From the Back Cover

To the uninitiated, riding an off-road motorcycle may look as easy as sitting down, putting your feet on the pegs, and twisting the throttle. But for anyone who has ever tried to tackle an off-road trail or even a gravel road on a dirt bike, they know that there is so much more skill involved than meets the eye. At any given moment, both hands and both feet are busy working the clutch, brakes, and transmission. At the same time, the rider is transferring his weight just so, all while applying a precise amount of throttle to keep the bike upright and moving. In other words, it’s not as easy as it looks! Learning to ride a dirt bike with no guidance is not only risky and time-consuming, but prevents you from reaching your full potential. In How to Ride Off-Road Motorcycles, author Gary LaPlante takes his many years as a dirt bike riding instructor and lays out a proven step-by-step practice guide for any rider interested in heading off-road or sharpening his bike-handling skills. He begins with the basics of shifting, stopping, and turning, and moves on to more advanced techniques such as hill climbing, wheelies, jumping, and power slides. How to handle specific trail obstacles such as rocks, ruts, and water crossings is also detailed in the colorful how-to photo sequences found throughout the book. Gary also gives sound advice on how to choose the bike that’s right for you and how to maintain it for optimum performance; how to deal with the weather, altitude, and trail conditions found throughout the country; off-road etiquette; and racing techniques for motocross and trials competitions. Additionally, he makes it clear how street riders’ on-road skills are improved by understanding how to handle a bike off road. Following the steps in How to Ride an Off-Road Motorcycle is the best investment you can make to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding dirt bike experience.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
By BENTON A.
This is the quintessential book for riding dirt bikes. Gary's methods teach riders the core skills (many of which are counterintuitive) that translate into advanced techniques with practice. I started riding in my thirties, and as an occasional weekender have always felt a few steps behind in my understanding. This book breaks down all aspects of riding and, with practice, opens up all the mysteries that lead to more confidence and ultimately, smoother, faster more confident riding. My 11 yr old son and I have read through this book several times AND taken classes at the Washington State franchise of Motoventures, and had a blast. We will continue to use this curriculum and take more classes.

Great for beginners not novice or expert.

I was expecting more advanced techniques and information that would be helpful for an advanced rider. Unfortunately most of this book was written for neophytes and people who had barely ever seen a motorcycle before. That's not to say that there weren't helpful tidbits for experienced riders but not enough there to justify the price of the book when compared to other choices like The Art of Trail Riding by Paul clipper.

If you are new to motorcycling buy this book if you are an advanced rider buy Paul Clipper's book.

From the Reviews of Nonlinear Regression

"A very good book and an important one in that it is likely to become a standard reference for all interested in nonlinear regression; and I would imagine that any statistician concerned with nonlinear regression would want a copy on his shelves."
–The Statistician

"Nonlinear Regression also includes a reference list of over 700 entries. The compilation of this material and cross-referencing of it is one of the most valuable aspects of the book. Nonlinear Regression can provide the researcher unfamiliar with a particular specialty area of nonlinear regression an introduction to that area of nonlinear regression and access to the appropriate references . . . Nonlinear Regression provides by far the broadest discussion of nonlinear regression models currently available and will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone interested in understanding and using such models including the statistical researcher."

one of three excellent books on nonlinear regression
By Michael R. Chernick
In 2001 I reviewed for amazon the texts by Gallant and the one by Bates and Watts. This text was written by Seber and Wild, two accomplished statisticians and experienced authors. This volume is of the same high caliber as those texts and deserves mention. It is a longer text that overlaps on many topics with the other two books, deliberately neglects some areas that were well covered by Gallant (Gallant's book came out in 1987 and this one in 1989) and hits some topics not covered by either of the other two books.
Bootstrap methods are neglected probably because the value of the bootstrap for standard error estimation in nonlinear models was not yet appreciated in 1989.

Chapters 1 and 2 provide good introductory material similar to the other texts. Chapter 1 deals with the models (linear and nonlinear) and Chapter 2 provides the basic estimation techniques. In addition to the standard material on least squares, generalized least squares and maximum likelihood, the authors also cover quasi-likelihood, linear approximations, robust estimation and Bayesian methods. Box - Cox transformations and the issue of variance heterogeneity are also treated in Chapter 2.

As they remark in the preface, they avoid much of the econometric theory and asymptotic theory that is well covered in Gallant's book.

Chapter 3 deals with important practical issues including the convergence properties of the iterative procedures (important for nonlinear models but a non-issue in linear models), ill-conditioning and identifiability (important issues for both linear and nonlinear models).

Chapter 4 deals with curvature issues and covers much of the original work of Bates and Watts with many references to those authors. Oddly though, there is no mention of the Bates and Watts text. Both books were published by Wiley around the same time with Bates and Watts appearing in 1988 and Seber and Wild in 1989. Perhaps the Seber and Wild book went to the publisher before the Bates and Watts book came out (their preface has a May 1988 date).

Important and interesting topics covered in this book but not the others include models with time dependent errors, detailed treatment of growth models, compartmental models, multiphase and spline regresions and error-in-variables models. They also devote a whole chapter to software issues (very interesting and practical but probably mostly outdated).

Good for a graduate statistics course or for a research reference source. Has lots of material and references but lacks homework problems.

Good Text: Rigorous and Theoretical but Clear
By Marco Respini
I am a Chemist Phd working in the oil refining industry and often use statistical tools to model plant process and laboratory data. this text is not for practical uses but is to be considered a very rigorous and in depht introduction to nonlinear regression theory. Even if quite long and detailed is still clear and not difficult to understand. if you have time to devote to the principles and not jump to solutions this is a very good advanced text

It is a bible of nonlinear regression book
By C. Tu
This is a very good book for people who would like to learn nonlinear regression in deep. Comparing with Bates and Watts book, this book provides very clear nonlinear regression theories. For all statisticians who focus on nonlinear regression, they must have this book.

Review
“Far too many assume that Janet Mock's story is primarily about her body. This book is irrefutable evidence that Janet must be understood through her intellect, spirit, and wit. Janet does what only great writers of autobiography accomplish—she tells a story of the self, which turns out to be a reflection of all humanity. You will be changed by this book.” (Melissa Harris-Perry, Wake Forest University Professor and host of MSNBC's "Melissa Harris-Perry")

“Janet Mock is a glamorous, smarty-pants writer and activist…. Her book about her life as a transwoman, Redefining Realness, isn’t just a service to the trans community but to every woman – hell, person – who has struggled with identity.” (Lena Dunham, actress and author of Not That Kind of Girl)

“Courageous! Told with a spirit of raw honesty that moves beyond confession to redemptive revelation, this book is a life map for transformation—for changing minds. A heart-rending autobiography of love, longing, and fulfillment.” (bell hooks, feminist, social activist, and author of All About Love)

“Redefining Realness is a classic American autobiography. Like Richard Wright and Maya Angelou, Janet Mock brings us into a world we may not know and with breathtaking insight, courage, and masterful craft makes her story universal.” (Barbara Smith, author of the Truth That Never Hurts: Writings on Race, Gender, and Freedom, co-founder of Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press)

"Janet Mock’s groundbreaking book is testimony to the remarkable progress trans people have achieved over the last decade-- and shines a bright light on the work that still needs to be done. Mock’s clear, lucid prose will open hearts and minds, and further the goals of equality and justice--not just for trans people, but for everyone. Redefining Realness is loving, searing, and true." (Jennifer Finney Boylan, author of She’s Not There and Stuck in the Middle With You)

“Redefining Realness is a riveting, emotional, crisply written testimony. I couldn't put it down. I aspire to be as unflinchingly brave! Janet Mock's story simultaneously embodies, complicates, and subverts the concept of American exceptionalism and self-creation.” (Laverne Cox, actress, advocate, and star of Orange Is the New Black)

“Defining oneself is a revolutionary act, and, as described in her memoir, Janet Mock fiercely fought to free herself with exquisite bravery and sensitivity. Redefining Realness is full of hope, dreams, and determination. It is a true American girl story.” (Michaela angela Davis, Image Activist/Writer/CNN Contributor)

“Every Cinderella story has its problematic step-parents to maneuver around, and its metaphorical fireplaces to clean, before the heroine is whisked off to the ball. Janet Mock’s is no exception. But the real magic here is not of the fairy-tale kind. Redefining Realness overflows with the everyday magic of survival and resiliency in low income communities of color, of loving kindness bursting through the cracks of a hard reality, and of the life-sustaining bonds of family, friendships, and a powerful trans sisterhood.” (Susan Stryker, author of Transgender History and Associate Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies and Director of the Institute for LGBT, University of Arizona)

"Janet Mock's honest and sometimes searing journey is a rare and important look into la vida liminal, one that she manages to negotiate remarkably well, with grace, humor, and fierce grit. Mock doesn't only redefine what realness means to her, but challenges us to rethink our own perceptions of gender and sexuality, feminism and sisterhood, making this book a transcendent piece of American literature." (Raquel Cepeda, author of Bird of Paradise: How I Became Latina)

“An eye-opening and unapologetic story that is much greater than mere disclosure.... An enlightening, much-needed perspective on transgender identity.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Mock defies the historically apolitical confines of the transgender memoir, and draws bright lines connecting her experiences to the larger realm of social justice, with a keen political eye that uses her individual experience to elucidate the wider condition of trans women of color in the U.S. Her vivid prose arouses every sense.... Although the book is ostensibly one woman’s coming-of-age story, Mock fulfills grander purposes here; in coming to terms with her own difficult journey she also uses that experience didactically, as if to take the uninitiated, non-transgender reader with her, most certainly achieving 'realness.'” (Publishers Weekly)

“...intelligent and educational…. Recommended for lovers of memoirs and for readers with sincere interest in the subject matter.” (Library Journal)

“A classic feminist coming-of-age story that’s worthy of your mantel. . . . Her memoir recounts a life that is both hardscrabble and hard-fought, making for a must-read book that is at turns riveting and wonderfully emotionally nuanced.” (The Advocate)

“Pardon the hyperbole, but Janet Mock may be the best person ever. . . . A beautiful, powerful memoir.” (Rookie)

“A fiery success.” (The Atlantic)

“The beauty of Mock’s memoir is that it is both personal and universal; her story is her own, but it also transcends the specificity of her life narrative to touch all of us.” (Lambda Literary)

“Redefining Realness is a rare autobiography in that it reads less like a memoir and more like a conversation with a homegirl. . . . [It] made me feel like I was on my couch with a friend sharing secrets rather than reading a carefully constructed narrative. That, I think, is a gift.” (Crunk Feminist Collective)

“Mock’s grace in handling complexity is matched by her frankness, and she talks race, class, and intersectional politics without ever sounding polemical.” (The Rumpus)

“Mock’s compelling memoir entrancingly chronicles the story of a multiracial trans woman’s becoming within a society that is still widely antagonistic to the non-White, non-male, transgender, and economically challenged among us. . . . Mock has written herself into herstory. And she has done so with clarity and poetic brilliance.” (The Feminist Wire)

“Janet Mock shares that which society tells us to keep secret . . . and uses it not only to strengthen herself, and empower other girls but also to educate.” (For Books' Sake)

“Here’s the short version of my review: go buy it and read it now. . . . Mock brings the same bravery and fierce determination that is evident in her history to the writing of the book, claiming her own story and making sure experiences that have often been used to dehumanize trans women and reduce us to our transition status instead serve to give the reader a more full and honest glimpse of her humanity.” (Feministing)

“Redefining Realness details a truly American story. Its poor heroine winning independence, success, and love through intelligence, determination, and hard work makes it timeless. Its portrait of a society grappling with issues of fragmented families, race, drug addiction, abuse, sex work, poverty, sexual orientation, and gender identity make it more timely and relevant than anyone expecting a ‘transgender memoir’ could possibly predict.” (The Daily Dot)

“A memoir that takes the coming-of-age narrative to both a higher and deeper level.” (Slate)

“It's fully intersectional, deliciously activist, wonderfully unapologetic, brazen, and beautiful. I love Mock's book because, like the best feminist reads, it’s really about the insight that telling stories can be a revolutionary act.” (Laura Ciolkowski, Associate Director of the Center for the Study of Social Difference and Adjunct Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University)

Author’s Note

This book is my truth and personal history. I have recalled facts, from events to people, to the best of my ability. When memory failed me, I did not seek answers in imagination. I sought clarity through conversations with those who’ve shared experiences with me. When my recollection of events varied from theirs, I sided with my memory and used their voice, often direct quotes, to contextualize events.
Many people featured in the book gave me permission to use their names; others I changed or labeled with an initial to protect their privacy, whether they were guilty, innocent, indifferent, or somewhere in between.
As for terminology, I prefer to use trans over transgender or transsexual when identifying myself, although I don’t find either offensive.I do not use real or genetic or biological or natural to describe the sex, body, or gender of those who are not trans. Instead, I’ve used cis, aterm applied to those who are not trans and therefore less likely toexperience the misalignment of their gender identity and assigned sex at birth—a matter we do not control, yet one that continues to frame who is normalized or stigmatized.
Finally, though I highlight some of the shared experiences of trans women and women of color throughout this book, it was not written with the intent of representation. There is no universal women’s experience. We all have stories, and this is one personal narrative out of untold thousands, and I am aware of the privilege I hold in telling my story. A universal story about becoming who you were meant to be
By Mai
Janet Mock weaves her personal history and the political landscape of trans livelihood in a way that is relatable and deeply intellectual in her powerful memoir. While you read, you hear her voice, feel her vulnerability and can't help but see yourself in her struggle - the universal struggle - of becoming the person you know you are meant to be. I read her words and felt hope, disappointment, pain, elation, dread and so many other emotions because you want her to succeed in LIFE & LOVE. Her resilience makes you stronger; it made me braver and a believer in one's self determination. Read this book!

If curious about Janet or what it means to be trans, this a good book to introduce you to the people behind the label
By Amari Sali
Consider this book almost like a 100 level course on what it means to be trans in the modern age. Now, be aware Janet's story isn't one which is all tears and fears followed by an eventual triumph. For while she did grow up in Hawaii and didn't have a middle-class family, it seems she was on the brink of poverty and never in the thick of it. With that said, though, you have your expected issues with parents who just don't understand, introductions to the community, discovering who you are, and Mock switching back and forth between educating you and speaking about her personal experiences. Thus giving you a book which feels well-rounded and while it may leave those curious about the process of transitioning unfulfilled, those who actually want to know the person and how they evolved into themselves, and not just about the procedure, are in for a good read.

Masterpiece!
By Karla Redditte
"Redefining Realness" stirred up memories of my freshman year in college. During the spring semester, my English professor introduced the class to books by authors of subjects many of us had only heard of, but never even remotely experienced. Authors like E. Lynn Harris. His book "Just As I Am" sparked a fire in us that made us trample over other students hanging out in the quad, just to make it to the classroom in time to dissect the more than 380 pages of fictional sizzle. As we talked about the book and the issues it brought to the forefront, our discussions were filled with joy, anger, curiosity, and just a flat-out appreciation of Harris' writing skills.

This is how I felt while reading "Redefining Realness" - even before completing the first chapter. With my excitement level on "high", I wanted to immediately hightail it to someone's book club and talk about what I had just read!

This book is awesome. Janet Mock takes readers on the journey of her life as a trans woman of color - a journey that was as foreign to me as a map of the streets of Djibouti City. I honestly did not realize that the lives of transgender people were that intense (especially poor trans people of color). Thanks to media portrayals of trans men and women over the years, I likened them to "drag queens" and reduced their lives to simply being "people who like to play dress-up." To me, a person was either gay, lesbian, or straight. Nothing else. However, Mock's experience, passion, rawness, statistics, and transparency, taught me that the world does not fit neatly into compartments.

"Redefining Realness" evoked thought, compassion, and awareness - everything I expected based on the title of the book, as well as the publicity which has surrounded it over the last few months. I thoroughly enjoyed Mock's storytelling (story within a story), particularly the imagery she used to tell her story. Much like her "shero" Zora Neale Hurston, Mock's descriptive writing engaged all of the standard senses and more. I felt the winds and humidity of Oahu. I saw Charles, Sr.'s gold tooth with the Cowboys' shout-out. I touched Keisha's hair right along with Jamie. I heard conversations in Hawaiian pidgen on the streets as Janet and Wendi pooched. I tasted grandma's gumbo while eavesdropping on family gossip. (The pop music references sprinkled throughout the book made it even more "real" for me because I remember where I was when all of those songs debuted!)

On top of all of this, Mock made me laugh. Her quick wit provided a much-welcomed intermission from a stressful and, at times, unbelievable read. It was good to laugh to keep from crying. However, even in comedy, she managed to teach lessons. I'll never confuse a "drag queen" for a trans woman again because I now know "a drag queen is part-time for showtime. A trans woman is all the time." Love it!

"Redefining Realness" is a masterpiece, not only because of the content, but because of Mock's incredible writing skills. I appreciate her for using her unique story to inform, chastise, correct, and commend. That's what real women do.

I look forward to more work from Mock in any genre.

Dummies Has Ways of Making You Talk: Not Quite All in One German
By Brian M. Ranzoni
I read World War II history and watch some German cinema. I find that I don't really trust dubbing, and I don't want to rely on other people to interpret for me. When Aquirre: the Wrath of God or Das Boot flickers on screen at night, I want to understand the words from my speakers.

As it happens, German All-in-One for Dummies came down the Vine. Organized as into several "books", it is written by the headline authors of German For Dummies, (with CD)and the portable German Phrases For Dummies. I don't know if their newest project reprints prior information, but it appears to be the heftiest in the series, at 600 pages and a crammed appendix. Aside from tourist vocab, the later parts of the book delve into grammar, and forming original German statements from the basic parts you have learned.

True to the Dummies series, this tome mixes light humor, friendly typography, and icon-driven learning flow with serious subjects of studies. So on page 210 the book shares practical phrases for announcing flora and fauna one might see while on a trip to the German countryside, then slyly slips in:

"Ich habe eine lilafarbene Kuh gesehen! (iH hah-be ayn-e lee-la-far-ben-e kooh ge-zey-en!) (I saw a purple-colored cow!) Well, maybe not in the Alps, but you can see the purple cow on the wrapper of a well-known brand of chocolate."

Book I introduces the German language from the perspective of a visitor, whether a tourist for a week or a soldier for a year. So the language is taught in the form of conversations for everything from finding taxi stands to buying clothing. Along the way are a number of useful tid-bits: such as the difference between American and German clothing sizes. Book II continues this theme, such as teaching the reader about European currencies as well as how to ask about them in German.

Speaking as a writer, this book tips me off on how German is written, and that takes me to the advanced chapters. Books I and II cover a lot of ground for the tourist, the businessperson, and the servicemember, throughly mainly rote pronunciation of necessary terms and phrases. Book III kicks off the advanced stage of grammar so that students can learn the underlying rules necessary to form their own original conversations in German. Judging from what I read on other customer reviews, this is a major advantage over popular language series like Rosetta Stone.

All-in-One includes a CD of simulated conversations from the book. The single disc obviously doesn't repeat 600 pages of examples, but it does coordinate tactically chosen examples. For example, Pages 129 and 132 present two modest-length exchanges between a department store Verkauferun and a Frau Schulte; both are repeated verbatim in text and audio. The CD enhances the education specifically because you can see and hear the German speech, and because the audio takes the time to provide both a normal speaking cadence, and then reconstructs the same example in a slowed down, syllabically punctuated reading.

For me, the ability to read and to hear, repeating the track and flipping back to the pronunciation guide as necessary, was the most immediately useful part of this Dummies publication. So there really ought to be more than one CD of speech examples for an all-in-one book. As it stands, there is a separate German For Dummies Audio Set by a different author.

On that note though, the pronunciation guide should come first thing. Book I, Chapter 1 starts off with cognates, false cognates, lenders, borrowers, and pop expressions. All of these are a friendly way to ease the English speaker into German, except I was guessing and mangling pronunciation. The basic pronouncements should come first thing.

Also, as an all-in-one set, this book is a little unwieldy for the visitor. This is best studied vigorously in advance of a trip, then reviewing at a home base rather than trying to lug it around town. Aside from the physical bulk, it isn't necessarily organized for quick reference of important phrasings. That said, German All-in-One includes an Appendix which repeats and summarizes many of the vocabulary and tables in one place. This includes two mini-dictionaries for German to English or English to German reference.

Speaking of reference, there is little supplemental instruction at Dummies online. The product page for All-in-One includes a list of related content web articles which, as far as I can tell, repeat the book. In the spirit of Nolo books I have reviewed in the past, there really should be more Internet resources available for people who own a copy of the book, such as MP3 files with more pronouncing examples, and PDF files of German official forms, signage, and workbook practice for the student. Dummies.com has a new eLearning site, but German currently isn't in the list of available courses.

All-in-one also isn't all there is. The book teaches Standard German, which was originally a written language to bridge major verbal varieties. Standard persists today as a polycentric speech with multiple standard dialects. The book doesn't get into these linguistic gymnastics. So for instance, it doesn't distinguish between the different ways that the combined consonant "ch"--as in "ich" or "nacht"--may be pronounced.

Second, the book concentrates on grammatically correct translations instead of literal English translations in the first two books. This again appears to be for the ease of study. Book III gets into the literal translations of German, where the order of words can be noticeably different from English grammar. I feel the literal needs to be shown sooner to the reader, alongside the English-proper in order too understand the language.

Aside from some of these concerns, All-in-One is a pretty handy book with a lot to offer a patient reader. For five stars, a book that is titled "all-in-one" ought to offer more audio, either in CDs or in web files, ought to revise how some of the information is presented to the reader, and ought to expand on dialect. In this age too, there should be wider internet supplemental support for a book with the lofty aim of being comprehensive. Yet it does indeed get into many parts of German beyond regurgitating tourist book phrases, and it goes for an approach that starts with the visitor and ends with the student who wishes to get into the nuts and bolts for future mastery.

Huge Tome for German Learners
By bronx book nerd
At about 600 pages, if you don't end up learning German with this 5 books in 1 tome, you will at least be able to seriously hurt someone. Kidding aside, this is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to learn or brush up on their German. Each book addresses language learning from a different angle, from the basics that a tourist may need, including important information for eating to other tourist activities, including seeking emergency medical services. Each book is comprehensive in itself, and also stands alone, so that you can begin at the level you desire, or go back at anytime to refresh a particular area. As with most languages, the difficult part is the formal grammar. This book does not flinch from dealing with that and presents the material in categories that aid in learning. The book is also accompanied by a CD that covers some of the basics and includes some of the dialogue from the book. This is a must have resource for anyone who wants to learn German.

Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk
By scarecrow
There's been an increased interest in language learning. I don't know if Quantum thinking has anything to do with this, but how we learn and problem solve, come to express ourselves in a new tongue is an important part of acquiring a second language. This also makes your brain work in ways you should, give your brain a run!

There has been numerous theories on why we learn or don't learn language.I've come to think that any new language book takes all the theories together as ONE. Here we have that.
The older you get the process is suppose to be more difficult, I can tell you myself, past 60+ you need to work at your second language everyday, and be excited about it.Challenge your imagination. With a second language Food will taste better, you will love classical music more. Einstein and the Schrodinger cats might make more sense to you.

Get up in the morning and learn, look at words, speak, listen, read, whatever you can do, Do it Everyday."Talkin the Talk"(page 176). Carry this book around with you. There is never a shortcut for that, and you will be thrilled about the results if you apply yourself.

This is great place to start, no nonsense comprehensive approach to German, forget the "Dummies" icon, this is difficult going; and if you do nothing, you will not get too far.
The authors are well aware of this process, and the difficulties. Here they allow you to work at the book as you will, not cover to cover, but bouncing around, that's how the mind works for many, again the affinity with quantum thinking perhaps.

You don't need to learn grammar and conjugate the subjunctive or the future tense prior to even speaking one word of German. No jump in, there are pronunciation sounds for English below the German.First The book allows you to re-establish what you know already, there are countless words and concepts that overlap with English. Then you can speak as you will, or read a dialogue, and learn that Travel-German;"Shopping simplified","Describing the Weather"; Real items from the Lebenswelt you can relate to immediately. . .all that is here,"Asking small favors",Pg 241.

Then"Laying out the Basics, building sentences". You need to do both. Speak like you know it, and then get more deeply into the real language, Yes! Verbs, usually at the end of a sentence.. . pronouns.I would build a basic first, skip yes, but only within the first 200 pages or so. The nice large book comes with a DVD, so you can hear it all.

Please have Fun!, that's what it is really about. Talk German on the phone, or pretend like you are speaking to an imaginary lover, or work-person, or baseball player. . . .or Beethoven. Talk to him? He won't bite. . . .Please critique yourself, you may not do it right the the first time, but try harder. . .

Secret Pizza Party, by Adam Rubin

Shhhh! Don't tell anyone about this mouth-watering book from the New York Times bestselling creators of Dragons Love Tacos and Robo-Sauce!

How does Racoon love pizza? Oh, let him count the ways. He loves the gooey cheesy-ness, salty pepperoni-ness, sweet sweet tomato-ness, and of course the crispity crunchity crust. But someone is always chasing poor Raccoon away from his favorite food with a broom! What's a hungry raccoon to do? Plan an elaborate secret pizza party, of course!
But shhh! It’s a secret! In fact, you should probably just forget I told you. Nope, no secret pizza party happening here. You didn’t already tell all your friends, did you? Uh oh . . .

Fans of Jon Klassen and Mo Willems's humor will gobble up this quirky ode to the lengths we will go to for our heart's desire.

Praise for Dragons Love Tacos:
New York Times bestseller
A New York Times Notable Children's Book of 2012

"Rubin and Salmieri are two of the weirdest, funniest guys working in kids’ lit today. The team lets its geek flag fly in an obsessive how-to guide for would-be dragon taco party hosts. Why a taco party? As Rubin explains, 'The only things dragons love more than parties or tacos, is taco parties.' If further proof is required, Salmieri—whose poker-faced watercolor, gouache, and color pencil drawings set a benchmark for oddball observational humor—shows one odd, scaly creature with a carryout bag from 'Taco Cave' and another beaming with anticipation as it eagerly circles the date for a taco party on its taco-themed calendar. But beware: even if all the tips and rules are followed to the letter (on quantity:'The best way to judge is to get a boat and fill the boat with tacos'), all will be for naught if spicy salsa makes its way into the taco filling. In fact, the dragons will bring a whole new meaning to 'housewarming.' Off-kilter fun for those who like their picture books (and salsa) zesty and fresh."–Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Dragons Love Tacos is a heaping helping of silly.  Little kids will relate to the anti-spicy bias and chuckle over Salmieri's watercolor and gouache cartoon illustrations showing literally boatloads of tacos and all sizes of dragons enjoying their favorite food at pool parties, costume parties and, well, taco parties." –San Francisco Chronicle

"The perfect book for kids who love dragons and mild tacos." –Kirkus Reviews

"The watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil cartoon illustrations are the real stars here. Regardless of, or perhaps because of, the absurdity of the story, this tale should be a big hit with anyone with an affinity for dragons." –School Library Journal

From School Library Journal
Gr 1-4–Raccoon, paws and nose pressed plaintively to the glass, stares longingly into a pizza parlor. His nemesis, the Pizza Man, chases him off with a broom, and an unseen narrator rhapsodizes, “Ah, pizza… So beautiful, you could hang it on the wall of a museum. So convenient you could eat it in the bathtub.” Raccoon reappears looking forlorn, and the narrator suggests a pizza party at Raccoon's house–a secret pizza party because, “When you make something secret, you make it special. Regular handshake: Boring. Secret handshake: Booyah!” Wearing stilts and a trench coat, Raccoon absconds with a stolen pizza only to discover an enormous SECRET PIZZA PARTY happening nearby. Unfortunately, he is unable to play it cool and blows his disguise as he rolls around in a pizza-induced frenzy. He flees from the broom-wielding mob (led by the Pizza Man), but his armload of pizza and giant grin prove that he has no regrets. Because the narrator converses directly with Raccoon, listeners are aligned with him and identify with the roguish creature. The skillful gouache-and-ink compositions are full of sly details and visual humor. It's hard not to giggle at scenes like the lanky pizza man with angry eyebrows and a handlebar mustache rolling out dough while glaring at a “Wanted” poster featuring the raccoon. With a casually diverse cast of characters, Secret Pizza Party is a sure hit for primary-grade kids, who will appreciate the subtle humor and absurdity.–Anna Haase Krueger, Ramsey County Library, White Bear Lake, MNα(c) Copyright 2013. Raccoon, who loves pizza but finds himself bashed with brooms every time he pinches a piece, decides to throw himself a secret pizza party. He devises a clever heist and successfully navigates the chase home, only to discover his celebration is missing people to share his pizza. Luckily, he notices a crowd next door wearing masks just like Raccoon’s and eating lots of pizza! The creators of Dragons Love Tacos (2012) offer another zany salute to a popular food. Salmieri’s gouache, watercolor, and colored pencil artwork features vivid colors, often set off against dark backgrounds signaling Raccoon’s nocturnal habits. Although the plot meanders a bit, children aren’t likely to mind given all the clever gadgets and outrageous scenarios depicted (in one scene Raccoon lounges atop a serving table, devouring multiple slices of pizza while the human guests stare speechless). This will be popular with pizza aficionados; pair with William Steig’s Pete’s a Pizza (1998) or Charlotte Voake’s Pizza Kittens (2002). Preschool-Grade 1. --Kay Weisman

Secret Keeping & Stealing
By Jen Bee
I borrowed this from the library because of the cute illustrations. The book was neither fun nor cute. I just read it to my almost 4 year old and cringed as I read: "When you make something secret, you make it special." Yeah, that's not what I want to teach my child. It sounds like something a pedophile would say to their victim.

I continued on to read about the raccoon dressing up and going into the pizza store with no intention of paying: "Okay now, play it cool. You're just an honest pizza-buying citizen who left his wallet in the car. The pizza man thinks you'll be right back..." And then he steals from the store. Also not appropriate. Or funny or cute. This could have been a fun cute book, but it really missed the mark. I don't expect all books to preach moral lessons to my children, but when they specifically encourage keeping secrets and make a joke out of stealing from a store I am not impressed.

Pulled from the bookshelf after first read.
By Yelena Lungin
We love "Dragons Love Tacos" and the "Those Darn Squirrels" series at our house so we anxiously awaited the release of "Secret Pizza Party." Unfortunately, after the first read, I quietly took it off our bookshelf. The book's graphics are lively and engaging and the tone is enthusiastic and fun to read, but I didn't like that we were supposed to cheer for the raccoon to steal pizza and get away with it. Even if I overlooked the stealing element of the story, I was very unsettled by the book's characterization of secrets to young children - "When you make something secret, you make it special." I probably watched too many after school specials growing up, but it just didn't sit well with me. So, we will continue to enjoy the dragons and the squirrels, but will let the raccoon sit it out.

Hilarious!
By J.C.Phillipps
This is a seriously funny book. The author does a great job of showing us how crucial a good pizza is to the main character, a raccoon - super high stakes! Then comes the dreaded broom to swat him away. And to make matters worse, this pizza-loving raccoon lives in a town with a broom factory and a Broom Enthusiasts Club. I love the long, loopy arms and legs of the humans and the loose watercolor style of the illustrations. Great expressions and imagination throughout. This book is not only funny, but it's a great story with a hilarious outcome. Any kid who loves a good laugh will enjoy SECRET PIZZA PARTY!

Not Quite Burned Out, but Crispy Around the Edges: Inspiration, Laughter, and Encouragement for Teachers, by Sharon M. Draper

This book of inspirational stories and essays is designed for any teacher who has survived the first week of the first year of teaching. It offers memories of the joy of teaching, tells compelling tales of tragedy as well as survival, and provides opportunities for laughter, which is sometimes the only remedy for difficult situations.

Faced with low salaries, overcrowded classrooms, and dwindling public support, teachers are expected to improve student performance, answer public scrutiny, and solve society's problems - with just a stroke of chalk across a blackboard. It is easy to become discouraged, and many do. Not Quite Burned Out helps remind teachers of the reasons they entered the profession in the first place. Without disguising the heart-breaking realities, Draper nonetheless celebrates the joys and very real rewards of teaching. Her clear-eyed compassion and wry humor will offer inspiration to novice and longtime teachers alike.

Just Starting
By Craig Robinson
I left teaching for a job in Biotech a few years ago. If I had read this book first, I might not have left. I might have found the courage to finish my student teaching. Now times have changed again, I find my self in the credential program to be a guidance counselor. One of my assignments was to review a book about Philosophy of teaching, it was by chance that I came across Mrs. Draper's book. I believe that any form of art that invokes an emotional response in me to be brillant. Mrs. Draper's experiences placed in print brought me to tears, made me smile and most of all challenged me to think. I just wish I had read it sooner.

This would be great for new and uninspired teachers. More inspirational than informative. I loved the title. I was looking for

If you could have any animal's front teeth, whose would you choose?

WHAT IF YOU HAD ANIMAL TEETH? takes children on a fun, informative, and imaginative journey as they explore what it would be like if their own front teeth were replaced by those of a different animal. Featuring a dozen animals (beaver, great white shark, narwhal, elephant, rattlesnake, naked mole rat, hippopotamus, crocodile, and more), this book explores how different teeth are especially adapted for an animal's survival. At the end of the book, children will discover why their own teeth are just right for them. And they'll also get a friendly reminder to take good care of their teeth, because they're the only teeth they'll ever have. Each spread features a photograph of the animal using its specialized teeth on the left and a humorous illustrated image of a child using that animal's teeth on the right.

From Booklist
Losing a first tooth is a memorable milestone in the life of a young person. Markle uses this universal experience to pose a relevant, though slightly unsettling, scientific inquiry: “But what if an animal’s teeth grew in, instead?” In a fashion germane to her audience, she presents interesting animal trivia via examples and common happenings in their own lives—for example, if you had naked mole rat teeth, you could operate them separately like chopsticks. McWilliam’s huge-jawed illustrations, such as a young Inuit fishing with a narwhal tusk or a frustrated student mowing through his math book with a beaver’s orange-colored incisors, are somehow both hilarious and terrifying. Meanwhile, photos of open-mouthed animals accompany the text. Though perhaps not the best choice for the nightmare-prone, this will surely satisfy animal enthusiasts and trivia lovers, and dentists and parents will appreciate the mention of ways to keep human chompers healthy. Grades 1-3. --Erin Anderson

well illustrated comparative anatomy book for kids
By sweetitarian
This book is very engaging - especially relevant for kids just starting to loose their teeth. The animals include traditional selections such as an elephant and lesser known animals like a naked mole rat. The format has a good rhythm - the left page talks about the unique features of the animals' teeth, and the right page shows an illustration of what a child would look like with that animal's teeth. It's a good length; a variety of examples with colorful illustrations and a succinct amount of text on each page.
