From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up—Lola ("grandmother" in Tagalog) has just died, and Jesse is reluctant to visit her home in the Philippines. He was afraid of her because she was rumored to have magical abilities, and because he thinks she tried to drown him when he was a baby. Jesse listens to family members tell stories about her as he tries to adjust to their strange mix of superstitions and religion. Lola is one of several dead characters in this book, and they tie into another reason that the boy is worried about this trip. Jesse is an unusually nuanced character, both in relation to his family and to readers. When he sees something extraordinary, it's unclear if he is dreaming, hallucinating, or if he has inherited his grandmother's abilities. Torres's gradual revelation of details will keep readers hanging until they learn the truth. Or's artwork uses sepia tones and smooth lines, and features characters with cute button eyes. But the sweet images can quickly turn horrific when Jesse has his visions. Lola ends with a cliff-hanger that could be resolved in a sequel but that just might have to be resolved by readers' imaginations.—Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

Review
Torres and Or's tale is the sort of quiet horror story that moves along simply, lulling you into false security, before twisting quickly in another direction right at the end. The details of Jesse's powers are doled out slowly, not just thrown right at you, and so it's easy to think that his reluctance to travel is due to being uncomfortable in a different country, being annoyed by his relatives, or just being a young teen. It's not until we begin to see his visions during Lola's funeral that we realize just why Jesse is as nervous as he is. Then, as his cousin Maritess begins to try to help him deal with his powers, we think that he might just be alright. Maybe he'll learn to handle the visions, maybe his parents will be okay with his abilities as they were accepting of Lola's, maybe things will work out. It's a comforting thought that makes the final twist work even more effectively.

Or's art is as quiet as Jesse is. The characters' rounded faces seem gentle, so when Jesse's visions of death and decay begin, they are as jarring as a rotting corpse in a flower bed. But even though Or's art can be shocking, this is still horror that is appropriate for most middle school audiences. The blood and guts are kept to a minimum, used sparingly for effect, with only three pages having zombie-style (meaning: guts falling out) illustrations. The horror is built more from the looks on Jesse's face. He is tortured by what he sees, pained by the knowledge that the world isn't the safe, easy place that many people believe it to be. Maritess' respect for Jesse's abilities and her slight jealousy of his inheritance of Lola's powers is evident on her face, but that look soon begins to fade as she realizes what his visions have cost him.

Though readers are left unsure of Jesse's fate at the end of this volume--and though there is no guarantee of a second volume--that ending works perfectly for the type of horror this story is. Jesse's world is not safe, even if his story has a folkloric, almost old-fashioned quality to parts of it. The ending reminds us that he has issues beyond our ken to deal with at a very young age and we can't help but be sympathetic to them, even as we shudder at what he sees. Though the oversized format and the bright cover might not catch the eye of horror readers, with some booktalking this title is sure to find an audience. --Publishers Weekly School Library Journal

Creepy Ghost Story
By Nicola Mansfield
Reason for Reading: This was a Cybils '10 nominee and as a panelist for Graphic Novels was required reading for me. The panelists did not receive a review copy from the publisher and like most other panelists, I, unfortunately, was unable to find a copy before our nominations were due. My copy from Interlibrary Loan request had just now come in.

This is a great ghost story told in the classic tradition and very worthy to be read by all ghost story aficionados. Jesse sees dead people, goblins, demons, monsters, etc. but he's learned to stop telling anyone since his parents' and teachers' reactions have been less than accepting. Now he and his family are traveling "home" to the Philippines; Jesse's parents immigrated to Canada when he was four and this is his third visit here. He hates it here. They have come for the funeral of his grandmother, "Lola" in Filipino. The culture of his Filipino family is quite hard for Jesse to accept, they are devout Catholics, carrying Rosaries, with beautiful shrines of worship in the house and yet they are steeped in the superstitions of tradition. Lola had the "gift" and he's heard all the stories of how she's helped the community and even defeated demons. Jesse fears what it will be like here now that Lola is gone.

A fabulous story with lots of creepy moments. The tension mounts slowly through the story. Things start happening right away and the reader becomes unsettled knowing something is not quite right. Gradually we learn what is going on, and Jesse realizes the truth as well. His cousin easily figures out Jesse's gift and berates him for hiding it, telling him it is a gift from God and he must use it. He has something he must do before he leaves. Then like any really good ghost story the book ends with a really fantastic heart-pounding shocker of an ending where one can only imagine what comes next. Loved this one!

A Freewheelin' Time: A Memoir of Greenwich Village in the Sixties, by Suze Rotolo

“The girl with Bob Dylan on the cover of Freewheelin’ broke a forty-five-year silence with this affectionate and dignified recalling of a relationship doomed by Dylan’s growing fame.” –UNCUT magazine

Suze Rotolo chronicles her coming of age in Greenwich Village during the 1960s and the early days of the folk music explosion, when Bob Dylan was finding his voice and she was his muse.

A shy girl from Queens, Suze was the daughter of Italian working-class Communists, growing up at the dawn of the Cold War. It was the age of McCarthy and Suze was an outsider in her neighborhood and at school. She found solace in poetry, art, and music—and in Greenwich Village, where she encountered like-minded and politically active friends. One hot July day in 1961, Suze met Bob Dylan, then a rising musician, at a concert at Riverside Church. She was seventeen, he was twenty; they were both vibrant, curious, and inseparable. During the years they were together, Dylan transformed from an obscure folk singer into an uneasy spokesperson for a generation.

A Freewheelin’ Time is a hopeful, intimate memoir of a vital movement at its most creative. It captures the excitement of youth, the heartbreak of young love, and the struggles for a brighter future in a time when everything seemed possible.

From Publishers Weekly
In July 1961, Rotolo, a shy 17-year-old from Queens, met an up-and-coming young folk singer named Bob Dylan at an all-day folk festival at Riverside Church in Manhattan, and her life changed forever. For the next few years, Suze and Bobby lived a freewheeling life amid the bohemians in the emerging folk scene in Greenwich Village. Rotolo offers brief glimpses of the denizens populating the new music scene below 14th Street in the early '60s and recalls the excitement as writers and musicians like Dylan wandered in and out of each other's lives and apartments, trading music and lyrics to produce a new sound that would change American music. Yet as the woman who's clutching Dylan's arm on the cover of his second album Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Rotolo doesn't give us a very freewheelin' memoir. She offers shallow, almost schoolgirl-like reflections on the man she loved and lived with for three years. In a dull and plodding manner, Rotolo provides no new insights into Dylan, claiming, as have so many, that he is mysterious and enigmatic. In an excerpt from one of her journals, she writes ambivalently that she believes in his genius and that he is an extraordinary writer, but that she doesn't think he's an honorable person. (May)

From Booklist
One of the most recognizable album-cover images of the 1960s shows a young man, underdressed for the winter in a light suede jacket, leaning into a young woman. Rotolo was that young woman, and in this uneven, overlong, still fascinating memoir, she tells the story behind that photo and her love for Bob Dylan. Rotolo met Dylan in 1961; she was 17, he 20. While Dylan is the bedrock of her memoir—without him, would there be a book?—he isn’t the whole story. Rotolo discusses her own background (Italian heritage, Communist parents, inability to fit in growing up in Queens, the craziness and sexism of the era), but the dominant setting is the Greenwich Village folk scene. In informal, conversational style, Rotolo recalls those who made that scene, many of them famous but none more so than the complicated Dylan. Given his formidable presence, Rotolo’s adamant refusal to be more than “a string on his guitar” in the book is admirable. The moments when she comes most alive in its pages are the most compelling. --June Sawyers

Review
"A delightful surprise . . . [Rotolo] gracefully captures Greenwich Village as an enchanted lost world." —Entertainment Weekly

"A portrait-of-an-era . . . through [Rotolo's] eyes, we see Dylan as a unique artist on his way to greatness." —People

"Artist Suze Rotolo pays rollicking homage to a revolutionary age." —Vogue

"Exhilarating . . . a moving account." —New York Times

"A perceptive, entertaining, and often touching book about a remarkable era in recent American cultural history, about a way of living, of making art, that couldn't have happened at any other time or in any other place." —Stephanie Zacharek, Salon

"Telling her own story more than Dylan's, Rotolo writes with the lightest touch . . . She makes her own textures, so what is left out doesn't feel as if it's missing, and what is left in maps the territory she wants to bring into view." —Griel Marcus, Interview

"Poignant . . . full of quick, deft sketches of key characters." —Guardian

“What a wonderful kid [Suze Rotolo] must have been—brave, openhearted, keenly observant and preternaturally wise, able to rise to the challenge of loving a genius like Bob Dylan and knowing when to let go. I'm glad I finally got to meet her in these pages.” —Joyce Johnson, author of Minor Characters

“Suze Rotolo digs hard and deep. Then she strolls, frets, and paints a gorgeous picture of a singular place and a time that was simpler but all tangled up. Best of all, she’s a natural writer who puts the beguiling voice, skeptical brow, shining eyes, and conductor’s hands I know right before you on the printed page. What’s her secret?” —Sean Wilentz

"A welcome, page-turning perspective conspicuously absent from the plethora of books on Dylan and the folk era of the 1960s: that of a woman witnessing it all from its cultural and political epicenter." —Todd Haynes, screenwriter and director of I’m Not There

“There have been a lot of books written about Greenwich Village in the sixties, and I've probably read all of them. What makes Suze's story so special is that she grew up in this neighborhood and she still lives here. She knows these crooked streets intimately, and they know her.” —Steve Earle

i deeply connected with this story
By Jaw
i loved this book, getting to know the person in the songs and the relationship, i really liked Suze in reading this book, would've loved to know her, grateful for her sharing of her experience, she was a couple of years dead when i read it, i'm glad she wrote the story while she was still here.

Unlike some reviewers, for me, the book was a page turner and did not last long enough, even though i read it slowly and closely. The story is told with genuineness, as the person she is, not who other people want her to be. She's someone who knows how to be true to herself.

One of the most heart wrenching parts of the book for me was when she was about 14, her sister, Carla, moved out on her own, and Suze was left alone with their mother, who was an over the top alcoholic and rage-aholic. During that period, Suze endured brutal emotional abuse, the target of wild loud hate-filled rants from which she had no escape, as her tortured depressed mother blamed Suze for her unhappiness. Suze had some support from outside the home, family friends who knew what she was going through and let her come and stay with them for respite sometimes.

Like all people, her mother was a mixture and Suze took the best and tried to shut out the worst. Maybe this had something to do with her increasingly difficult reaction to the raucous and chaotic atmosphere involved in being Dylan's girl. She was his first love, and he was hers, their relationship lasted most of 4 years, which is a long time for any first relationship, much less one that had so little privacy, and so many amazing challenges to cope with.

Suze grew up lonely and often alone as a kid, she knew and adapted to solitude. She drew on her strengths to entertain and educate herself and to develop her creativity and to evolve her morals and values.

It was one of those stories where, even though i know how it's going to turn out, i couldn't help wishing for a different ending, for true first love to triumph and all romantic dreams to come true. The story gives context to Suze's rejection of the relationship with Dylan and moving on to do many other things with her life, in which she surrounded herself with a loving family of her own and continued to develop and exercise her own special talents. It's no wonder Dylan, and then her husband to be, fell in love with her. She has a simple and honest charisma.

She gives her experience of the Village at that intense exciting time in history. i had a feeling of her disconnectedness throughout, of an objective observer, keeping a self-protective distance. Clearly, she maintained a limit on the depth of feeling she shared for the most part, she shared what she was comfortable sharing, she shared the person that she shares with the world, drawing the boundaries she chooses to draw. It's a memoir, it's not an expose or tell-all kind of style.

Not just Dylan or the Village
By NYCity/Country
I learned of this memoir after Dylan received the Nobel Prize for poetry and was interested both because of him, but also because I spent a fair amount of time in the Village during the same era, being just a few years younger than Rotolo and Dylan. It wasn't what I expected (which was an opportunity to indulge in nostalgia). In many ways it is more important as it recollected the McCarthy Era, pre-feminist strictures, the evolution of folk music and the price of fame, both to the artist and those close to him/her. Rotolo, very much a deeply curious autodidact who did not do well in traditional educational settings, writes well and seemingly knowledgeably (one error I particularly noticed is that she referred to Theodore Reich as a psychologist rather than a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst). My major criticism of the book is that it didn't carry me along. My personal interest in the people and times kept me at it but there were times it felt a bit of a slog. Nonetheless, if you stick with it, I think you'll find it worthwhile if you have a general interest in Dylan, the early 60s in Greenwich Village.

A memorable memoir
By Russell J. Sanders
Of the many books about the sixties era I’ve read, Suze Rotolo’s memoir A Freewheelin’ Time is one of the best. For this is a woman who lived the spirit of the 1960s. As girlfriend to Bob Dylan, she was right in the middle of the Greenwich Village folkie movement. Her memoir is filled with stories that offer insight into how these people thought and felt while it is a wealth of modern history. Most importantly, Rotolo takes us inside a young man from Michigan who shook off his middle class beginnings to become the foremost poet of his time, perhaps the foremost poet of the twentieth century. Not only do we hear of their growing love for each other and its eventual demise, but we see the astonishment of a young woman who, by chance, became the cover of one of the most iconic record albums of all time, Dylan’s The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. At a time when album covers were skillfully and carefully designed, the photographer who did this famous shot just said, “Let’s go for a walk,” and on the walk, history was made. And Suze Rotolo is a part of that history and so much more of the history she relates in this engrossing book. She puts everything in perspective at the end: the sixties was a time when people were striving to make the world better by helping each other and sharing with each other; today, she says, people only ask, “What’s in it for me?”

Movie-goes, bloggers, and critics could not stop talking about Neill Blomkamp's first feature film, District 9, the newest alien movie that has raised the bar for science fiction thrillers in the new century.

Weta Workshop's artists created the special make-up effects, physical characteristics, alien weaponry, props, armor, custom vehicles and spaceships that were all stylized in a foreign yet familiar graphic language that defined the film's distinctive alien aesthetic. This book illuminates the creative design process, detailing two years of interaction between Weta's artists and director Neill Blomkamp in the form of hundreds of images of concept art from both the designers and director, stunning photographs of the props and sculptures, and insightful remarks from the artists themselves. Many of the images included in this book have never been seen before, including work cut or barely glimpsed in the finished film. Written by designer Daniel Falconer with a foreword by Neill Blomkamp and introduction by Richard Taylor (multi Academy Award winning special effects and make-up artist and head of Weta), The Art of District 9 offers an unrivalled, front row glimpse into the creative minds and hands that shaped this amazing film.

About the Author

Daniel Falconer has been a designer at Weta Workshop for more than a decade, producing conceptual art as part of the design team on many of the company's high profile projects, including The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and the short-lived Halo movie adaptation. Daniel wrote and collated Weta's first two books, The World of Kong (Simon & Schuster, 2005) and The Crafting of Narnia (HarperOne, 2008), art books that showcased the illustrative work of the entire design departments behind on King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia movies, and has provided descriptive copy for movie-based toys and collectibles including The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. He lives in Wellington with his wife Catherine and two daughters, reveling in his dream career of playing in imaginary worlds every day.

It has more than what you saw in the film
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo294YS8BLHEIOZ]]Weta Workshop is a brand that's synonymous with quality creative work. The Art of District 9 is another testament to the amazing work they do, on top of what they have already done - Avatar, Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Narnia.

The Art of District 9 is a 160-page hardcover. This book actually cost a few dollars less than typical art books of this size. This is a fantastic bargain.

The book is filled with concept art. Most of the things you see are in their various stages of development, from the idea to the final designs. There are lots of iterations for character designs, the aliens, props, weapons, the mothership and many other stuff. All the visuals in the book are in high resolution with great detail.

What you see in the film is actually a small part of what's presented in the book. You can see a discarded concepts like crazy Organ Retriever which can harvest organs at the press of a button (I suppose), and then there's the variation of the exo suit which was designed to the stage where a life-size model was created and then dropped - I can't even begin to imagine how it feels like to have work at that stage of completion thrown out. And there are a few impressive mothership designs which weren't used as well.

Other than the illustrated art, there are also lots of pictures on the sculpts created. What impresses me are the weapon designs. They look really good, and they are printed really big, and there are lots of them.

Lead conceptual designer Greg Broadmore, creature designer David Meng, Neill Blomkamp and other artists provide good insight into the conceptualization process with their commentary.

This is one of the better art books for 2010.

Highly recommended.

I'll keep this short since there are 15 other 5 star reviews, but this is a model for what all other "art of" books should be. Complete design evolution of characters and weapons, along with photos of final Weta props. The book even shows a lot of the graphic design: everything from the alien language to the human corporations. So many awesome. Buy! Buy buy buy!

A must have if you loved the production design of the film or if you are a sci-fi/fantasy artist looking for inspiration.
Unbelievable photos and reproductions of District 9's concept art.
Destined to be a highly sought-after collectible book.
Get it while you can!
Glad I ordered two copies.

Aircraft carrier Hiryū
As mentioned in the previous chapter, Hiryū was the second aircraft carrier included in “The Second Naval Armaments Supplement Program” of 1934. Originally both carriers were supposed to be sister vessels, but the number of design modifications introduced during the construction of Sōryū resulted in many differences between the two. According to the original plans Hiryū was to be completed a year after Sōryū, but her construction (similarly to her predecessor) suffered delays caused by two key factors. The first one was the implementation of the lessons learned during the reconstruction of Kaga, which was going on simultaneously with Hiryū’s construction. Then there was new data available from the early service days of Sōryū, which exposed some of the design’s drawbacks and weaknesses. The number of issues popping up “along the way” was further increased by the Fourth Fleet Incident and by Japan’s withdrawal from the previously signed naval treaties. Considering all those issues, it is not hard to imagine the inevitable impact they had on Hiryū’s original design and construction schedule. The greatest source of delays was undoubtedly the aftermath of the Fourth Fleet Incident, which forced the Navy Aviation Bureau to introduce changes in the design of the second carrier. After the new requirements had been implemented, Hiryū’s final design (known as the “Basic Project G-10”) finally emerged.

4 stars for the information and the photos, but there are some annoyances and irritations.
By Bayard B.
A very good book on these two ships. Chapter I on Initial Concept and Design Changes contains information I had never read before. There is a separate chapter on the design of the Hiryu describing the changes to the design and construction as a result of the Fourth Fleet Incident of July 1935. The book is a translation from the original Polish and there are several annoyances. There are quite a few English misspellings and grammatical oddities. For example, Rangun is the capital of Birma. In a couple of sentences it appears that the Polish word for "hull" got translated as "fuselage." Another annoyance is that a couple of photo or drawing captions don't really match the photos. For example, on page 17, the label for the drawing reads "Cross section ... showing the thickness of armor plating." There is no text in the drawing -- the deck levels are not called out and no armor thicknesses are indicated. These things are a bit irritating but the information in the book is still excellent.

Highly Recommended.

Excellent book about this pair of IJN aircraft carriers. Well written, good selection of photos. Development and operational histories are covered. It includes color depictions of Japanese aircraft and their USN opponents that are very well done. Would have liked to see Hiryu and Soryu depicted in color as well, particularly some of the flight deck schemes, but that's a minor quibble. Would recommend, my purchase of this volume led to my buying another of his books on the IJN carrier KAGA.

Not as good as his book on the Kaga but well written from there nicely translated with some goofs. Well researched and extremely informative. Would be nice to see more books of this kind on the other ships of Pearl Harbor such as Akagi, Shokaku and Zuikaku as well as the Mogami heavy cruisers.

Treason: A Novel, by Newt Gingrich

Leading politician and bestselling author Newt Gingrich and novelist Pete Earley are back with another gripping international thriller.
THE WORLD'S MASTER TERRORIST, known only as the Falcon, has infiltrated Washington's highest corridors of power, threatening the very existence of our democracy in this realistic tale of modern day TREASON. Major Brooke Grant has been waging war against terrorism since her parents were murdered during 9/11, keenly aware that her enemy transcends borders. But a coordinated attack on the president at the funeral of a Washington power broker leads her to a terrifying revelation: the enemy is closer than she'd ever imagined and is hiding in plain sight. The Falcon has gained a weapon no terrorist has ever wielded before: an American-born traitor burrowed inside the U.S. government itself.

TREASON is a story of a nation fighting for its life not only against outside threats but also against an internal threat-a fanatical jihadist who uses liberty as a shield while trying to destroy the civilization created in its image. Major Grant's deadly chess match with the Falcon turns personal when he issues a fatwa against her and those she loves. Can she unmask the traitor and stop the Falcon's most skilled assassin sent to kill her before he strikes? Or will she fall victim to betrayal by a false friend in this gripping tale of treachery, courage, and ultimately patriotism where good battles evil? Only Newt Gingrich, who brings decades of experience in national security and politics to bear in his collaboration with journalist Pete Earley, can spin such a vivid mix of reality and fiction, daring readers to guess where the line between the two is crossed.

Newt Hits A Home Run
By Celtpip
This is one of the best reads I have had this year. The book combines terrific characters with an actual scenario that could be happening in the world today. The idea that there are jihadist sleepers in all levels of Government isn't so far fetched. Our current President has allowed members of the Muslim Brotherhood into Government security organizations and the influx of Muslim immigrants and refugees make it easy for the new brAnd of terrorists to emerge.
Better yet Newt portrayal of the traitorous "insider threat" is a reAl American problem being addressed ebay all levels of GOvernment and industry who have access to America's secrets. News made this threat compuLsive so even the most skeptical person who doesn't think America is under a reAl jihadist threat now...Will after they read this book.
News has been in our Governments service for along time and has seen these threats arise from the 3rd world countries who believe America is the big Satan of the world. This book and hopefully the next book will move the readers to believe that we are being set up for another 9/11 of potentially greater proportions.
He has some great characters and an actual female as the kick butt heroine. She is smart and resourceful with bit of the Marine superwoman ready to roll out and save her country.
The only aspect of the book at least for me was that I picked out the American jihadist eArly in the book but I couldn't prove it. But the proof was provided at the end of the book
Great read and well worth the 5 stars I gIve it.

A Real Page Turner!
By Sandra Winegar
I am a fan of Newt as a politician. He is articulate and intelligent. Anxious to try a new read from him, I ordered this book and have not been able to put it down. The book is not as "heavy" (figuratively, not in weight), like a Ludlum or a Clancy, but has an excellent story line. The book has lived up to my hopes and expectations. The only downside is that it is not available on my iPad. I am anxious to finish this book so I can go back and order earlier volumes!

Loved!
By lq
Loved it! This is a fast paced political/espionage thriller that had me flipping pages just as quickly as possible. I read this book the week of the Orlando massacre and it was chilling reading about jihad while also watching it play out on the news. This is a sobering topic and the author has used his considerable political experience to weave a chilling tale while also making it easy to understand. While a difficult subject, this is a compelling novel that fans of the genre will love.

This is book two in the Duplicity series and picks up where book one ended, however it is a stand alone novel. It's so good, though, that you really owe to yourself to read them both. The author is on my must read authors' list.

Nothing else like it
By Toutenhaut
Only a single printing of this book was published in 1973, at $35 per copy ($170 in today's dollars). Those who missed the boat have had to content with finding a local library that carried the title, or buying a deaccessioned volume from used book dealers at 10-20x the original retail (2-4x adjusted for inflation).

As the other reviewer noted, this is a comprehensive reference manual, a chronological survey of male fashion trends in the mostly Anglo-American cultural sphere through 3/4 of the 20th Century, from underwear to formal wear, from spats to cravats, from full body bathing suits to polyester leisure suits. The authors did not pretend to teach good taste (though they were clearly affected by the contemporary "Peacock Revolution"), as Flusser and Roetzel (and Andy Gilchrist) aimed to do through their popular guides; what they did offer in abundance was a historical perspective on the evolution of sartorial design. By gaining this perspective, the reader would have a more confident grasp on what 'good' taste was, is, and will likely be (given the cyclic nature of fashion).

Is this confidence worth $300 - $500? If one is a working member of the fashion or entertainment industry, almost certainly. A history buff? Quite possibly. Someone looking for guidance on what to wear to work or a wedding reception? Look online (several informative websites and Wikipedia articles appear to draw heavily from this book in their background sections), or buy something authored by Flusser, Roetzel, or Gilchrist.

After waiting patiently for years, I finally came across a copy offered at roughly 1x inflation-adjusted original retail; unless and until McGraw Hill decides to reissue this title in e-book format for a pittance, it will remain one of my all time best finds.

The Grimoire of men's classic fashion culture
By Peter Padro
This tome is the gold standard of resources for learning most everything there is to know about classic men's dress and fashion. More of a reference work than a cover to cover read, this resource answers most of those questions that would leave most classic men's dress mentors scratching their heads. Wonderful illustrations, sketches, glossary of terms, and evolutionary commentary of most every item that can be named in the male wardrobe.

A rarity to find in any condition, but be prepared to pay handsomely for the information contained herein. This book is a much valued and used trophy in my collection of lore in the art of classic men's dress. Couldn't recommend it with higher marks.

Out of print, so it's hard to find at an affordable price. But if you are a costume or fashion designer, this remains one of the best compilation-type references around for 20th Century men's wear.

The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success, by Kevin Dutton

In this engrossing journey into the lives of psychopaths and their infamously crafty behaviors, the renowned psychologist Kevin Dutton reveals that there is a scale of "madness" along which we all sit. Incorporating the latest advances in brain scanning and neuroscience, Dutton demonstrates that the brilliant neurosurgeon who lacks empathy has more in common with a Ted Bundy who kills for pleasure than we may wish to admit, and that a mugger in a dimly lit parking lot may well, in fact, have the same nerveless poise as a titan of industry.

Dutton argues that there are indeed "functional psychopaths" among us―different from their murderous counterparts―who use their detached, unflinching, and charismatic personalities to succeed in mainstream society, and that shockingly, in some fields, the more "psychopathic" people are, the more likely they are to succeed. Dutton deconstructs this often misunderstood diagnosis through bold on-the-ground reporting and original scientific research as he mingles with the criminally insane in a high-security ward, shares a drink with one of the world's most successful con artists, and undergoes transcranial magnetic stimulation to discover firsthand exactly how it feels to see through the eyes of a psychopath.

As Dutton develops his theory that we all possess psychopathic tendencies, he puts forward the argument that society as a whole is more psychopathic than ever: after all, psychopaths tend to be fearless, confident, charming, ruthless, and focused―qualities that are tailor-made for success in the twenty-first century. Provocative at every turn, The Wisdom of Psychopaths is a riveting adventure that reveals that it's our much-maligned dark side that often conceals the trump cards of success.

“Dutton deftly navigates through some disturbing subject matter, but his message is ultimately upbeat: Scientists may be able to learn a lot from the darker side of human nature.” ―Allison Bohac, Science News

“A convincing study . . . The admirable quality of this book is Dutton's refusal to accept easy answers in one of the more sensational fields of popular psychology.” ―Tim Adams, The Observer (UK)

“The Wisdom of Psychopaths is a surprising, absorbing, and perceptive book. I found it altogether fascinating.” ―Philip Pullman, author of the bestselling His Dark Materials trilogy

“Dutton tackles an elusive, important, and much neglected aspect of the mind: our personality. He presents some highly original insights and does so in a provocative and humorous style―offering practical tips along the way for both ‘normals’ and ‘sociopaths'” ―V. S. Ramachandran, Ph.D., author of the bestselling The Tell-Tale Brain

Hare, Ph.D., author of Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us and developer of the Hare Psychopathy Checklist

“The irrepressible Kevin Dutton has done it again! This time he has produced an irreverent romp through the bright side and dark side of the mysterious psychopath, and does a great job of mixing the scientific with the personal, offering readers an insider’s glimpse into the workings of fascinating persons―and fascinating personalities. Readers will come away both enlightened and entertained.” ―Scott O. Lilienfeld, Professor of Psychology at Emory University, President of the Society for the Scientific Study of Psychopathy, and coauthor of 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology

“If you’ve been keeping your inner psychopath locked up in the maximum-security unit of your mind, Kevin Dutton explains why giving him some fresh air from time to time may actually do you―and, more important, the rest of us―a world of good. Superficially persuasive
By G. P. Thomas
This is a clearly well researched and often fascinating book, but one which nevertheless rests on a whole bunch of assumptions and long bows.

Dutton takes the term psychopath and completely undermines any point to it as a diagnostic term. Once he's placed it on a 'spectrum' it enables him to talk about 'turning up and down' the dials, even turning them up on some traits associated with the psychopath (fearlessness, ruthlessness) while not on others. What if, says Dutton, we could take those traits and apply them to particular situations, like defusing a bomb, or performing difficult surgery? But this isn't the issue of psychopathy. The problem with psychopathy is precisely that it is a general callous disregard for other individuals as worthy of any consideration other than that which will serve their self interested needs. It's not something they 'turn on and turn off' as situations require. And he never makes the case that it is.

Dutton focuses on the functional psychopath to make his argument that they're not all damaging to society, but that they often perform much needed tasks. What he doesn't do is talk to the families of these so called 'functional' psychopaths. He doesn't look at the psychological havoc often spread, which while not illegal, and not landing them in jail, often has enormous ramifications for those individuals that are forced to deal with them on a day to day basis.

His treatment of the term empathy is curious to say the least, and again he stretches it to a point where it largely becomes meaningless. Far from lacking empathy, says Dutton, psychopaths have too MUCH empathy. His proof? Well look at the obvious pleasure a serial killer psychopath takes in the distress of his victim. It's also shown they're able to identify emotions in others more accurately. Interestingly enough this is exactly the same argument used by Australian serial killer Peter Haigh to explain to the court why he cannot possibly be a psychopath. Glib and superficial? You betcha. But it also misses the whole point of empathy, which isn't just to IDENTIFY another's emotional state or situation, but to IDENTIFY WITH it. In other words it's not empathy to look at someone crying and laugh because you find the distress of others amusing, it's empathy to look at someone crying and feel a similar distress.

The book is riddled with these poor attempts to stretch the meanings of terms to fit a controversial argument. And the question throughout constantly remains, why bring psychopaths into this? There's no doubt that there are times in our lives when adopting a 'care free' attitude or achieving a state of calm under pressure are useful and can greatly increase our quality of life - but then why not write a book about adopting these particular traits in particular circumstances?

The answer of course, is because plenty of those books have already been written. And they're not controversial. Dutton wants to sell books and make a name for himself and he's willing to go to the most spurious of lengths in his argument to do it.

So I await patiently Dutton's follow up book, where I presume he will show the benefits to us all of adopting some of the personality traits of the Paedophile, which will lead us all to a greater warmth and affection for children. Oh, not turning the dials all the way up of course, and not on all of their traits or in every situation, but just a little at the right time.

The biggest problem I have with this book is that it IS superficially persuasive, until you look at his arguments critically. Many people will read this book and find justification for their particular antisocial views, others may be inspired to 'try them out.' All in all the problem lies in the game theory study Dutton references, where the program TITFORTAT dominated by reflecting the behaviour of other programs. Nice when they were nice, brutal and unforgiven when they were not. Do we really want a society where the cultural norm is the attitude of the psychopath, where everyone is forced to 'get in first' because the other guy will if you don't?

I gave this two stars because the studies he referenced are really quite fascinating, but Dutton's interpretation of them is loose and his overall argument rests on shaky foundations to say the least.

Embracing the psychopath within
By Reuters Breakingviews
If you've ever thought your boss is a psychopath, you may be right, according to psychologist Kevin Dutton. And if you're a top-flight markets trader, captain of industry, surgeon or soldier, you may well be one yourself. But that's OK, says Dutton. It may even be optimal.

"The Wisdom of Psychopaths," an exploration of serial killers, monks, spies and CEOs through the prism of personality tests and neuroscience, is a good book lurking within a bad one. In this regard it perfectly reflects its theme, which is that among the dark traits which make a person psychopathic nestle behaviors and abilities that are not only necessary, but good, for individuals and society. In the seeds of evil, he proposes, wisdom may be found.

An Oxford University research psychologist, Dutton may discomfit many readers with an almost adolescent joy in mixed metaphors and grating puns, relishing the shock value of his premise as he liberally applies the term "psychopath" to all kinds of people. It may sound like he is suggesting sadistic ax-murderers or serial rapists lurk within all men, but his point is rather more subtle. Perhaps this approach is a deliberate attempt to open the reader's mind to new ideas. Or perhaps he needs a more restrained editor.

Still, a razor-sharp intellect with a serious academic purpose lurks behind the loose phrasing and wordiness. Dutton stacks up references to interlocking personality studies, brain scans and physiological examinations, comparing members of the general population with those behind bars and those who excel at certain sharp-end professions. His argument is that most "psychopaths" aren't violent, and indeed most aren't locked away. Many excel in society precisely because they possess, in a more moderate or controlled way, the same traits that land their more antisocial brethren in a world of hurt.

The key traits include: ruthlessness; intense capacity to focus, excluding all distractions such as fear; powerful reward motivation; a disposition to action; acute ability to read emotions in other people, without being moved by them; charisma; mental resilience; and mindfulness, the ability to live in the present moment.

Many people have some of these traits, he says. Those who can manage to flick them on and off according to circumstance have a powerful toolkit for doing well in life, particularly in high-risk, high-reward professions. Those with only partial control of such traits, or who have them jammed full-on all the time, may severely hurt others, ruin their own business or even damage the world economy. Those who lack any such traits should try to embrace a few, Dutton suggests.

In examining CEOs, Dutton also cites a 2005 academic study that compared business managers, psychiatric patients and hospitalized criminals in a psychological profiling test. "A number of psychopathic attributes were actually more common in business leaders than in so-called disturbed criminals," Dutton writes, listing attributes such as superficial charm, egocentricity, persuasiveness, lack of empathy, independence, and focus. The main difference lay in the "antisocial" traits, with the criminals' physical aggression, impulsivity and lawbreaking dials cranked up higher.

One of Dutton's own surveys, in which visitors to his website take a personality test called the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale and give details of their professions, found that CEOs ranked highest on the scale, followed by lawyers, TV and radio workers, salespeople, surgeons and journalists.

Dutton interviews "functional psychopath" special-forces soldiers, financial traders, lawyers and doctors, often in exotic locales, who speak of experiencing altered states of consciousness when entirely focused on their work, akin to the concept of "flow" or "optimal experience" of Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. One of the most intriguing of Dutton's insights is the similarity he relates between certain psychopathic traits and those exhibited by experts in Buddhist meditation. Both are very good, for example, at reading emotions in people's faces, embracing new experiences, remaining in the moment and practicing detachment.

To say psychological traits required in killing and in making a killing in the markets are not dissimilar may seem trite. Yet Dutton, despite his tendency to showboat, uses that observation as a starting point for a disconcerting and intelligent exploration of the outer reaches and useful inner depths of at least some human minds.

Interesting but rambling and unconvincing
By Yours truly,
The point the author seems to be making is that a little psychopathy can be a good thing. He mentions quite a few successful businessmen and politicians who score high on psychopath tests. He claims his father is a psychopath. The part I found most interesting was a list of professions and how people in those professions score for psychopathy. Policemen, for instance, score high for psychopathy. But the premise is, in the end, trivial. Surgeons are trained to see their patients as a piece of meat. Policemen and the military are trained to function normally in horrifying conditions and to kill without hesitation. They couldn't do their jobs otherwise. A little of anything is valuable in certain circumstances; cold-bloodiness, contempt, skepticism, you name it. I defy anyone to mention any quality that isn't useful in certain circumstances. It's the degree and circumstances that define whether a trait is valuable or not.

I was left with as many questions as answers. While Mr. Dutton addressed professions, he didn't touch age. I'd be willing to bet that children score high on psychopath tests, because children aren't born with empathy but learn it. So while Dutton is asking questions, he's cherry-picking his questions and demographics. He's addressing certain demographics that he wants us to pay attention to in order to make his point.

Another question I had concerned intelligence - do psychopaths test high, low or conform to the same kind of bell curve non-psychopaths do? And, on the subject of intelligence: He mentions a number of self-confessed psychopaths, so apparently psychopaths do know they're psychopaths. Then he mentions psychopath tests that seem to me to be idiotically simple to see through. For instance, is it okay to put a bunch of pills in your grandmother's teapot to play a joke on her? Most six year old children would know better than to answer yes to that question. So if questions like those are used to determine adult psychopathy and psychopaths know that they are psychopaths, it comes down to whether or not a psychopath wants to let everyone know he's a psychopath - and is therefore not a valid test of psychopathy. We know from countless historical examples that most psychopaths hide their psychopathy behind a veneer of friendly, sociable, non-threatening behavior. Neighbors tell us how kind a psychopath was. Mothers tell us that a psychopath was a sweet child and nice to everyone. I'd be tempted to simply give psychological tests the benefit of the doubt, but previous experience has taught me to never underestimate the intelligence of psychologists. There are some slightly less transparent questions, but every single one mentioned seemed ridiculously transparent to me, leaving me with some big doubts about how effective they were as a test.

I purchased the audiobook version, so I couldn't check footnotes or references, which was a serious problem for me. He mentions "flow" in the context of athletes and states that psychopaths display an ability to reach this mental state. Flow was coined by Csikszentmihalyi in his book of the same title to label a mental state of complete absorption in what one is doing. It's a kind of heightened attention to a task that allows one to tune out everything except what one is doing and it's a creative characteristic displayed by musicians, artists and people on computers, among others. Most people who have been absorbed in a task, then looked up and realized that six hours have gone by in what seems like a half hour, have been in this state. But Dutton doesn't give numbers. How do psychopaths compare to the rest of the population? He mentions simply that psychopaths display the ability to achieve the flow state, without mentioning numbers or whether the statistical sample was valid.

The issues go on and on. Dutton mentions that psychopaths can identify a victim by body language, the way they walk. So can non-psychopath criminals and women. It's been well established that women are better at reading facial expressions and body language than men are. But, Dutton doesn't tell us how psychopaths measure up to other groups that can identify "good" victims. On recognizing a potential victim, it boils down to anyone who has a vested interest in identifying them can do so better than the population as a whole can. Women because they're nurturers and also at risk. Non-psychopath criminals because it part of their skill set for success.

On a personal level, I've known more than one psychopath in my childhood. So, I'm always trying to learn enough to identify them far in advance, so that I can get the heck out of Dodge if one is in the vicinity. I found Dutton's book to be interesting but somewhat unconvincing.
