction to a better way of praying the beautiful prayer given by Jesus to his disciples. All too often we recite the prayer without thoughtfulness. Guardini's wise words, thoughtful insights, and inspirational reflection help Christian believers recover the deepest meaning of the prayer and guide them to offer it with heartfelt understanding and devotion.

A Varied Collection of Thoughts, Incantations, Musings from a Very Bright Mind
    By Grady Harp
Siri Hustvedt is one fine writer. Her skills go beyond the technical expertise of honing in on a thought, relishing it, dissecting it, relating it, and offering it back to the reader. Here is a writer whose depth of knowledge about literature is vast and whose spectrum of sensibilities about living and the hurdles involved is uniquely her own.

A PLEA FOR EROS is a collection of twelve essays written over the course of time from 1995 to 2004 - a bit of information that is more important than the tidbit suggests... Hustvedt reminisces about her childhood in Minnesota, her brief juncture with being a movie extra in an adaptation of Henry James' 'Washington Square' that centers on the topic of corsets (!), the personal effect of 911 on her life and beliefs, her perceptions of the differences between the sexes, and the meaning of place. She also provides some very erudite and fascinating studies of Henry James' 'The Bostonians', Charles Dickens, F. Scott Fitzgerald and other luminaries of literature, finding her attention focused not solely on the literary merits of these writers, but also on topics that bounce off her springboard of creative thinking initiated by the subjects.

For this reader Hustvedt is at her best when she explores the waters of emotion and eroticism not only in literature but also in the way our society has come to interact. 'We live in an age of religious sects and mad militias, of gurus scattered about the country form California to New York, an age of channeling, colonics, crystals, and raw food crazes.' From this stance Hustvedt takes us places to prove that we are where we come from, that our exuberance for life comes at a price yet not one too dear to make. She is enlightened, entertaining, controversial, and a spinner of pages of elegant writing that makes time spent between these two covers very special. Finding the thread that unites these twelve fascinating essays is the joy she offers. Grady Harp, February 06

readable but a bit too self-conscious for my taste
    By Cassandra
This is the second book I've read by Siri Hustvedt. The first was her novel 'What I loved', which I think shared some of the same strenghts and flaws with 'A plea for eros'.

The strenghts, as I see it, have to do with Hustvedt's elegant writing style, richness of thought, and breadth of knowledge. She very obviously is an intellectual, a woman who has been reading books and thinking about books (and art) all through her life; she also has a good understanding of human psychology, of the vicissitudes and peculiarities of sexual relationships, of the complex fabric of parenting and child-adult relations. Essays such as 'Yonder', where she explores her double (American / Norwegian) roots, or others where she explores her relationship to her mother and daughter, are nicely written, insightful, and provide food for thought.

In a way 'A plea for eros' could have been split in two parts, since the essays in it belong to two quite distinct categories- one part is Hustvedt's literature essays, the other is her essays about human relationships, sexuality, family, parenting etc. I think the latter are more appealing but also more problematic- as I said, I think they share the same strenghts and flaws with 'What I loved'.

The problem is an exhibitionism, a kind of self-consciousness which is as if Siri Hustvedt is providing us with a glimpse into her life, a life that I get the feeling we should be admiring (even though this is done in a most subtle way). A good example is her description of her first few days in New York, where she moved as a young woman from a small-town in Minnesota: 'My first few days' she says 'were spent rereading Crime and Punishment in a state that closely resembled fever'. Now is it just me or is this a pretentious phrase, which does not ring true at all? In a nutshell, there is a sense in this book, as in 'What I loved', of frequent name-dropping (mostly intellectual name dropping...which doesn't make it any less so!) and of sharing quite private moments, like her description of meeting and falling in love with her author-husband, Paul Auster. As I said, these characteristics could be considered strenghts, since Hustvedt's books end up being quite personal, direct and often very true. But they are also flaws, since her descriptions of herself and her life often become quite idealized and a bit pretentious.

"A call for Eros, a plea that we not forget ambiguity and mystery..."
    By Luan Gaines
This is honestly one of the most fascinating works I have read this year, Hustvedt's essays a fluid mix of personal recollections, comments on literature and a view of the writing life. The author's love of language is evident, as is her engagement with the world, all imbued with a passion that fills each thoughtful memoir and cultural/literary criticism: "My private geography, like most people's, excludes huge portions of the world." She views history with a compassionate eye, mining the past for the symbols and literary gems, from Henry James to Charles Dickens to F. Scott Fitzgerald, hinting that the true Eros lies in the fertile imagination, in a capacity for difference, ambiguity, tolerance and curiosity.

The collection begins with "Yonder", an autobiographical essay of the "miraculous flexibility of language" and the nature of the places we collect as memory, infused with a personal magic. The immigrant experience of the author's background exists somewhere between here and there, somewhere yonder that is never reached, much like the journey that is savored, rather than the destination. The three places that loom in the author's life are Northfield, Minnesota, New York and the Norway of her grandparents. Even here, the author digresses into the subtle terrain of language, tying elements of the personal with the reading experience, "the world of reading is a kind of yonder world."

In "A Plea for Eros", the author makes a case that familiarity and the humdrum of everyday life are the enemies of Eros, that eroticism thrives on borders and distance, a theme supported in the following essays, "Gatsby's Glasses", "Eight Days in a Corset", "Being a Man" and "Leaving Your Mother" and more. This spectacular collection includes previously unpublished work, "Charles Dickens and the Morbid Fragment" and two others that have not been published in the United States, "9/11, or One Year Later" and "Extracts from a Story of the Wounded Self". Each page is filled with thoughtful observations, all linked to literature, language and the human experience.

Each essay contains revelations, those obscure connections between reality and the world of the imagination: Creating fiction is making a place for the reader in the text, "the words accelerate the book, they don't bog it down in pointless novelistic gab" and "writing fiction is remembering what never happened" (Yonder); American feminism has perforce ignored erotic truth, a willful blindness, revealing that "seduction is inevitably a theater of barriers" (A Plea for Eros); and "The true ground of all fiction is a call to empathy, the ultimate act of the imagination" (Gatsby's Glasses).

A Plea for Eros is not only a delightful exploration of ideas but a personally rewarding experience. Hustvedt's insights are revelatory and provocative, meditations on the written word, personal experience and intellectual curiosity that are nothing less than extraordinary. In prose so rich that it bears a kind of enchantment, Hustvedt combines her own narrative with the joy of fiction, nonfiction, wit and passion, an endless chain of associations with an undeniable affection for literature. Luan Gaines/ 2005.

    Remote People, by Evelyn Waugh

Perhaps the funniest travel book ever written, Remote People begins with a vivid account of the coronation of Emperor Ras Tafari - Haile Selassie I, King of Kings - an event covered by Evelyn Waugh in 1930 as special correspondent for The Times. It continues with subsequent travels throughout Africa, where natives rub shoulders with eccentric expatriates, settlers with Arab traders and dignitaries with monks. Interspersed with these colourful tales are three 'nightmares' which describe the vexations of travel, including returning home.

Waugh travel book is essential background for the novels.
    By darragh o'donoghue
Evelyn Waugh compares his 1930 trip to Abyssinia to cover Haile Salessie's coronation to 'Alice in Wonderland', but there's something 'Brigadoon' about his whole journey to alien Africa, where intolerable heat, unreliable timetables and capricious inhabitants seem eminently preferable to the noisy social inanity back in England, so familiar to us from his classic comic novels.
Waugh divides his African travel book into two sections (one dealing with the Abyssinian trip, the other with an extended tour through Zanzibar, Kenya, Uganda, the Congo and South Africa), and three nightmares, vividly detailing the various, accumulative problems that beset the traveller, such as unhelpful officials and lousy food. Waugh is a much more sympathetic voyager than the more heroic likes of Chatwin or Raban - his whining about lack of bath water or pesky mosquitos is more refreshing than some writers' spiritual journeys.
Despite his attempts at objectivity, 'Remote people' is written, as we might expect, from a very jaundiced viewpoint. Waugh's experiences aren't really 'Alice' at all, simply a concatenation of minor mishaps, local eccentricites and cultural differences in very poor countries that only a very insulated Englishman would blow up and find surreal. Some of Waugh's ill-advised political theorising, especially his unconvincing defence of the notorious white settlers in Kenya's Happy Valley, make for distinctly ncomfortable reading, although one is grateful for Waugh's evident and lucid integrity to his own beliefs. It is surprising in a book of 1931 to see how many of the issues raised by post-colonial theory were already being painfully argued about.
Of course, we don't read Waugh for politics or sympathy to foreigners. Although written in a more descriptive, less dialogue-driven style than the novels, we find the same account of bewildered, uprooted Modern Man faced with the problems (and comedy) of the simple fact of other people (American professors absurdly reverent of Ethiopian religious practice; Seventh Day Adventists prone to seasickness; colonial magnates encouraging staff and guests to climb life-threatening volcanos etc.). The travelogue is less interesting than the rich set-pieces - the Abyssinian coronation; the bathetic trip to an ancient monastary; a rooftop cinema where the audience wilt sleepily in the sun; the efforts of native scouts to light a fire; a berserk ship journey down river with the captain trying to shoot game from his cabin, his passengers leaping off to search for any hits.

    A classic..
    By ReaderCris
This book is fantastic! It covers Waugh's journey to see the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie in the 1930s, then his long and tough trip to get back home to England afterwards.

Evelyn describes the journey vividly and tells a range of amusing travel anecdotes. The only shame is that he did not visit more of Ethiopia..

“Beginning with the premise that people fear their shadow self, this stellar lineup sets out to bring the collective shadow into the light and teach readers how to manage it until it can be dissolved.” (New Age Retailer)

    From the Back Cover

Deepak Chopra, Debbie Ford, and Marianne —New York Times bestselling authors and internationally acclaimed teachers—have joined together to share their knowledge on one of the most crucial obstacles to happiness we face—the shadow. These three luminaries, each with a signature approach, bring to light the parts of ourselves we deny but that still direct our life. For it is only when we embrace our shadow that we discover the gifts of our authentic nature.

The shadow exists within all of us. It is a part of us and yet we spend most of our life running from it. But far from being scary, our dark side holds the promise of a better, more fulfilling life. Our shadow makes itself known every day. It is the reason we get furious over a friend showing up ten minutes late, yell at our parents or kids when they have done nothing wrong, and sabotage our own success at the worst possible time. Until we are able to embrace our dualistic nature, we will continue to hurt ourselves and those closest to us and fall short of our potential.

Combining the wisdom of three experts, The Shadow Effect is a practical and profound guide to discovering the gifts of our shadow. These three authors powerfully pierce the veil of our unclaimed self, releasing us from the past and propelling us on a journey to wholeness. No longer living a half life, we are capable of achieving our dreams and reclaiming the happiness that is our birthright.

    Not to be missed
    By P. Hasegawa
A powerful and profound film that documents how our personal and collective shadows influence our lives. Intense and thought provoking, I felt this film explores our world through the len of the shadow and leaves us looking at the roots of our world's problems. It offers hope in showing us the power we have access to if we are willing to deal with our shadow self. If you are interested in moving foward in your spiritual life and shifting consciousness, I highly recommend seeing this film. It is a must for anyone wanting to undestand the struggle they feel inside themselves between their greatness and feeling completely unworthy and undeserving of love and good things.

    Both challenging and enlightening...
    By WhollyMan
This book featuring Debbie Ford, Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson evolved out of the movie The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self that recently brought the three of them together. While the movie serves as an introduction to the concepts of the shadow and how it limits us as human beings, The Shadow Effect book is a deep exploration of that which most of us have hidden and tried to contain within ourselves. Of the three authors, Ford contributes the most clarity and definition to what the shadow is and how it shows up in our lives. But all share equally valuable information and insightes from their unique perspectives, offering a depth of experience and wisdom on this most vital of topics. Reading this book is both challenging and enlightening. It can be depressing as we learn the truth of who we are, yet hopeful as we discover the power that the comes from healing and integrating the Shadow. This is a must read for anyone committed to supporting a shift in consciousness on the planet.

The Shadow Effect- a must see movie
    By Amazon Customer
This is the best movie of its genre I have seen. It speaks to a topic that is so appropriate to the times we are in and covers it straight forward, to the point. What makes this movie stand out even further from other "transformational" movies, is that it offers clear and concise real life examples and provides the viewer with tools and ways to apply the principles in their life and their world.

The quest for the Holy Grail in Forex is a metaphorical journey in financial analysis applied to the currencies’ market. Much like the Templar knights sought the Holy Grail over the centuries, the author guides the trader along dark path, in a quest for the golden rules that underpin profit in the currency trading. Some of the main tools in classic financial analysis are here analyzed in depth, clarifying which of them actually work in the current markets, and reaching the conclusion that common technical indicators alone are not enough to take a trader to the Holy Grail of financial success. To help the reader develop a firm grasp on currency trading analyses and be consistently profitable over time, the author will explore how to understand the moves of the big players and how to follow them. The author suggests 15 golden rules that can be used as a guide in the arduous search for the Holy Grail in forex. A new approach to the financial analysis. A quest for truths hidden to most; a different approach to the classic technical analysis. Reading and mastering the contents of this book, a knowledgeable trader will learn not to rely on now obsolete technical analysis indicators or to lean on the advice of the most diverse experts, but to adopt a holistic approach, and become able to assess what really moves the markets, how the balance of powers between the currencies works and fluctuates at any given moment. Ad Maiora.

    By GABRIELE
I have found this book quite original, since it debunks a series of false myths, derived by the classic technical analysis. I liked the section dedicated to the c.o.t. report, since it allows to understand how the large traders are positioned. This book is different from the other books and I love the idea to use the Holy Grail's metaphora. It seems to be a revolutionary book, not a common copy and paste, like many other books which I have read in the past. Defenetly, it worth the money spent for it. Not an average book, but a masterpiece.

Other Powers - The Age Of Suffrage, Spiritualism, And The Scandalous Victoria Woodhull, by Barbara Goldsmith

What an absolute joy of a book. Goldsmith seems to have found the perfect center of the feminist storm in Victoria Woodhull, an outspoken advocate of women's rights, free love, and spiritualism. The telling of her tale (and this book reads like a plotted novel) involves the inclusion of tales and talk from Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Henry Ward Beecher, President Ulysses S. Grant, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, and cameo appearances from a host of others (including the prudish New York City "in"fighter, Anthony Comstock). Much of the telling involves the infamous Tilton-Beecher scandal, a story whose recitation touches on much of the post-Civil War atmosphere of spiritualism, financial skullduggery, the new religious practices of revised Calvinism, and, of course, equal rights for women. This is a fascinating read and wonderfully written. You don't need to be a history buff to pick this up.

A Treasure Chest of Fascinating, Little-Known History
    By Stan Vernooy
Goldsmith has done a real service with this book. It is more or less the history of the 19th-century women's suffrage movement, with special emphasis on the influence of Spiritualism and on the life of Victoria Woodhull (of whom I had never before heard, even though I regard myself as fairly well-versed in American history).
The book is full of fascinating characters and events, most of which are given unconscionably short shrift in our educational system. Goldsmith fleshes out the stories and personalities of many people who were previously just vague images in my mind, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Henry Ward Beecher. It seems from this book that female suffrage could have occurred as much as 50 years earlier than it did, if it hadn't been for a couple of missteps on the part of the supporters of suffrage. For one thing, there was a bitter division among the suffragettes about whether the female right to vote should be part of the movement for enfranchising the recently freed slaves. Sadly, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, despite her many wonderful and even heroic contributions to the movement, comes across as an out-and-out racist on this issue, and probably damaged the very cause to which she devoted her life. Secondly, some of the foremost spokespeople for female suffrage got caught up in unrelated, controversial issues, and even in personal sexual scandals.
If you have an interest in American history, you may very well have the same reaction I did while reading this book. Almost every other page, I found myself exclaiming, "Hey, I didn't know that! How come that's not in any of the history books?"
The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is that I think the organization and focus could be a little better. The book isn't organized strictly chronologically, and it jumps from one character to another without apparent reason.
But there's just too much really good stuff here to give anything less than four stars, and I have no quarrel with those who have given it five. You won't often pick up a book written for a general audience and learn so many interesting facts that you probably didn't know.

    Exciting, disturbing, well-presented history/biography!
    By Rachel E. Pollock
This book is huge at 560 pgs; of course, i guess that's nothing compared to these past couple Harry Potters so perhaps i should just say, "substantial." It covers literally Woodhull's entire life (and a good deal of her sister's, Tennessee Claflin), as well as offering am in-depth view of the political and social climate at the time. It devotes a particular amount of time to the changing nuances of her "free love" doctrine and other participants in that movement (one which was, most certainly, ahead of its time--we don't generally think of Victorian times and Free Love in the same boat these days), and the Beecher-Tilton adultery trial.
I found the book to be facinating from a suffrage-history POV, contrasting events depicted/documented within with my memories of the "women's movement" from history classes. Goldsmith isn't afraid to throw stones (mostly by quoting their own less than tolerant words) at suffrage icons Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony, and others, in the course of depicting an unbiased view of the debate that raged for both women's and black men's suffrage at the time. She is both sympathetic to Victoria and Tennessee (she does a very good job in depicting the bizarre, abusive, nomadic carnival-like nature of their childhoods and family life while growing up), and willing to point out their flaws and transgressions (both women engaged in prostitution, blackmail, and other acts of "questionable ethics").
There's not as much focus on the Spiritualism movement, though the overview is thorough and the author depicts in great detail the ways in which Victoria and Tennessee were involved in it as trance speakers and predictors of the future, both from a very young age. She presents the oracles and visions and claims of spiritualists without passing judgement on them, though it's hard not to do so onesself as a modern skeptic reader--the descriptions of Victoria's frequent "possession" by spirit guides, particularly when speaking in public and in other stressful situations, coupled with her traumatic childhood, are reminiscent of depictions of modern dissociative identity disorders.
To read the book as a modern woman is somewhat horrific; one can't help but think along the lines of "what would I have done back then," when Anthony Comstock was arresting people for even discussing contraception and women were considered the property of their husbands. Goldsmith investigates a lot of related issues, giving brief synopses of cases of abortionists, midwives, spinsters-by-choice, servant-class mothers of illegitimate children who were imprisoned for "infanticide" when their babies died in childbirth...ugh. Horrible reading, but important.
All in all a facinating overview of activism, alternative spirituality, and the tumultuous political climate of post-civil-war America, centered around the life story of the country's first female Presidential candidate.

    From Library Journal
This volume, the fifth in a series that also covers Locke, Hegel, Rousseau, and Descartes, differs somewhat from its more straighforward predecessors in content. After an introductory essay entitled "Kant and the 'Age of Criticism,'" which provides background on Kant's intellectual and writing history, Caygill (coeditor, The Fate of the New Nietzsche, Ashgate, 1993) launches into a dictionary proper. But this is not a dictionary of terms in the conventional sense; the entries are not simply definitions but are more like mini-encyclopedia entries in that they provide analysis and link the terms to other relevant terms in Kant's works. In preparing the dictionary entries this way, Caygill offers a far more useful tool to readers of Kant than the standard dictionary. The bibliographies provide a chronological list of Kant's published writings, a bibliography of works referred to in the dictionary itself, and a list of recommended further readings. One interesting addition is an index that ties the names of philosophers to the dictionary entries in which they appear. This volume deserves a place in all libraries with holdings on philosophy, as do the other volumes in the series.?Terry Skeats, Bishop's Univ. Lib., Lennoxville, Quebec

" Howard Caygill is a find Kant scholar and a superb reader of the history of philosophy, which makes him well-qualified to carry out the unenviable task of constructing a Kant Lexicon. What he has come up with is an immensely readable and instructive text, written with great lucidity and acumen, and executed with a clear sense of purpose and commitment." Solid and Quite helpful Dictionary on Kant's Philosophy
    By T. B. Vick
From A to Z, here is a dictionary on Kant's philosophy which, surprisingly enough, is quite helpful. For someone who is trying to gain a better understanding of Kant's philosophy this text is an invaluable tool to have handy. It is easy to use (since it is an A to Z topical dictionary) and contains a few extra features such as an Introduction on Kant and the Language of Philosophy, an article on Kant and the 'Age of Criticism,' a very handy chronology of Kant's published writings, a section called "Works Referred to in the Text" which sites all the works used to put this dictionary together, a recommended reading list (quite nice feature), and an index of philosophers and philosophical concepts.
Thus, for a text dealing with Kant, the reader gets not only great information on Kant's philosophy, but on his actual works, his concepts, his time period, and information on those philosophers who preceded and followed him.
What is more, a student can use this text to branch out into deeper study on Kant's philosophy due to the recommended reading, but also by way of the text itself. What I mean is, the entries include cross references, text abbreviations where the information (or concept) can be found in Kant's work, and the German origin of the entry/word/concept itself.
Overall, this is a very nice edition to anyone's philosophical library. Moreover, it is one of the better reference works I have seen or used in my research of Immanuel Kant. I highly recommend this text.

    well worth the purchase

whether it's your first experience with kant, or you're revisiting him upon reading an essay about him: this book is very useful. it highlights kant's vocabulary in alphabetical order with a little definition of each word. BUT,more importantly, it has references to WHERE the word gets used. and the dictionary spans his entire career. so, it's an excellent reference.

the binding is a bit stiff.
    but, still, really useful.

    for the ordinary person
    By cvairag
I forget the exact words and who said them, but a more recent philosopher once observed that Kant wrote for the 'salvation of the ordinary man, in words that the ordinary man could not possibly understand'. This problem, compounded by the even more abstruse interpretations of Kantian terminology offered by contemporary analytic philosophers, exacerbates the notorious difficulties in following the meaning of the terminology employed by Kant in his arguments in the way that: 1) Kant intended them to be understood, and 2) allows one to meaningfully participate in contemporary discourse surrounding this essential work. Kant is a thinker, like Spinoza before him, whom one must come to terms with. Yet, to understand the terms he uses, one must have a quick, dictionary reference, ready to hand - immediate access to definitions of the terms as one reads. This need is met here. While excellent works like the widely acclaimed CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO KANT are wonderful aids in helping us understand these seminal and challenging texts, they are not ordered in the reference style format which is needed when reading Kant.
Caygill's excellent ancillary work, written in clear, unencumbered prose, is worthy of the highest approbation. I ask the prospective reader: Where else are you going to find explanations of all the terminology in Kant, and all the abbreviations used in the critical literature, critically juried by some of the top Kant scholars in the world, arranged in alphabetical order, all in one well-ordered, easily accessed volume?
Ironically, as Caygill informs us, in the entry for "definition", that, decribing definition as the presentation of the "...the complete, original concept of a thing within the limits of its concept", Kant "...goes to some length to show that, strictly speaking, there can be no philosophical definitions. Empirical concepts cannot be defined because it is impossible to know their precise limits, nor is it possible to be certain that they are original. They may be explicated by making their contents explicit, but they do not fulfill the criteria of definition. Nor do a priori concepts, since it is impossible to be certain that analysis has been completely effected: "the completeness of the analysis of my concept is always in doubt , and a multiplicity of suitable examples suffices only to make the completeness probable, never to make it apodeictically certain". (CPR A 729/ B 757)
Albeit, Caygill does well enough to warrant that there is no one approaching Kant's texts, regardless of their level of expertise (and most of us have relatively little, who would not be privileged to have this comprehensive reference ready-to-hand.
