Rizzoli's publications are hit or miss. This one looks like it was rushed. I am a huge fan of this brand - for years. I wanted to be captivated and completely transformed. I wanted to uncover things I was previously unaware of. This was not the case. Its fair at best.

Not what I thought I was getting

From the "Rizzoli" website introducing the book and detailing. " In the spirit of Margiela's garments, the book is a work of art in itself, designed exclusively by Margiela and complete with silver inks, ribbon markers, a variety of lush paper types, twelve booklets, and an embroidered white-linen cover. This book provides a window onto the intimate, handmade world of a unique designer." I did not get the white linen cover and or the book with any ribbon markers. Was a bit disappointed, it may be petty but just a big fan and love every nuance I can get from his Maison.

addictive escapism

MMM has been under intense scrutiny for the past few seasons due to the exit of their innovative torch carrier Margiela himself. So in a way I felt this book was a bit of an epitaph archiving the last 20 years of the brand. True to MMM style, it's abstract and beautiful (i may just need another copy to have several of the images framed.) It's complete sensory overload. I've been waiting months to receive this book, so I'm not sure if it could have ever lived up to my ridiculous expectations. I for one, find this kind of design as pure fashion escapism. That being said it's wonderful in size and content. The book is a bit traditional as far as modern printing techniques are concerned and I was secretly hoping the design would have been a bit more Margielian. Not that this book needed any additional trickery, the imagery is quite cerebral, sure to take you on an extremely intimate fashion odyssey. A must have for any devotee of the brand and sure to bring endless inspiration from your wardrobe to a global perspective on the very basic ideals of fashion. VIVA LA MARGIELA!

Scam Artist

I can give you a summary of the book aka the real story of how this company was created.

Darren wants to start an insurance agency. So he applies for a business license and employs immigrants seeking work visas. The immigrants know that their work visa is contingent upon their employment and they are willing to do whatever it takes to stay in the country, as long as it is not illegal. Darren instructs the immigrants to tell every new employee that they hire that they are making close to a six figure incomes in three years, and that this was accomplished by following Darren's business model and sales script. Since lying to college students is not illegal, the immigrants go along with it. Next Darren holds group hiring sessions to quickly recruit recent college graduates. These college graduates are instructed to cold call 8 hours a day to prospect small businesses that want to switch insurance agents. Any appointments booked by the recent college grads are attended by Darren or one of the immigrants. During the appointment, they will tell you that they can save you 22% on your insurance premiums by switching brokers. What they really mean is that they'll downgrade your plan so you receive less benefits and pay lower premiums. It's nothing ground breaking, but when you have dozens of college students cold calling local businesses 8 hours a day, you eventually find some people who are willing to switch brokers. It's a number game.

Many college grads stick around for months, sometimes even years before finally realizing that Darren never had any intent on sharing the full commission that he promised. He only shares commission with the immigrants so that they can uphold the image of success and one or two females that he befriends. Eventually the college grads realize that this is a sham, they inevitable search for new work and Darren keeps the accounts and commission to himself. Repeat this cycle after almost a decade and now Darren is rich because literally hundreds, possibly up to a thousand college graduates, have worked for months at a time making cold calls to prospect small businesses, only to leave those accounts behind.

If you view the contact page on each website, they all have the same address in Irvine, CA. He's trying to create the illusion of success and wealth.

While this guy might not be breaking any laws, he is as shady as they come. He'll tell say things like, "there's enough businesses in a 10 miles radius to support all the new brokers", "if you stick with his program for three years, you'll make it too, but it's a tough job and not everyone is cut out to work on commission because some people just don't have what it takes". He's basically using reverse psychology on you to get you to think you need to work hard for free if you want to make it and if you don't, it's your own damn fault.

The truth is, there is no merit system in which the employees are promoted to ever receive commission. You only believe it is possible to achieve a reasonable income through this system because the immigrants parrot this lie to you. In truth, Darren just gives out just enough commission to sustain the illusion and keeps the rest for himself. As a real agent, you can get signed up by any health care provider on your own and collect 100% of the commission yourself from day one. As a new agent, you sometimes split commission and earn a draw during the training process. At APEX - you work for free and sign all your accounts under Darren's name.

He's been pulling the same trick on college students for almost a decade now. His ploy has probably evolved over time, but here's the real story behind Apex. The fact that he's even written a book to white wash his history is actually a smart move but it's also rather disgusting at the same time.

If Amazon continues to sell this book, I hope they re-categorize this to the appropriate section - "Fiction".

Inspiring ... far more compelling than I expected

This is one of the few books in recent memory that I actually enjoyed reading. I generally have pretty low expectations for books of this genre, but the combination of insightful advice and real world applicability gave this book a certain legitimacy and usefulness I've found similar titles lacking.

I've already put several of the strategies in this book into practice in my own life, and have been pleasantly surprised by the results. To be fair, I have a background in insurance that makes this book especially relevant for me, but this text has so much useful information that anyone who wants to build a better company or even just learn more about what it takes to be successful will get a lot out of this book.

Amazing Legacy in Action

This book embarked the beginning of a legacy being built by Darren Sugiyama and his team. Purchased in bulk by a multi-billion dollar company, I've had the pleasure of not only reading, but actually experiencing the training behind the story with the author himself. While my agency operates in a different fashion (as many do)the lesson has been engrained and our sales have continued to rise steadily year over year. I highly encourage to start with this read, then move to the next chapter, The Icon Effect.

As late as the 1970s, among the Tzutujil Indians of Santiago Atitlan, in Guatemala, there was no word for "time," and the concept closest to the verb "to be" was the state of "belonging to"?in this case, to their village, which these descendants of ancient Mayans believed was the center of the universe. At the core of their philosophy was a rejection of progress?everything of importance had happened in the past. Their religion, which relied on communion with animal and plant spirits to understand daily existence, appealed deeply to Prechtel, a half Native American who grew up on a Pueblo reservation near Santa Fe: "The new aromas, the new sounds, things that I'd never seen before, spun me into a trance, amplifying my already well-established erotic relationship with the landscape, my verdant quest to find a way to merge and mate with the spirit of the world." In his engaging first book, Prechtel describes his apprenticeship to Nicolas Chiviliu Tacaxoy, a shaman who taught him healing and divination skills, and his 13 years living as a Tzutujil. While his view seems at times romanticized, the picture he creates of idyllic Indian life?of the Indians' well-being, colorful rituals and rapport with nature?is so beautifully drawn that his delight in their culture becomes contagious, as does his grief when civil war creates havoc in their village.

Brings the Reader deep within the village truths

An amazing book, filled with insights and deeply wise. I particularly appreciated the honesty that allowed us to grow in understanding through following Prechtel's errors and misunderstandings... a deeply moving memoir. Strongly recommended for anthropologists and shamanic practitioners alike - there are learnings for all.

one of the best books I've ever read

Anyone with an interest in indigenous people as well as a lust for fascinating accounts of wayward travellers will find this impossible to put down. Humorous, yet poetic at times, the writer has a gift to share, and he does so with incredible dexterity. The insights into how the Maya lived within nature, their social heirarchy, inside jokes, love of life, and slow victimization by 20th (and 21st) century power-mongers make this account a valuable resource for all human beings.
Interestingly, the Mayan calendar, put forth centuries ago, ends within this decade, fodder for Armegeddon-theorists in the last half century. Prechtel's book helps to explain how this happened before his eyes and the role he has come to play in keeping the soul of the Maya alive.

This should be a must-read for anthropologists, linguists, spiritualists, environmentalists, economists, missionaries of all faiths, travellers, and policy makers. And yet with such a broad base, it remains a fascinating narrative as well. This was unquestionably one of the best books I have ever read.

According to the first volume of the Reports of the Boston Record Commissioners, published in 1898, deficiencies in Boston's official records may reflect a shortfall of recorded 18th-century births and deaths of as much as seventy-five percent. Based upon a nineteenth-century manuscript on deposit in the Boston City Hall entitled "New North Church Boston, A Genealogical Register . . . compiled by Thomas Bellows Wyman, containing records of Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths, 1714-1799," the work at hand goes a considerable way towards rectifying this problem inasmuch as it makes available to the genealogist thousands of records of baptism, marriage, and death, as well as records of admission and covenanter (?) from a heretofore unpublished source. It should be pointed out that the actual New North Church records upon which Wyman's transcription was based are no longer extant!

The resurrection of the Wyman's New North Church manuscript is the handiwork of Robert J. Dunkle, who transcribed the original, and Ann S. Lainhart, who edited the transcription and compared it against the city's published official records for the period 1700-1809. Dunkle and Lainhart have arranged the church's vital records alphabetically by surname and thereunder by record category--admission and covenanter, and then baptism, marriage, and death. The baptisms yield the names of the infant and parents and the date of baptism; the marriages, the names of the bride and groom and the date of the marriage; and the deaths (which are vastly in the minority), the name of the deceased, his/her age at death, and the date. In all, this new work rescues from obscurity the identities of more than 10,000 18th-century Bostonians.

Great text and notes

It is great to see the 2nd and 4th Catiline being presented with notes and commentary. This is not only helpful for students, but for instructors in having items highlighted via the notes to focus on in aiding students toward better understanding at a glance without the need to keep looking things up. The notes are also useful in helping to create worksheets and identify constructions for students to parse and translate.
If one is a student or self taught, this is an excellent text for making clear what seems difficult or not covered by the numerous artificial sentences of texts like Moreland and Flescher's Latin an Intensive Course or Wheelock's practice and review. The vocabulary in the back is quite complete as far as what an intermediate student might not have encountered yet or forgotten from earlier work.The only hangup is that the notes are in the back which requires a finger or book mark in two places, but it is a minor issue. Otherwise a very useful text both for understanding Cicero and for becoming familiar with Ciceronian constructions that appear in other more difficult works.

A great resource

This is a welcome tool for the teacher and student of Latin. I recently studied Cicero's Pro Archia and In Catalinam I for a class, and I wanted to read the other three over break. Shapiro's volume has been paydirt. Her historical essays are excellent - they would be quite appropriate to use in any classics or history course, besides being great background to the text itself.

The Latin is presented by itself, with no grammar or vocabulary on the same page. The commentary comes at the end and there is a full glossary in the back. The commentary is primarily focused on syntax (how do chunks of words fit together) and also gives historical and cultural information where relevant (very helpful). The commentary glosses a few words occasionally, but far less than some will be accustomed to.

I wasn't sure I liked not having on-page commentary and/or vocabulary at first (why not have at least difficult vocabulary glossed on the page to eliminate always flipping to the back?), but I have ended up liking it. Why? Because it absolutely forces the reader to stick in the Latin text. Over the long run, I found myself pausing longer to ponder Cicero's sometimes wandering (aka periodic) sentences before flipping to the back for assistance, or thinking twice about vocabulary I was uncertain of and trying to guess based on the etymology or context. This guesswork, combined with the ability to look it up either in the commentary or full vocabulary, ultimately makes one a better reader of Latin.

I can heartily recommend this volume to anyone desiring an intermediate level text. It would be quite effective in either a classroom setting or independently.

Great latin translation book. It not only has essays to put Cicero's speeches in context, but it also has a well thought out vocab section. The latin is clear and easy to read, as well as one of the (at least in my mind) most accurate transcriptions of Cicero's speeches.
